Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.
At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.
Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”

some years ago, i think three? i talked here about a project in my town i was trying to start. a drop-in for youth, to make them less isolated, give them something to do, a welcoming place to hang out with their friends, and hopefully reduce the amount of teen drug addiction. i put posters on the walls to gather support, connected with the YMCA in my area, it looked like was really gonna get this idea off the ground.
no one signed my petition. i had one meeting with the YMCA and then they never got back to me.
all progress seemed to slow, and nothing ever came of my plan for the rest of the time i was living there. i remember weeping on the stairs because i wanted so badly to leave my town behind with something that would help the kids who are still stuck there, and it fell apart.
this summer, i couldn't find an apartment in my new city in time, so i had to return home for 4 months while college was off. i found out that in my absence, someone with more resources, connections and funding had remembered my project, and she picked up the pieces i'd left behind and tried again.
she succeeded. there is now a drop-in youth program at the local health centre in my hometown.
it finally worked. it really, really worked. thank you, candace. 🌱
I remember that! I'm so glad it worked out, eventually. It's worth it to try even if we fail, and sometimes that failure isn't even permanent. Congratulations on what you inspired!

Joey Batey signing in Newcastle last night, we did not get Madeleine but instead we got his big sister asking the questions!!! Absolutely adorable. At the start of the audience Q&A she was like "Please make it a question. I realise that I was rambling a lot, I had to keep telling myself the same thing." I have to listen to the audiobook now because apparently he sings the selkat songs!! Also he went full Tolkien and made whole languages and myths that he didn't even use, which surprises me not at all
They did the names on postits thing for the signing, so I had to explain that the reason I didn't want my name is because I'd probably be donating the book to a prison through Borderline later, thankfully he loved that idea.
My friend got the welly boots card I made for her signed, which confused things because I guess when people bring cards they are usually for him, but she was like no! Mine! 😆
