Medieval bats! I love these guys. They're in the bird section, but clearly even the medieval monks are a little confused about this, writing the bat "uses its teeth, which you may not be accustomed to finding in other birds." Cuckoo wasps are truly a paradox; their entire life plan revolves around sneaking into the nests of other bees or wasps unnoticed and yet they are basically living disco balls. In fact, researchers are still not sure why cuckoo wasps are so colorful— is it a classic wasp case of warning colors? A bluff? Or is it simply a funky side-effect of how their extra tough exoskeletons are formed?
