Last Post!

Throughout the programme, we have learned to work step by step towards our goals, we have acquired problem-solving, communication skills; we have learned how to draw time-management plans, how to find the best answer to our questions, how to apply strategies and methods to boost our productivity, how to come up with the best ideas…

Above all, though, our main achievement has been working as a team. We have learned from each other and learned about and through each other. And we have become friends. And that is, on top of the academic and professional experience Premium has offered to us, the most valuable thing we take out of Premium.

Today is the Closing Ceremony of the programme (4.pm Amsterdam). It is hard to believe that it is already here, it’s been quite a journey!

We are glad to show you our report’s cover page. On the whole, our main deliverables for IDS are three (the sections of our report):

Impact evaluation of the first Women in Data Science Conference held at UM (consisting of a survey and mini-interviews that we conducted during the event).

Proposal of KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), as an evaluation matrix so that IDS can assess future events

Because today is International Women’s Day and because during the conference Women in Data Science (WiDS) we had the chance to see how many talented women there are in the field, let’s toast!

This is a pic of Mia –being super focused- transcribing and analysing the mini-interviews we conducted during WiDS. We will have a better insight of the event in the coming weeks, when we are done analysing all the data we have collected via these mini-interviews and the survey we designed.

Women in Data Science (WiDS) is just around the corner and we are ready for it!

WiDS started as a conference at Stanford in November 2015. Now, WiDS includes a global conference with approximately 150+ regional events worldwide.

WiDS Maastricht is an independent event organized by Amrapali Zaveri (†) and Visara Urovi (Institute of Data Science, Maastricht University) to coincide with the event held at Stanford University with the aim of inspiring and supporting women in the field as well as to educate data scientists worldwide.

WiDS is taking place at Paul Henri Spaaklaan 1, 6229 GT Maastricht (C0.020 at PHS1) this Thursday from 9:00 to 16:00. Check the links to know more about it:

Starting a project without any previous team-work-project-oriented background? Being in Premium has given us the opportunity of taking part of different workshops:

- We discovered our strengths and weaknesses completing different tests connected to personality, team work roles and personal abilities and skills as a preparation for the workshop “Discover your competences”.  During the workshop we got a better insight not only into what we are good at but also into what we need to perform well.

- The workshop “Project-Based-Working” was useful to actually order our priority list and start working on the project according to what we want to achieve from day 1 using a defined time-line and a realistic list of objectives.

- During the “Teamwork & Communication” workshop we learned more about personality profiles and behavioural patterns that we can moderate and even use when working in a project.

This has been a busy weekend! When you start working in a team it takes some time to actually discover “who is who”. It’s not a matter of which strengths or weaknesses each member of the team has but, rather, how those weaknesses and strengths complement each other in order to get a balance.

To discover how we work together we did a team-building riddle about horses. It was so fun: we laughed about misspelled names and some slang words, and we even learned some horse breeds. On the top of that, it was a good exercise to see our team dynamic.

Hi out there! This is our first team post from our project in collaboration with the Institute Data Science in Maastricht. Our main goal is to measure the impact of the fore-coming conference Women in Data Science (WiDS) in order to support female scientists as well as foster further gender equality within the field.

In our first meeting we got to know more about each other and we also decided our team charter and our preliminary budget.
