Best of 2018: kinderboeken
Best of 2018: Boeken
(in Dutch)Â
Best of 2018: TV
The League Of Gentlemen Anniversary Special (2018)Â
Royston Vasey was in 2018 even terug. Legendarisch comedyhorrorreeks maakte 3 nieuwe afleveringen. Nog altijd even fout en geniaal.Â
Stranger Things Seizoen 2 (Netflix)
Mockumentary-reeks die ‘Making a Murderer’ parodieert.Â
Mad Men Seizoen 1
Orange Is The New Black Seizoen 6Â
Big Little Lies (HBO)Â
Best of 2018: Film
BlackKklansman (2018, director: Spike Lee)
Get out (2017, director: Jordan Peele)Â
The Big Sick (2017, director: Michael Showalter)Â
Hartverwarmende romantische komedie.Â
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013, director: Jim Jarmusch)Â
Existentiële vampierenfilm. Typisch Jarmusch filmpje.Â
The Shape Of Water (2018, director: Guillermo Del Toro)Â
45 Years (2015, Andrew Haigh)Â
Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017, Martin McDonagh)Â
Bijtende aanklacht, en tegelijkertijd erg grappig.Â
The Death Of Stalin (2018, Armando Iannucci)Â

Best of 2018: muziek
Mary McCaslin - Way Out West (Philo, 1974)Â
Prachtig ingetogen folkalbum.Â
Wendy & Bonnie - Genesis (Skye Records, 1969)
Psychedelische tweepop uit de jaren 1960
Various Artists - American Epic (The Sessions) (2017)Â
Jack White nodigt tal van moderne Amerikaanse artiesten als Beck, Betty Lavyette, The Avett Brothers, ... ) uit om muziek te maken zoals vroeger. Ook de tv-reeks is de moeite!Â
Damien Jurado - The Horizon Just Laughed (2018)Â
Wordt stilaan een van de beste singersongwriters. Voor fans van Duyster.  Beluister op Bandcamp.Â
Nina Simone - Wild is The Wind (Phillips, 1966)
Junior Wells’ Chicago Blues Band - Hoodoo Man Blues (1965, Delmark)Â
Op Rateyourmusic.com bestempeld als de beste bluesplaat out there. Inderdaad geweldig energiek album.Â
Jim White - Waffles, Triangles & Jesus (2017, Loose Music)Â
Arthur Russell - Love is Overtaking Me (2016)
Arthur Russell waagt zich aan slaapkamerpop. Beluister het album op Bandcamp
Swamp Dogg - Love, loss and Autotune (2018)
The Caretaker - Everywhere At The End of Time (2016 - ...)Â
Bruce Haack - The Electric Lucifer (1969)
Courtney Barnett - Tell Me How You Really Feel (2018)Â
Laidback rockalbum. Beluister het album op Bandcamp.Â
Lump - Lump (2018)
Samenwerking tussen LAura Marling en Mike Lindsay van Tunng. Beluister het album op Bandcamp.Â
Baby Huey - The Baby Huey Story (1971)
Haley Heynderickx - I Need to Start a Garden (2018)Â
Country Blues is mijn favoriete blues.Â
Tyler Childers - Purgatory (2018)
Gewone degelijke alt. CountryÂ
Amen Dunes - Freedom (2018)Â
Bezwerende indie pop. Beluister het op Bandcamp.Â
Karine Polwart & Pippa Murphy - A Pocket of Wind Resistance (2017)Â
Ierse folk gecombineerd met elektronica. Sferisch plaatje. Beluister het op Bandcamp.Â
Jake Xerxes Fussell - What In The Natural World (2017)Â
Erg aangename folkplaat, ideaal voor bij wandeling. Beluister op Bandcamp.Â
Nice new Andrew Bird Song!Â
My 365 favourite albums
1. Nick Drake - Pink Moon (Island Records, 1972)
Listen if you like:Â introspective folk
Here we after, after a whole year, I finally arrive at the number one. ‘Pink Moon’ by Nick Drake is my absolute all-time favorite, because of the impact it had on me when I first heard it and because of the timelessness of the songs. Agreed, it’s a sad album, but I love sad as I’ve been showing with this list. It’s comforting in a way too. Nick Drake died too soon, but at least in his short life he made a difference for a lot of people.Â
-----------------------------
So, 365 days, 365 albums. I must admit it was quite a job writing something every day, especially writing it in English which is not my native language. I’m happy I managed to hold on, and at the same I’m glad it’s over. Hopefully, I inspired some of you guys to discover or rediscover some music. For now, this blog will become dormant for a while, like it was before last year, but at some point I’ll start posting again, be it about books, comics, writers or music.Â

2. The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow (Sub Pop, 2003)
Listen if you like:Â indie pop, The Beatles, The Beach Boys
Really? Is ‘Chutes Too Narrow’ really the second best album out there? Off course not, but it’s MY number 2. The fun I had in my life listening to this album, the way I used to cover these songs on guitar (and still do), the way I can sing each lyric without ever realizing what these songs are truly about, the summer breeze, ... The Shins have never made such a perfect pop album ever after, but they at least made one. And I’ll keep playing it over and over, as soon as the sun is out!Â
My 365 favourite albums
3. Songs:Ohia - Mi Sei Apparso Comme Un Fantasmo (Cargo, 2001)
Listen if you like:Â slow, slower, slowest core
Jason Molina’s fifth entry in this list, making him (together with Bill Callahan & Goldmund) the leading artists in this list.Â
This album is probably not that well-known, because it’s a live album. But it’s perfect from beginning to end. It is a concert that you wish would never end, keep on playing whole night. What can I say? Just listen, listen, listen to this and feed your soul with gravitas.Â
(and then go out and enjoy the sun).Â

My 365 favourite albums
4. Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy - I see A Darkness (Drag City, 1999)
Listen if you like:Â slowcore, smog, sadcore
I’ve featured many sad albums in this list, but this is sadness nec plus ultra. Everytime I listen to this album, it feels as if it’s been recorded in the afterlife, by lost souls who are doomed to wander around for eternity and then spend their time drinking ghost whiskey and haunting people. I just can’t imagine this album being recorded in a studio somewhere. Its atmosphere is haunting, and beautiful at the same time.Â
My favorite Halloween album, you could say. To listen if you want to get lost in the fog.Â
My 365 favourite albums
5. Andrew Bird - & The Mysterious Production of Eggs (Fargo, 2005)
Listen if you like:Â violin, whistling, electric guitars
This album makes me instantly happy. It reminds me of all the times I saw Andrew Bird live, each time giving an absolutely stunning performance. I can’t play the violin and have a mediocre whistle, but I’ve got Andrew Bird and that’s all that matters.
My 365 favourite albums
6. The Black Heart Procession - 2 (Touch & Go, 1999)
Listen if you like:Â Pinback, 16 Horsepower, WovenhandÂ
What is it that makes you connect with some albums? I’m pretty sure that one of the answers is the time when you first heard it. If I hadn’t bought this album when I was 18, just because of the album cover, and hadn’t been in my first year of college, meaning if I heard it at a later point in my life, I’m convinced this wouldn’t be anywhere near my top 365. I would’ve enjoyed listening to it, but it wouldn’t have had the same emotional intensity which it had back when I was 18 years old.Â
That doesn’t matter. The nostalgic feelings bubbling up when listening to this again convince me that this album will always be one of my dearest.Â
My 365 favourite albums
7. Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell (Asthmatic Kitty, 2015)Â
Listen if you like:Â sad music
So the sad Sufjan Stevens wins from the sufjan Stevens in party mode. I was Sufjan play this album live on a great festival in England (End Of The Road), and it must’ve been one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen.Â
It’s scary to discover that this album is already 3 years old, because it still feels it came out yesterday. Anyway, still as heartbreaking as the first time I heard it.Â
My 365 favourite albums
8. Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left (Island, 1970)
Listen if you like:Â British folk, introspective folk
Nick Drake’s debut album shows how talented this guy was. Just listen!Â
Third time Nick Drake is in the list. Look here and here. Â

9. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (Nonesuch, 2002)Â
Listen if you like: Wilco, Jim O’Rourke
What’s there to say about this album? From the first words (I’m an American Aquarium Drinker) to the timeless classic Jesus, Etc. This album is just perfect from A to Z, and this is partly thanks to Jim O’Rourke who did the production, and the fine musicians this band consists of. ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’ sounds like an old friend you meet with once a year.Â
My 365 favourite albums
10. M. Ward - Transfiguration of Vincent (Merge, 2003)
Listen if you like:Â singersongwriter, folk, music recorded at night
This was a very important album to me, because it took me away from the music that could be heard on national radio and guided me into the depths of indie music. Back then, you could download single MP3′s from online music shops, and that’s how I got to know ‘Sad, Sad Song’. Now still, it’s the song with which I lure people into the realms of indie music, showing them that there is a lot of good music out there.Â
