Not caring about the state of your language is like cutting out your grandmother's tongue, 2024
Keli Gonzales, Cherokee Nation | Courtesy of the Keli Gonzales Private Collection
The Cherokee language inspires much of Keli's work. Her grandparents, who are both first-language Cherokee speakers, encourage Keli and her family members to learn the language.
"Language learning is a noble task, and it shouldn't be taken lightly," Keli said. "Sometimes we need a good wake up call to be reminded of this."

Sequoyah Indian Weavers' Association memorabilia, date unknown, creator unknown
Cherokee National Collection, Tahlequah, Oklahoma
Framed here are samples created by Sequoyah weavers. These samples reflect some of the colors and patterns that weavers could create through loom weaving. Some of the looms used in the past continue to be used by weavers and their descendants today.

a blanket of snow on fairy lights
I've seen people ask about it over the years and other people have tried to make a point to talk about it - how Cherokee art is different than other tribal nations' art. I will usually see it talked about how we do not have as many straight lines like those seen in many others, and that many nations inspiration comes from the world around them - for us mostly woodlands. It's also said lot of our decorations and motifs will have more of a flow to them and curved lines such as those you will see in vines or water - water being a very large part of our spirituality. I enjoy seeing it on pottery but I also love seeing it on basketry because it's a good display of how the environmental resources we have had may have shaped our culture.
Also the way these baskets are started is with a spiral, the way we start one of our most important ceremonial dances is with a spiral as well ☺️
I finished watching Crá yesterday and now I need to try to persuade as much of tumblr as possible to watch it too.
It's an Irish-language murder mystery TV series set in Donegal, though it's subtitled in English, so you don't need Irish to follow it. It's not a cheerful series - Crá translates to torment - and nearly every single character is in some way corrupt, compromised or morally grey. But it's extremely well-produced, it's gripping, it has an utterly stunning soundtrack (by a Breton composer!) and it's visually gorgeous:
This is the first ever Irish-language TV show to get a primetime slot in Northern Ireland. And I would utterly love for the BBC to invest in more of this kind of thing (it's a BBC/TG4 coproduction). So if this sounds like something you'd be interested in, please help make it a success!
