Like, this attitude towards PRC as less friendly to LGBT+ people comes from the way that people only narrowly measure LGBT+ rights as that of marriage equality, and, not, like, how far the state will go to protect its LGBT+ people. A country where a president signed "Marginalize All Transgender Women" order will turn around and act like a country where there's over-the-counter estradiol and an anti-homophobia cybersquad is the country where LGBT+ people need to worry about their safety. As someone whose professional area is in sexual minorities (and folk religion but that's not relevant here), it's very odd to see. It's not just me, though. LGBT+ rights activists with a backbone in the USA has talked about the fact that marriage equality is nowhere near enough in the early years of the 2010s.
PRC's judicial system has, as of this week, passed a memorandum/guideline that banned discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression in judgments, including the written terms in legal protections against discrimination. This means that PRC, as a nation of 1.4 billion people, are offering the same level of legal protection towards LGBT+ people as the most progressive prefectures and citites in Japan, places that I'd have said is the easiest to live as LGBT+ in Northeast Asia until this week. The ruling acknowledges that insults and humiliation for these reasons can lead to punishment and compensation, that companies cannot discriminate in hiring, firing, or work environment, and that schools can be punished for bullying LGBTQIA+ students. This is not to say that equal rights for marriage should never be granted, but the progress being made here is not only steady and positive, but honestly leaps and bounds compared to how slow it's been for Japan, previously the most friendly country in the region for LGBT+ rights, at least in terms of social attitude.
random PSA, I know a lot of people use duckduckgo as a Google alternative search engine, but it always kind of annoyed me when I was using it because it felt like No Name Brand Google
I have switched to using Startpage.com and vastly prefer it. for one thing, instead of displaying an "AI summary" at the top of the search results (unless you turn it off, yes I know), it displays the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article, with link, whenever it finds one that's relevant.

I’ve switched to duckduckgo as my primary search engine a while ago, but I find myself falling back to google for some tricky queries, so I'm doing a little comparison test on a single query below the cut (this is of course not comprehensive or covering all types of searches but it's a demo with a real song lyric I was trying to remember this evening so it's at least a use case I actually have)
tldr: startpage is the only free option that was as good as Google for my test (kagi also got it but it’s paid)
Query is "lyric a dream where you're next to me no one has to leave you just keep me company the beths" (I did not remember this song lyric right, for the record, and literally nothing found it before I remembered the band name)

kagi (I had to make an account, smallweb didn't have it, but I'd been wanting to try it anyways): linked to spotify for 2 am
For completion, google (like normal google, also didn't give me an ai overview for this one for whatever reason)

DuckDuckGo: gave me links to song lyric finders. Note: the previous commenter was a little unfair here, lots of search engines use the bing index plus their own whatever, and what microsoft gets from ddg (and has promised not to do anything with, which may or may not be trustworthy)
Qwant: also just links to lyric finders. Notably slow (not like, minutes, but definitely 4+ seconds which is where I start noticing)
SearX: it did some weird redirects, but once it redirected, also links to a-z lyrics and then a few results down some lyric finders
Gibiru: didn't find my lyric and linked to a lot of music related but not related to my lyric reddit/insta posts. So maybe a good choice if you're looking for more responses from people vs websites, but for this lyric question it's doing worse. Also concerningly, labeling itself as copyright 2021
Swisscows: links to a bunch of individual songs (genius pages etc) that are not right and a beths redit ama
Gigablast: I just did the 100 search engines option (which is also what you get if you hit enter) and it's kind of impressive that it's worse imo than the individual search engines it's querying, which is to say also a bunch of links to song pages that are not the song I'm looking for
oscobo: more links to specific wrong pages including the reddit ama and some yt/insta links

luxxle: this has an ai mode and links to a chat on its homepage so I don't think it's going to be a big fave around here, also linked to a bunch of wrong song lyrics
presearch.com: linked to song lyric finders, notably slow but it has a cute loading graphic!
out of a sense of fairness, I did try the top listed lyric finder (chosic, pretty consistently) and it did not find my lyric (so as much as I say just give me the links and let me click through more that's not the solution here)
Not a general purpose search engine
WolframAlpha is extremely cool and I hope people aren't put off by their ai description (it's been around for ages and is relatively limited purpose) However I wouldn't consider it a general purpose search engine: it's really best for math/science problems. It doesn't even parse my song lyric question right, but that's a misuse of the search engine anyways. It will tell me how many ping pong balls could fit in the sears tower though!
Boardreader is specific to message boards and doesn't have anything relevant to beths lyrics I guess. I tried searching "wind and rain lyric versions" as something that felt related but fair (I know there are forums for trad songs! If I was just looking for that on ddg I might specify mudcat for example) and it didn't get anything, so I'd say you may have to start with whatever kind of forums it does index, which they haven't listed anywhere, so this is borderline unusable for me
Disconnect appears to be a wrapper for other search engines so it's not relevant to the quality question (or rather its quality is equal to these other ones)

Infinity Search: well this literally would not load for me with the provided link and then when I ddg'ed infinity search I got something with a login so not for me. Looks like they have a github up and you can self host but I cannot live like this.
Search encrypt: I think they may be dead? The link here linked to some kind of garbagey website where the search bar searched in that page and couldn't answer simple queries, and the first result from ddg was last updated in 2020 and doesn't load results (or possibly loads results that are 100% blocked by ublock?)
mojeek and wilby.me both failed to get me useful results for a simple query ("love the magician chords" because I'm on a theme here). I like the idea of focusing on personal websites (I was going to list this under not general purpose) but you have to be able to find things and it's not like I gave a conversational query, neither site gave a page that had that string in it and there are definitely sites that do, including at least one small personal site that ddg gave me a year ago and unfortunately won't give me today
