-Ask Dahlia to describe her life in a few words and sheâd probably say constant traveling, for she and her family were always moving around for her fatherâs job
-The first ten years or so were spent in South Korea, and then there was a domino effect of them residing in one country or another, living comfortably in nice areas
-Dahlia would be dragged to parties as she grew up, whether they were with her fatherâs co-workers or even just gatherings with more family or family friends
-And she always seemed to reflect a recluse, sipping champagne quietly in a corner and hoping a stranger didnât strike up a conversation
-Once the conversation about university came up, Dahlia remembered feeling shy and lacking confidence to really speak her thoughts on the matter
-Her father had various prestigious schools lined up, and Dahlia didnât protest back then, enrolling in an ivy league school in New York since that was where they were currently living
-But after a year of being stuck in a major she truly didnât have a passion for, she enrolled in a marine science course for the purpose of knocking out a science requirement
-And Dahliaâs eyes lit up during the first lecture, and weeks after, she changed her major to oceanography & marine biology
-The oceans and their sea life were always fascinating to her, especially with her family having previously lived near the coast back in South Korea, so it was like things came full circle
-Naturally, her father wasnât happy and Dahlia remembered her voice having wavered as she told him, but this was her passion and what she wanted to do
-Things were a little strained after that, but she continued on and got a bachelorâs in the major, but realized she craved more
-Dahlia also longed to experience what it was like to live in a small town since she was always residing in big and loud cities, and she found Rocky View, Rhode Island
-Sheâs now pursuing a Masterâs at the townâs university, and even got a part time internship at the marina and aquarium

most  days  thomas  loved  that  they  knew  almost  everyone  in  town  but  now  ,  he  was  cursing  himself  for  being  such  an  open  book  .  many  years  ago  he  might  not  have  been  so  easy  to  read  but  now  their  once  high  walls  were  broken  ,  all  thanks  to  his  husband  (  the  love  of  their  life  )  .  thomas  looked  up  to  audrey  ,  trying  to  give  her  a  soft  smile  .  he  sighed  and  nodded  .   â  they  want  me  to  me  the  dean  of  the  history  department  ,  â  they  whispered  ,  their  heart  beating  loudly  in  their  ears  .  it  hadnât  felt  real  but  saying  it  now  out  loud   ?   it  was  all  too  real  .  Â
Audrey wasnât exactly an open book like the professor was. She wasnât one to be sentimental or vulnerable within the snap of a finger. Only a few people had gotten close enough to see that. Maybe the difference was what worked for their friendship too, though. The balance. Dean of the history department. âOkay...â Audrey murmured after contemplation, cleaning up a few things around her. âWhatâs the reason for the pale look, then? If I didnât know better, Iâd say that offer sounds like a good thing.â Maybe she didnât know better, though; maybe she was missing something. Probably, by that look in Thomasâs eyes.
âlook, when I invite you to dinner to try my really outstanding chicken soup, most people would RAVE at how fantastic it isâŚâ orla then leant forward and knocked the person sitting opposite her lightly. âor at least LIE. LIE cause I am extremely fragile-â she said sarcastically, leaning back in her chair smirking. she wasnât fragile-not from first instance. âso can you please lie, for me? so I can enjoy my wonderful soup in peace, away from haters.â
It was a little comical, Orla trying to plead her case for validation over a bowl of soup, even if Audrey needed to lie for it. âUh huh,â Audrey murmured in return, raising an eyebrow at her. âAnd Iâm an extremely honest person,â the bartender quipped back but it was in a purposefully blunt tone like the begging wasnât affecting her, even if the conversation was slated as more of a joke. âSo I suppose if Iâll have to be an actress for the evening, I just hope you have some drinks for us too.â She cracked an amused smile. Sounded like a fair deal to her.

It wasnât something Dahlia could ever do, just show up at someoneâs door and knock without notice. Not that she was finding it rude that Maya did that, sheâd never think that, but Dahlia was just noting the fact that her friend was much bolder than she was. Or could ever be, she believed. Opening the door, Dahlia blinked. âMaya, good morning,â she greeted slowly in surprise. âItâs alright, I was already awake.â Which was the truth; Dahlia was an early bird. âOh?â She looked curious, hesitating before stepping to the side and gesturing for Maya to come in. âI-- what is it?â
ally  hadnât  had  real  friendship  in  over  .  .  .    half  a  decade  (  or  so  ,  her  memory  was  not  always  the  best  )  .  she  remembered  the  foster  brothers  and  sisters  she  had  made  along  the  way  but  as  soon  as  they  had  those  three  am  talks  it  seemed  as  though  one  of  them  was  off  .  ally  had  tried  to  build  walls  but  her  giving  and  loving  nature  always  came  through  .  and  when  she  met  dahlia  it  was  as  though  meeting  up  with  an  old  friend  once  more  .  ally  took  the  phone  back  ,  nodding  .   â  pictures  seem  so  much  more  vibrant  on  this  phone  than  my  other  ,  but  .  that  was  also  a  flip  phone  .  â
It was no secret that Dahlia was more on the shy side, but she was also a naturally friendly person as well. But it was still a little nerve-wracking, having moved to a new place. But she liked Rocky View and liked the people there, and was lucky enough to meet new friends, Ally included. Her smile widened at the comment and she nodded. âTechnology has come far,â she said. âSometimes I wonder if the world will one day be like those movies.â Dahlia paused to think. âThe sci-fi ones.â Those specific, futuristic ones that made Earth seem so far in the past compared to them.
the bad part about it was rai was lost in her own world, stuck on autopilot so she hadnât realized someone else was in the aisle. she saw what she needed and reached for it without a second thought. sighing more so at herself than the other person she took a small step back herself. âoh, no i apologize. i wasnât paying attention and didnât notice you,â she smiled softly. it was times like these she felt like just walking away instead of engaging. âi do my weekly shopping here, on the same day if my schedule allows and i kind of go on autopilot.â
Dahlia held her list in both hands now, glancing briefly back at the words on the note before nodding several times as if she related to what the other was saying. âI do too,â she admitted, but then realized she needed to specify which part of Raiâs statement she meant. âOh, with both, I mean. I like sticking to a schedule, and...â Her voice drifted off for a moment as she contemplated. âI think going on autopilot has become almost default.â A small laugh came as she smiled.

thomas + audrey !
they  sat  on  a  barstool  moving  their  whiskey  back  and  forth  .  they  had  just  left  a  meeting  for  the  department  and  thomas  was  at  a  closed  roads  .  did  they  take  the  position  as  dean  of  the  history  department   ?   or  stay  as  just  a  professor   ?   they  had  to  decide  if  they  liked  teaching  more  than  .  .  .  whatever  a  dean  did  .  they  sighed  and  looked  up  .   â  could  i  have  another  ,  please   ?   â
x
Something was off with Thomas, it was clear to see. Audrey seemed to have noticed the moment they sat down earlier. The ask for another round made her nod, and she went through the motions of getting them another drink. Setting it down in front of them, Audrey finally spoke. âYou seem more distracted than usual,â she pointed out, a casual tease though she did seem to be observing him. âYou know the confidant role works both ways, right?â If Thomas wanted to talk about it, sheâd listen. If not, that was fine too.
melina promised herself that she would tell her family everything at some point. however, as the day progressed, it was made abundantly clear that today was not that day. instead, today was the day for drinking and forgetting. instead of words, all she had to do was nod in response to audreyâs question to receive her drink of choice. sitting down on one of the stools, she took a deep breath and sighed. â one of those days, indeed. â
Audrey was quiet for a few more moments as she studied the woman on the other side of the counter, as if trying to get a read. There was something wrong, she could tell that at least. But most times, it was hard to know details without asking about them. âLook,â Audrey began with a sigh. âYouâre under no obligation to talk about it, Melina. Whatever it is. But... if you did, whatâs spoken at this counter will stay at the counter.â Beside, people spilled things to bartenders all the time it seemed, for whatever reason.

she thanked her years as a thief and grifter for her ability to at the very least look neutral during certain situations, the current one being a prime example of such. but really? rana couldnât wait til the class act assholeâs tattoo was done and he was long gone from her shop. in fact, she might add him to her fondly referred to âhit listâ; the list they kept where theyâd wonderfully and mysteriously be busy anytime the jerk customer tried to pop in for a new tattoo. some business wasnât worth it in her mind.
but that wasnât her focus was on for the next few minutes while he took a break, audrey was. which was why she was currently rolled in front of the other femme with flirty smirk. âi would say âwouldnât you like to knowâ, but then weâd both know anyways. you are my favorite after all, and a special case, a.â rana returned with a wink and a soft purr, her return quickly followed by a soft laugh as her shoulders visibly relaxed in audreyâs presence alone. âah yes, now i remember. itâs a shame isnât it? how that and karma donât often times work in hand in hand to get the job done quicker?â she joked humorously, a goofy grin on her lips.
They had two different jobs but there were definitely similarities. Dealing with frequent assholes seemed to be a part of the deal. And since they resided in a town where everyone knew everyone due to its size, some of said assholes could unfortunately be regulars. But oh, Audrey and the others at the pub had definitely banned a few people here and there, for sure. Frankly, she was pretty sure Rana had been there during one of the times she ordered a dude to get the hell out and never come back. Dinner and a show.
âSpecial case,â Audrey echoed thoughtfully, pausing before cracking a smile. âFlattered...â She glanced toward the door again for a moment of time, whether it was to nonchalantly dance around Ranaâs proclamation or not. âYou know, I would suggest accidentally botching up his tattoo, but⌠I suppose the goal isnât for you to get sued.â
âNo no youâre fine.â She paused as they moved. âOkay, you were a little in my way. But iâm too polite to ever say it out loud⌠or too social awkward. And now I am talking far too much.â She paused once again. âIâm going to stop. Sorry.âÂ
The stranger ended up admitting that Dahlia had kind of been in the way, which made her feel even more guilty for her absentmindedness. But as the other continued speaking, Dahlia blinked in surprise at the words, as if relating to the explanation. âOh, no need to apologize, itâs alright,â she promised, shaking her head slightly before mustering up a polite smile. âIâm the same way... I feel as though Iâm only bothering the person,â she admitted.

thomasâ  shirt  sleeve  was  rolled  up  as  the  browsed  the  aisles  of  the  market  .  sure  it  might  be  a  little  over  priced  but  it  was  better  than  traveling  30  minutes  one  way  to  the  nearest  wal  mart  .  and  almost  everything  here  was  local  .  they  had  stopped  ,  looking  at  rice  .  had  they  had  mexican  lately   ?   he  was  counting  back  the  days  when  they  heard  a  voice  .  they  blinked  to  see  dahlia  .   â  sorry  i  -  â  they  stopped  for  a  moment  ,  laughing  .   â  was  lost  in  the  thought  of  when  was  the  last  time  my  husband  and  i  had  mexican  for  dinner  .  â
As the voice came, that was when Dahlia really seemed to recognize who was beside her. Beforehand, she had been too caught up with feeling bad over potentially being in someoneâs way. But there was a relaxation that came, and she gave the other a smile. âProfessor Stuart,â she greeted, knowing them from previous classes she had taken a while ago. His comment made her hum in thought, her gaze straying back to the shelves. âI see,â Dahlia said, gesturing toward some of the rice. âWell, if you do decide that... I recommend this brand?â she offered.

âNo, I just need some turnips.â He told her. He blinked a couple of times at her, estranged from the moment. He hadnât even thought about her personal space and he felt the guilt sink into his stomach. âSorry, I didnât even think about uhhâŚ. Sorry, I am just getting some turnips. You go.âÂ
It was one of those situations where they both seemed spaced out. âItâs alright,â Dahlia promised. He was giving her free rein to go first, and she stepped forward with a smile and a nod. She plucked up a few zucchini, carefully placing them into one of the provided little bags. Another pause came, as if curiosity came as she glanced back over at him. âUm, if you donât mind me asking... what were you making with the turnips?â She asked it carefully, but after she spoke, she started over-thinking the scenario. Was she bothering him?
anyone who knew rana knew one very important thing about her; you can be asshole to her, but as soon as you start acting that way towards anyone close to her (in this case audrey) or her employees, she wasnât going to take anymore of that. it annoyed her all the more when sheâd been having a perfectly enjoyable conversation with the gorgeous brunette while on one of her slower days. which came few and far between so she took them when she could get them. so when this behemoth of a jerk decided to waltz in off the street, demanding a tattoo whilst bragging about being able to take the painâŚrana was more than happy to oblige. and test the claim.
which was why she was currently working on a leviathan tatt on his forearm, expression neutral despite the fact that she was enjoying the fact that he clearly wasnât as tolerant of the pain as heâd claimed. but the common sense side of her couldnât let him pass outâŚwho knew if sheâd need the chair for a nicer client, eh? âalright buddy, take a 10 minute break. grab some water in the mini fridge outside in the lobby.â the man grumbled, but got up a bit unsteady to walk out, giving rana the chance to slide her stool over to audrey. âso gorgeous, where were we?â
The way that Rana was holding back was quite impressive in itself because Audrey wasnât sure if she could do that. Or maybe she was just used to throwing out jerks at the pub. Still, the ultimate sea of karma he was getting was worth it. Her expression was neutral as the man passed, and she got a closer look at the unfinished tattoo. A leviathan. Typical. Of course he would choose some mythical creature, as if he needed further reason to show how ultra-tough he was. But the tension in the room was gone once he was, allowing Audreyâs attention to return to Rana.
The remark caused her to roll her eyes. âDo you call all of your visitors that or is it just me?â Audrey quipped in amusement, tilting an eyebrow but didnât seem to expect an answer as she thought over Ranaâs question about their initial conversation topic. âNatural selection,â she responded casually, casting a nod toward the direction the man left. â-And its unfortunate slow process.â Audrey huffed, leaning back on the couch.
