Literal English Translation
Now spring brings back the thawed-out warmth, now the raging of the equinoctial sky subsides with the sweet breezes of Zephyr. Let the Phrygian plains be left behind, Catullus, and the rich land of sweltering Nicaea: let us fly away to the famed cities of Asia. Now my fluttering soul yearns to wander; now my joyful feet come alive with eagerness. Farewell, dear bands of fellow travellers, whom, having left home at the same time, split paths carry home by different routes.

Sleepy Doug Shaw - 360 Record Shop, Red Hook, Brooklyn, March 8, 2024 / Tubby's, Kingston, New York, January 14, 2024 / WFMU Frow Show Tribute
Amidst the sadness of 2026, the recent, much-too-soon passing of Doug Shaw has to be one of the saddest. I didn't know him, but the overwhelming outpouring of love for the London-born/NYC-based musician over the past week or so tells me the world is a lesser place without him.
An underground mainstay, Shaw played with White Magic and Gang Gang Dance, but I only really became aware of him sometime this decade when my friend Michael Klausman recommended the Bandcamp-only live release Sleepy at Tubby's, which completely blew me away. I remember listening at first and thinking: "Man, this guy is as good as John Martyn." And then I remember listening again and thinking: "Man, this guy is better than John Martyn!" Dazzling guitar work, beautiful vocals, an effortlessly cool vibe. An incredible talent.
Which made it all the weirder that Shaw didn't really have an actual album that properly showcased that talent. His stuff was spread across various digital platforms in a semi-careless fashion. Fair enough — there was something effortlessly cool about that, too, a refusal to play the game by anyone else's rules. Still, his legend seemed to be growing; there was a collab LP last year with Animal Collective's Geologist, as well as a lengthy feature by Andy Cush in Hearing Things.
And apparently, there's a proper album ready to go, a fact that is both heartening and depressing. Doug won't get to enjoy the inevitable rave reviews and sold-out shows he deserves. The best that the rest of us can do is listen to the man's music. His Highlife Bandcamp page is filled with brilliant stray tunes; the Roolin YouTube page just posted a terrific video from a Red Hook record store, which captures Shaw casting a spell for 50+ minutes, culminating in an absolutely heartbreaking cover of Neil's "Old Country Waltz;" Kliked also shared a similarly terrific 2024 Tubby's set, culminating in an absolutely heartbreaking cover of Robert Wyatt's "Alliance." And Jesse Jarnow paid tribute on WFMU a few days ago with an hour's worth of loosies and rarities, giving a great overview of the Sleepyverse, which is expansive and entrancing.
"Any serious moral accounting of the Weather Underground might consider how they would be remembered had they stormed a federal facility and indiscriminately fired 2,000 rounds of live ammunition, murdering 43 people in under 20 minutes (a crime actually committed by the New York State Police and correctional officers when they retook Attica in 1971). How might we judge them had they opened fire on unarmed protestors, injuring 28 and killing three by shooting them in the back (a crime actually committed by state police and highway patrol officers in the 1968 Orangeburg Massacre)? How might we remember the Weather Underground had it been J. Edgar Hoover and not Fred Hampton who lay in a drugged haze as armed men stormed into his home and shot him in his sleep?" - Emmett Rensin, A Better World Is Not Possible: Did the Weather Underground have a point?
On September 8th 1972, Robert Fripp brought his guitar and pedal board to Brian Eno's home studio. Using Eno's twin tape recorder/loop method set-up Fripp provided two takes - one for the background guitar loop and one for the foreground solos with Eno selectively manipulating which signals were committed to the final tape.

One of the aftermaths of the Chilean coup d'état in 11.9.1973 was the gathering and killing of people with opposite political views.
Victor Jara (born 28.9.1932) was one of the many thousand people imprisoned and tortured at Estadio Chile in Santiago.
He was a teacher, a theater director, a poet, and probably most known as a singer songwriter and a communist. Those being the reasons why the new far right regiment murdered him brutally at the stadium where he was held captive 16th of September in 1973.
Victor was a voice of revolution along with others, and his voice got silenced.
But his legacy lives on. 🕊️❤️

Listen/purchase: The Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music by Marisa Anderson
The Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music is a collection of nearly one thousand songs culled from the private record collection of the late Harry Smith. Assembled by Anderson after a chance encounter led to an opportunity to study and explore this treasure trove of music, the Anthology focuses on music from places that the United States has been in conflict with since 1970: Southeast Asia, the USSR and the Arabic and Islamic regions of the world. In Volume 1 Anderson presents her own deeply personal iterations of nine songs from the Anthology. Composed, transcribed and arranged through a process of trial and error, deep listening and research, Anderson charts a musical course from Afghanistan to Vietnam via Yemen, Cambodia and Turkmenistan. Interpretations of compositions ranging from Pakistani qawwali to Syrian taqsim are played with Anderson’s deft and practiced hands. Each piece on the album stands as a dialogue between Anderson and the original source recording, refracted through the prism of her own unique musical lens. Anderson’s contribution to this dialogue ultimately invites the listener to join her in asking: “Who are the people we’ve been told in our lifetimes are “unamerican?” What have we lost or been denied access to in the fallout from that label?”
