oh i had a gnarly dream that AO3 got taken down overnight and there was no explanation at all for why so we all had to return to fanfiction.net and i vividly remember being like 'idk how to use this' and i couldn't navigate the site at all which led to a breakdown and there was no tagging system and listen guys archive of our own is the single best thing to ever happen to fandom and we should all be continuously grateful forever and ever and ever

I like how some people in fandom spaces seem to believe yelling and making themselves upset will spontaneously make a character they like a fan favourite.

Like, absolutely 100% talk about underrated characters, I’ll kiss you on the mouth if your post single-handedly sparks a fascination for a character for me. Those are very positive and community building posts which add something to the conversation. What I’m annoyed at is when people insist if people just paid attention/were smarter they would be as obsessed with a character as they are.

Cuz to be perfectly real with you, I get obsessed with the characters I think most about, and being attracted to a character causes you to think about them more, therefore it kinda makes sense why the most attractive characters are usually the most popular. That’s not even saying anything about how deeply people can explore a characters internal life and behaviours when they, say, write or read about them in a fanfic.

So in the kind of online fandom spaces you’ll find on tumblr which are known to be in very general terms majority women and queer people, I mean, yeah, the most attractive guy in a show has a couple more tickets in the lottery bin to be the fan favourite.

Loving underrated characters is a beautiful side of fandom spaces which can foster a really lovely close knit sub-community. I think it’s awesome. Some characters won’t be beloved by nearly everyone in the fandom, and some will. I find from my experience of both sides the best way to react to that is to go with the flow. Find your people, block who you want to. It’s fandom! It’s online community! Build that community and try your best to contribute what you can and at least to me, at a point how universally beloved a character is begins to matter less and less.

Anyways that’s my fandom ecosystem observations for the day. I’m really bummed to see people not having as much fun as they could. By whatever means, I’m just hoping people find something that doesn’t frustrate them enough to discourse about other fans personal preferences.
