Ok. So.
I am - like the majority of this fandom - aware of the issues PB have done. Iβm sure we all know what im referring to; the misrepresentation of POC, not enough female LIβs and the bad distribution of screen time for LIβs in certain books. I think it is wrong that PB didnβt act upon playerβs voices earlier, and how they seemed to brush peopleβs opinions away. That is not okay.
Although, I was personally very pleased with the statement that Oliver came out with. I think he did a good job apologizing and acknowledging his and the companyβs mistakes. And I loved how he incorporated the ways to fix them, and telling us there will be a change.
Here is the problem;
I love being a part of fandoms, because you can share your personal opinions, feelings etc. and share your obsession for characters/celebrities/books/movies/etc. Something being a part of the choices fandom have taught me, is to look critically on plots, character development and storylines - which I am very grateful for. I love when I see people have an opinion that is contrary to my own. I learn, see things from their perspective and understand that your own identity and experience can make you look at things differently from other people. I will always be grateful when people educate me, other people and companies on their ignorance or misinterpretation. Therefore - I am part proud and happy that so many people took a stand with the Ethan/Rafael/OH2 LI, because it actually led to PB changing the storyline up for the better. I supported the constructive criticism, because I agreed with how unfair the LIβs were treated. Especially since OH is a book with such diverse characters, it is icky that Ethan was being focused so much on, as he is almost the only white character, and the only white LI. I agreed that PB could and should be doing better.
Now. Like I said, βI was part proud and happyβ and that is a reflection solely on the people that voiced their opinions and called PB out on the racial/injustice/unfair treatment issues. It is feelings I felt towards people trying to make PB a better company, and teaching them whilst demanding better. What I also was, was part frustrated and annoyed. This is towards all the people that was bullying not only a company, but actual writers - people, that have real emotions. And before you twist my words - no, Iβm not babyβing a company and grown adults. No, Iβm not saying that racist behavior should ever be tolerated. Iβm saying that those people who would leave criticism, hate and pure negativity for the writers - they made me feel frustrated and annoyed.
It is now to a point were we are judging every book, every character, every sneak peek and every move that PB does. Like I mentioned before, I love the discussions and different opinions. What I donβt love is how everything now is pure negativity. And the intentions are to make PB feel bad. The choices fandom is no longer a place where we can reflect and analyze, it is a place where everything is picked apart and people will get shamed for the stupidest reasons. I hate that some of the outrageous acts has been contacting writers and harassing them. That. Is. Wrong. I canβt comprehend that some of yβall actually think that is okay??? Not only is it of course extremely wrong, you are also removing the importance of valid complaints and issues - by acting childish and dumb, and only caring about spreading negativity.
I donβt really have a conclusion since I donβt know what to conclude. I just hope you understand the difference between wanting change for actual valid issues, and wanting to spread negativity and hate, only to piss people off and make the writers feel bad. Thatβs all. Thank you for reading.
I completely agree.
It's become a cesspool of toxic negativity where it seems people are thriving on causing divisions in the fandom and shaming them for choosing a white MC, dating a white LI, liking a forbidden romance trope, shaming them for every thing they do.
It's so overwhelmingly miserable and not the fandom I remember joining.
