Poem of the day:
"B" by Sarah Kay
If I should have a daughter, instead of āMom,ā sheās gonna call me āPoint B,āĀ because that way she knows that no matter what happens,Ā at least she can always find her way to me.
And Iām going to paint solar systems on the backs of her handsĀ so she has to learn the entire universe before she can say,Ā āOh, I know that like the back of my hand.ā
And sheās going to learn that this life will hit you hard in the face,Ā wait for you to get back up just so it can kick you in the stomach.Ā But getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way to remind your lungsĀ how much they like the taste of air.Ā There is hurt, here, that cannot be fixed by Band-Aids or poetry.Ā So the first time she realizes that Wonder Woman isnāt coming,Ā Iāll make sure she knows she doesnāt have to wear the cape all by herselfĀ because no matter how wide you stretch your fingers,Ā your hands will always be too small to catch all the pain you want to heal. Believe me, Iāve tried.
And, ābaby,ā Iāll tell her, ādonāt keep your nose up in the air like that.Ā I know that trick; Iāve done it a million times.Ā Youāre just smelling for smokeĀ so you can follow the trail back to a burning house,Ā so you can find the boy who lost everything in the fireĀ to see if you can save him. Or else find the boy who lit the fire in the first place,Ā to see if you can change him.āĀ But I know she will anyway,Ā so instead Iāll always keep an extra supply of chocolate and rain boots nearby, because there is no heartbreak that chocolate canāt fix.Ā Okay, thereās a few heartbreaks that chocolate canāt fix.Ā But thatās what the rain boots are for,Ā because rain will wash away everything, if you let it.
I want her to look at the world through the underside of a glass-bottom boat,Ā to look through a microscope at the galaxies that exist on the pinpoint of a human mind,Ā because thatās the way my mom taught me.
That thereāll be days like this.Ā ā« Thereāll be days like this, my momma said. ā«Ā When you open your hands to catch and wind up with only blisters and bruises; when you step out of the phone booth and try to flyĀ and the very people you want to save are the ones standing on your cape;Ā when your boots will fill with rain,Ā and youāll be up to your knees in disappointment.Ā And those are the very days you have all the more reason to say thank you.Ā Because thereās nothing more beautifulĀ than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline,Ā no matter how many times itās sent away.
You will put the wind in winsome, lose some.Ā You will put the star in starting over, and over.Ā And no matter how many land mines erupt in a minute,Ā be sure your mind lands on the beauty of this funny place called life.
And yes, on a scale from one to over-trusting, I am pretty damn naive.Ā But I want her to know that this world is made out of sugar.Ā It can crumble so easily,Ā but donāt be afraid to stick your tongue out and taste it.Ā āBaby,ā Iāll tell her,Ā āremember, your momma is a worrier, and your poppa is a warrior,Ā and you are the girl with small hands and big eyes who never stops asking for more.ā
Remember that good things come in threes; and so do bad things.Ā And always apologize when youāve done something wrong,Ā but donāt you ever apologize for the way your eyes refuse to stop shining. Your voice is small, but donāt ever stop singing.Ā
And when they finally hand you heartache,Ā when they slip war and hatred under your door a nd offer you handouts on street-corners of cynicism and defeat,Ā you tell them that they really ought to meet your mother
How books shaped my perception of the world
Growing up,
I was convinced,
That the famous five would turn up and take me on an adventure,
Or that Iād find fairies in the garden-
A secret garden- a secret garden possessed by magic;
And Iād explore and meet a ghost, or a wizard,
Or a talking lion and maybe Iād discover a whole new world
And battle my fears and pirates and growing up
I somehow knew
That life would be exciting,
Because Iād find buried treasure and be famous
Or Iād foil a dastardly plot against the Queen-
Either way, Iād be a hero back in my small home town,
And my neighbours would actually know my name,
And Iād have a dog. My partner in crime.
Growing up,
I realised that it did not matter if I was tall, or awkward,
Because handsome princes have to marry the heroine,
Thatās just the way itās written,
So I was sure to have a happy ending in the end.
And Iād live in a castle, with a library,
With enough books to fill my head with nonsense.
