Backrooms (2026) is a great caution against nostalgia and the dangers of reminiscenting to the point that you lose the original point of events. Setting this movie in the 90s was a great idea because of course we romanticize the past- while we think of family sitcoms and boy bands there were also massive race riots and political turmoil. The monster, while comical, was a shadow of the past when gimmicky 90s commercials were all the rage to make money at any cost. He is a faded memory feeding on anything he can find because he doesn't remember his original purpose. We can enjoy remembering a nostalgic past but we also need to be critical of our past as well.
