ok these are really barebones but I am being normal about Clumby again this evening. Do expect it to happen again.
I think in the backstory of Bugsnax, Clumby wasn't actually invited on Bronica's expedition to Snaktooth Island. I think she was dissatisfied with the stories she was being assigned, and snuck onto to the boat in order to really investigative some journalism.
The Octodad music in her office at the start of the game was a clue!!!!!!!!

I think it'd be funny that if during Bronicas expedition Clumby would have been like the Journalist regarding the absolute recklessness they have when it comes to catching bugsnax/doing literally anything on the island.
