credit for the house vicodin prescription goes to u/marcusbechtel on the HouseMD subreddit, the wilson image came from the House wiki, and of course the whole thing is inspired by the classic video "Every episode of House ever". The rest was all me.

I don't think Americans appreciate but to Australians your creatures are just as exotically cute and/or terrifying as ours are to you. every Aussie I've taken to America has been infatuated with squirrels or possoms or armadillos or racoons, and completely terrified of bears.
every criticism of effective altruism seems to value the lives of africans at ~0. its like arguments about vegetarianism but vastly crazier, because it's yknow. it's human children! theyre not even that far away! you could take a plane and go see them! EA matters, a lot!
The recent NY Post hit piece against effective altruism basically says it outright. Giving money to people who live in the third world "takes away building relationships with your neighbor, that impulse to give locally"
Lives saved in Africa are just abstract statistics, numbers, and caring about them makes you a nerd. Lives in the first world are real people, and if you withhold from them their chicken nuggets and opera houses you must hate human flourishing.
just throwing this out there

the thing that bewilders me about a lot of fantasy readers is that they read about settings and plots featuring imperialism, war, and slavery and then call the inclusion of violence, abuse, and sexual exploitation "edgy" and "gratuitous" and it's like what did you think was happening. why were you under the impression that you were going to get a cozy story about fascism or something. far be it from me to criticize anyone for not wanting to read about torture in their spare time, and there are certainly cases where heavy subjects are poorly executed, but is it not equally insulting to sanitize them for a feel-good adventure.. like no one put a gun to your head and forced you to give your fantasy novel an enslaved protagonist. sometimes writing is supposed to make you feel bad
My incredibly bleak philosophy of compassion is that we should all pity each other horribly and practice an according amount of kindness.
I asked for a pastry at the coffee shop. When I raised my card up to pay, he simply said "you're good." and waved it away. I wondered why. I wondered what made him think I deserved to have my order be free. Sparing me those two dollars.
Sitting down at the table, I remembered the scars on my arm. The universal signifier of "This Kid Needs Help." Maybe his kindness was only out of pity. He saw those and assumed there was some great misery and wanted to offer me some relief. It's generally good to be kind to people who are hurting. But I wasn't hurting that bad.
The thing is, there is some great misery. People generally aren't doing that great. There is a great misery within me and within him and within everyone, and some people notice the pain, some people express it, others don't. But we all suffer from something.
It doesn't matter if someone seems to deserve some relief. Everyone needs it. Everyone is suffering constantly. Some more than others, but still. This Kid Needs Help applies to everyone.
Thirty minutes later, I went to get a second pastry, intending to pay and leave a tip this time. It was the same cashier. As he reached to grab it for me, I saw scars on his arm.
But it doesn't really matter. He'd deserve a tip anyway. Because it's never just us hurting.
Put in the tags the completely finished (whether cancelled or wrapped up on its own terms) TV series that has YOUR perfect ending, however you define that
Please don’t include huge spoilers for the specifics of the endings, and it would also make me happy if people don’t use this to talk about the shows whose endings they hated

“I don’t like this expression “First World problems.” It is false and it is condescending. Yes, Nigerians struggle with floods or infant mortality. But these same Nigerians also deal with mundane and seemingly luxurious hassles. Connectivity issues on your BlackBerry, cost of car repair, how to sync your iPad, what brand of noodles to buy: Third World problems. All the silly stuff of life doesn’t disappear just because you’re black and live in a poorer country. People in the richer nations need a more robust sense of the lives being lived in the darker nations. Here’s a First World problem: the inability to see that others are as fully complex and as keen on technology and pleasure as you are.”

Bad things happening to the economy does, in fact, directly translate to real human suffering, and it's disingenuous to the extreme to pretend that it doesn't mean anything.
