toy story 4 was unnecessary and i have an extreme dislike for it. could it have worked with the original plot of woody having to let bo peep go? yes, absolutely. does it work currently? no.
this movie has been my special interest for 15 years, and i think its a major betrayal of all the characters.
1. one of woody’s biggest priorities has always been loyalty to his friends and his kid. i mean in the 3rd movie he was trying to convince the other toys to leave sunnyside so they could be there for andy even though they weren’t being played with anymore, and even left on his own so he could be there for him when he goes to college. and when he realizes his purpose is done he puts himself in the box so he could have the chance to be given up to bonnie and be with his friends. he isn’t abandoning andy, he’s letting andy choose whether he wants to take woody to college.
2. buzz is turned into a complete idiot who lives on the whim of his voicebox and somehow doesn’t know what an inner voice is. yes, he still has traits of being a space ranger, but he’s also extremely intelligent? in both the second and third movie, as well as the short films, buzz has demonstrated immense intelligence
3. bo peep wasn’t always the super outspoken character she was in the 4th movie. this is a minor gripe but they should’ve had bo act like how she was in the first movie and THEN have her change. or don’t change her personality as much? you can be like bo peep in the first two movies and still be an action character? also she’s such a dick to woody, it makes no sense why he’d wanna go with her at the end.
forky is annoying, yes. but he had potential and could’ve been an amazing addition to the cast. speaking of the cast, they should’ve been included more (with the exception of characters whose actors have unfortunately passed away) they were advertised as such in the trailers and then only had like 10 minutes of screen time total.
now keep in mind, i am not a child. i was 12 when this movie came out, so i have never been able to see this movie through the eyes of a younger child; so maybe some of my critical thoughts are nitpicking or meager. but as someone who grew up with these movies throughout the late 2000’s-early 2010s, i think toy story 4 is an unnecessary disappointment, and i have doubts that toy story 5 will be any better
