Recently I had sort of a dream regarding smiles and what they express. I am sure someone has done some research or has tried to find a correlation between how people smile and what MBTI type they are, but nevermind I wanted to share my messy thoughts with you. 

I have always found smiles the stronger point of the human body, I don’t really know why but, to me, they can reflect how truly a person is, if you really know how to look into them. It is easy to fake a smile, obviously, but it’s just a matter of interpersonal intelligence to get when someone is being truly itself or not.

Whatever.

I have reached to the conclusion that there’s something similar among people with the same dominant cognitive function and the way they smile. Of course, the auxiliar function plays an important role too (specially if the dominant one is a Perceiving function -I have observed that “Thinkers” tend to smile more awkwardly and/or aggressively than “Feelers”, but it’s kind of a stupid observation, I’m not relying on it for now-).

So, since pictures/gifs will probably be more self-explanatory than my words, I’ll try to illustrate and match my thoughts with them as good as possible. Also, since fictional characters and kpop idols are the people I am most certain of their MBTI type (sad but true) I’m using idols’ gifs for this accurate theory. Just in sake of science. Take this as a DISCLAIMER ok

Fe - Comfort: this one was the one I dreamt of. I suddenly realized Fe smiles are so warming, it looks like they were hugging you and saying “it’s alright” but without the need of touching you at all. As long as they are honest smiles, they give the sensation of understanding and emotional control of the situation. They imply that there’s nothing to worry about. It feels like they’re so pleased with their lives and current situation, even though they may open the mouth a second later to say the opposite (if so). Their smile is the physical representation of paying attention to someone in order to make them feel better. They got this especial expression in the face that makes you feel at ease.

(Both are ESFJ)

Ne - Sunbeam: major key aspect to spot an ENxP: they ALWAYS smile widely in pictures or videos. It’s their nature. They probably have the brightest, purest and more innocent smiles. They irradiate contagious happiness and make you want to smile as well. Usually their smile suggest they’re very friendly and ready to have fun. They seem to have nothing to hide, they come across as people ready to be wide open to you, although nothing far from reality, (my experience says ENxPs are one of the most introvert and secretive types among the “extraverted” ones). You can see the energy in their eyes, and they’re also very quick changing their facial expressions, so it’s pretty normal for them to just burst into laughs a moment after.

(ENFP and ENTP)

Se - Charm: I bet you were expecting something like “seduction” or “sex-appeal” I don’t know, but nope. Those are all stereotypes. Actually, Se-dom smiles are usually very soft, but with an obvious glimpse of charm. Their eyes tend to catch the receptor’s whole attention, -maybe ESTPs are more “intimidating” than ESFP while doing it, so I’m not sure-. Also, I’ve seen some kind of mix between the friendly Ne and the gentle Fi smile (we’ll get there later). When it comes to smiling, Se doms are not as shy as IxFP may be, but neither are as open as ENxP (tho at laughing they probably are). They give the impression of knowing they have your attention and want to keep it and to make sure they look appealing -not in a romantic or sexual way- to everybody around them.

Te - Amiability: this is a difficult one. ExTJ are not as intimidating as it is said they are, but yet, their smile doesn’t suggest especial emotional connection or understanding. However, since them and their dominant function are branded as “aggressive”or “bossy” when they smile they tear down that stereotype. Te users usually smile with a clever look in the eyes, staring directly at you. They’re saying “I trust you, I like you enough to smile at you like this” -we’re talking always about honest behaviours, of course-. I’ve seen a lot of Te-doms smiling even more widely than ESxPs, and I don’t have a theory for this, I guess they’re not especially interested in coming across as fancy, and since they tend to smile “less”, when they do it it means they are willing to build a relationship with you and even to let you know more about their inner selves -this is: deep down they’re the softest-. 

(ESTJ and ENTJ)

Fi - Softntess: let’s say it: INFP and ISFP usually have the softest and sweetest smile ever. Whether they are more or less shy doesn’t matter because their facial expression seems always kind of bashful. They always show a discreet smile that possibly turns into a big one; sometimes they even have what is called “eye-smile”: you almost see more happiness in their eyes than in their lips, However, the relevant thing is: seeing them smile at you means knowing you have connected with them at some level. You have their full understanding and probably their esteem as well. I think it’s not so easy for a stranger to make them smile comfortably, so you should feel very appreciated when your IXFP smiles at you.

Ni - Relief: gathering gifs for this I’ve realized that Ni dom users tend to smile awkwardly (most INTJ) and shyly (most INFJ) 99% of the time, like, they don’t even get to show they theeh at all. So, seeing them half-laughing is probably more revealing since it is the result of a normally reserved and restrained person who finally has set himself/herself free. What I mean is: INxJs have often their heads in the clouds, they tend to overthink and overanalyse everything so they “don’t plan” to engage with the immediate atmosphere and just smile to come across as friendly or appealing (actually this especially goes for INTJs lmao). They seem to be always on the lookout or lost in their thoughts, so when they finally smile comfortably they’d probably laugh as well, finally connected to their outer world. Therefore, their facial expression is usually composed by an avoiding gaze (oh God why am I doing this) and a wide smile (oh my God I am really enjoying the moment). They seem relieved and maybe amazed about the situation or even about how they’re feeling at the moment. 

(INTJ and INFJ)

Si - Engagement: it’s a weird word to describe it, I know, but It just came up to me. This is how I see ISxJs’ smiles: reserved but fulfilling. High Si users usually have a subtle expression which denotes gentleness -whatever ISTJs stereotypes may be-. Their smiles imply control and tidiness, or at least that’s what they seem to reflect. But I also see some sort of comfort, a different one from Fe users (well, in ISFJs that’s a little more difficult to explain) that’s why I thought about “engagement”. While Si users smile, then tend to make an especial eye-contact, between “I am delighted I’m this happy because of you/this” and “thank you”. This is some kind of commitment: “I’m not smiling just because, I’m smiling because I really feel it, I can’t find another way to express myself”. 

(Both ISTJ)

Ti - Containment: okay if Ni users are awkward smiling Ti users are even worse. Forget about what you know about shyness-as-a-personality-trait and focus on IxTPs’ smiles because it’s practically the representation of bashfulness. They often avoid the gaze, and probably if you see one Ti user smiling non awkwardly it’s because they found something funny or interesting, not for politeness or the sake of being nice. However, even in the most comfortable atmosphere among friends or relatives, their smile has always a glimpse of containment. But, still, I find IxTPs’ smiles very warm and sweet, maybe because they’re the result of someone who tries but can’t hold back their emotions anymore. (Just a casual observation: I don’t know why this two guys bend forward while smiling. It’s like they have to express their feelings with the body too but I guess that doesn’t need to suit for most of IxTPs.)

ENFP: I’m enthralled by you.

It’s not that their love lacks depth, intensity or commitment – quite the opposite, in fact – but when an ENFP says they love you, you can guarantee their heart is turning a thousand miniature cartwheels every time you enter the room. This type loves the way they do everything else – passionately, fully and enthusiastically. The thought of you drives them wild and their ‘I love you’ roughly translates to ‘My heart is basically BURSTING OUT OF MY CHEST every time I think about you, which is approximately all of the time.’

ENTP: I’m fascinated by you.

ENTPs view relationships the way they view everything in their lives – as an exciting puzzle to be explored and investigated. This type falls into fascination with the people in their lives – wanting to learn as much as they can about them and piece together their intricacies. When this type says ‘I love you,’ they are not just promising to care for you, they are letting you know that they are absolutely fascinated by you – and that they want to spend a significant amount of time trying to figure you out.

ISTJ: I will maintain my commitment to you come hell or high water.

When an ISTJ loves you, he or she is in it for the long haul. So long as both of you are on the same page, this dedicated type is willing to put in a seemingly endless amount of effort to make a relationship work. ‘Love’ truly is a verb to the ISTJ, and when they tell you ‘I love you,’ they’re preaching their unshakeable commitment to you.

INFP: Loving you has become a part of who I am.

Love is a deeply personal experience to the INFP and they take the feeling anything but lightly. When an INFP loves you, they aren’t just concerned for your wellbeing – they feel all of your pains, your struggles and your triumphs as their own. Loving you becomes a part of their core identity and part of the way in which they define their very selves. Tips for Dating an ENFJ Personality

Consider finding creative ways to indulge your partner in his or her ability to pick up on the emotions and feelings of others is a great way to show that you care. A local play, for instance, would give your partner tons of feelings to pick up on and can be a very moving experience for a “giver.”

The time may come when you need to offer your partner some constructive criticism. Be careful how you deliver your thoughts and feelings, as ENFJs are extremely sensitive in this regard. Failure to do so could leave your “giver” blaming his or her self and feeling unworthy. 

Avoid taking a tone that implies accusation when speaking to your ENFJ. Having a few solutions ready to offer can help your partner feel less emotionally attacked. 

They may seem overprotective or have a constant need to hear a partner verbalize their feelings and/or thoughts. The latter can be healthy in moderation but in excess you may begin to feel as though your partner isn’t giving you enough space.

If you begin to feel unhappy then you need to express these feelings to your “giver” in the smoothest way possible while asserting your positive feelings for him or her at the same time. Explain that you care about them and you appreciate that they want you to be happy, but that their overzealous attempts to provide for your needs have become stifling.

Your partner may also be prone to completely forgetting their own needs. When you partner begins to do so, take a page from their book by perceiving and fulfilling your significant other’s needs yourself. Not only does this show how thoughtful you are, but it will help you to feel more productive and active in the relationship. 

When your “giver” begins to lose his or her self in the personalities of others, do something to remind them of who they are. A well-versed love note is a wonderful way to remind your partner of why you care for them and can shake them out of any “chameleon personality funk” they  might fall into.

Tips for Dating an INFJ Personality

A prospective partner needs to understand the INFJ’s need to take it slowly when revealing their inner self. It can be difficult to be around someone who so easily seems to understand you, especially when they give so little back in the way of opening up. Patience and an appreciation for your INFJ’s passionate and enthusiastic nature will go a long way in the relationship.

Eventually you will crack the stubborn shell of your “protector” and get to know the creative, sensitive, and compassionate soul that lies beneath. 

You will find that your INFJ partner has high expectations of you. For the most part, these will be reasonable expectations but don’t be afraid to speak up if you begin to feel that your partner is laying the pressure on too thickly.

If you begin to feel overwhelmed with your significant other’s need to seek control, take the chance to gently remind your partner that you deserve to have your opinions and thoughts heard. 

Ultimately, don’t take your partner’s feelings about you lightly; if they are willing to stick around then you should know that they genuinely care for you and will eventually let you through each layer of their being.

Your INFJ partner easily picks up on the moods of others around them and often seeks a way to make everyone happy. This can be exhausting for your companion, so respect their inevitable need to “recharge” after a social situation. 

Some quiet time at home will usually do the trick. Although your partner may appear to be a social butterfly, remember that at heart he or she will struggle to divulge their own feelings to others, even your friends; so don’t be too upset if your partner doesn’t instantly open up to your pals. 

Also, too much spontaneity and impulsiveness can send up a red flag to your partner, making it difficult for them to view you as a stable, long-term partner. Ultimately, this may lead to an inadvertent relationship sabotage.

Tips for Dating an ENFP Personality

In order to be a good prospect for the ENFP, you need to be capable of going with the flow. Rigidity and strictness, especially in your schedule, will make your partner feel stifled which can inevitably cause the relationship to fail. 

Be prepared to travel, try new hobbies, and amaze your partner with thoughtful acts that will take them by surprise. 

Your efforts will keep your partner on their toes which is exactly the kind of lifestyle that the “inspirer” craves! It doesn’t always have to be dramatic, but try to keep things fun. Your partner will thank you by meeting or exceeding your efforts in order to see to your happiness, too.

ENFPs are excellent conversationalists blessed with the ability to talk, gauge a person’s reaction, and carry on in just the right direction to hold their audience’s attention and interest.

 Being able to react and contribute to such conversations will impress an “inspirer.” Your partner has a knack for expressing his or her self very well and you should be able to listen attentively 

Give your honest input whenever necessary – but keep it gentle, as this kind of persona is very sensitive and struggles to take criticism without suffering a serious emotional blow.

Tips for Dating an INFP Personality

Your INFP partner has a desire to keep things interesting and in order for this to happen you will have to be willing to slacken the reins and allow your partner to keep things interesting in his or her own way. In addition to this, you will also need to throw your own effort into trying new things, suggesting new activities, bringing home an occasional surprise, and also picking up the slack in everyday activities that are too mundane for your partner to complete all the time.

Contrary to your INFP’s perfectionist tendencies, you may find that he or she has trouble keeping their personal space clean. This could be a car, hobby room, bedroom, or even an entire house – basically any space that serves as their “private place” where they can completely unwind and recharge after social activity. Don’t be too pushy regarding this area as your partner may feel you are trying to trespass into an area that is very special to them.

Remember that your partner’s inner self contains many layers. You will have to show gentility and patience in order to access a new layer and in most cases it will be a lengthy process. Don’t expect to know all of the ins and outs of your partner overnight. Prying will only cause your partner to clam up even tighter. 

INFPs are often much more capable at expressing themselves through the written word. If you have trouble getting your significant other to open up, consider asking if he or she would be willing to write letters or create a journal to which you are granted access.

How Se is described: The present. Experiencing the now. Aesthetics.

People I know who uses dominant Se: Can’t sit still when talking without them moving so much. Loves P.E even if some are not good at it. “I fucking dare you!”. The most energetic one in the group. “You know I might have ADHD”. They may not look like it but they know more than you think. It’s boring when they’re not around.

How Ne is described: New ideas. Possibilities. What if.

People I know who uses dominant Ne: Would run up to you only to ask “Okay imagine this. What if [insert something stupid]”. Suddenly laughs when the whole room was quiet. A lot would tell them they need medication. The jokester in the group. Sucks at story telling. Has tons of crushes. Innuendos. Curses a lot. It’s fucking true.

How Si is described: Vivid memory. Concrete facts. Traditional.

People I know who uses dominant Si: Loves telling stories about what they did when they were little. Always suspicious. Everytime I go out with them in some place they would always run into someone they know, made me believe that they have so many friends. Acts like a know it all. They can be very patient when they’re in a good mood.

How Ni is described: The big picture. Future vision. Organize things into one answer.

Okay guys, just hear me out I was in chess club in sixth grade

The King (ENFP): Without the king, chess wouldn’t exactly be a very fun game…i mean, there wouldn’t be anything to protect….but skill wise, the king definitely shows some inferior Si. It lacks skill, however it’s ability to go in multiple directions lends well to dominant Ne.Specifically ENFP, since it’s such a valuable piece that can cause some damage if need be (Fi-Te) but really ONLY if need be. It’s your classic case of too many options, no execution.

The Queen (ESTP): Indisputably the most valuable piece on the board, she can go every direction, fuckin annihilate p much any piece on the hecking board…..i.e. skilled Se-Ti versatility, and tertiary Fe that literally gets her everywhere…..she meshes with the social environment, because she could realistically be anywhere on the board at any time….the problem is with reckless playing, you could lose her, and probably the game (inf. Ni much?)

Left Bishop (ESFJ): after the initial movement of some pawns, this is typically the first piece you move It’s a sort of social experiment, initially, and if left bishop doesn’t get taken down within the first few minutes, it becomes a very strategically important piece in the game.  Fe-Si sparks its initial motives, the social stir-up and cordial defense of the queen, but it’s surprise to the opponent later in the game is such a tertiary Ne kick to the face ((but a polite….passive aggressive one u know? like srry :) I had to :) fucking savage))

Right Bishop (INFJ): typically laying low until it’s entirely necessary, this piece is sometimes forgotten about and becomes an obstacle for your king to trip over (Inferior Se?) and once it gets itself moving it’s rather clumsy. Initially staying out of the drama (Ni-Fe) until the later half of the game, it tends to last longer than it probably can manage, running only on Ti-Se fumes. 

Left Knight (ENTJ): this guy’s in it for the Te-Ni longevity. You’re not going to lose left knight (unless your as terrible of a chess player as i am). It’s quite unpredictable (tertiary Se), which makes it incredibly valuable. It’s a pretty eager piece too, usually charges into the mayhem around the same time as left bishop, but typically lasts a bit longer, since it’s pathways are less predictable and more reckless. (So like Te-Se loop ENTJ) 

Right Knight (ISTP): much more sagely than the right night but still a fucking badass, and it’s surprising Ti strategy become’s it’s most important tool in potentially winning you the game. It’s got it’s Se-Ni under a very tight reign and is probably going to last longer than the left, since it enters the game later. A piece to be used wisely, since it has to potential to be extremely chaotic. 

Left Rook (ESTJ): This piece is almost as important as the queen when it comes to taking out the opponent. It’s Te-Si eagerness and irreplaceability combined with its erratic tertiary Ne battle tendencies give it the potential to wipe out half of the board. In comparison to ENTJ (Left Knight) it’s has Si patience. It causes less chaos and more destruction, but could get eliminated earlier in the game because of this. 

Right Rook (ENFJ): your right hand man (quite literally lol)….often tends to go unnoticed within the first few moves, but is a lifesaver nearing the end of the game. It’s incredibly dependable, almost to the point that it’s an obstacle. It’s usual purpose is to protect the king (Fe) and it tends to last the majority of the game (Ni-Se). However, it’s overbearing tendencies are its downfall. 

Left Pawn (INFP): This guy’s non-confrontational Fi ways tend to keep him in the same place for the majority of the game, just minding his own business. However, when it comes down to fighting, he becomes quite stubborn (as common for tertiary Si users) and becomes possibly the best obstacle for those attacking the king.

Pawn Second to the Left (INTJ): Like INFP, this one tends to observe (Ni) gameplay for the majority, but will take a offensive stance if need be (aux Te) however, this is often only if necessary, since sharing left bishop’s inferior Se, Second Pawn tends to have difficulty actually managing the second half of the game (which it usually makes it to)

Third Pawn to the Left (ISFP): although less eager to charge into the battle field than some of the other pieces (High Fi being non-confrontational), this pawn is often less dormant than the previously mentioned ones, it closely follows the center pawns and can skillfully (Se-Ni) take down its opponent’s pieces (usually pawns). It’s competitive streak shows early in the game.

Left center pawn (ESFP): one of the first pieces moved as well as one of the first pieces to go, it’s dominant Se enthusiasm makes a bold entrance, as well as a bold ending statement. It’s sacrifice is indicative of lower Te-Ni planning, but it goes valiantly for it’s cause, and is arguably the piece that gets things going as the first one lost.

Right center pawn (ISTJ): also potentially the first to move it’s Si-Te strategy is that of a player’s that knows what it has to do to start the game. It can take the offensive (Te) but could also be one of the first sacrificed, which is why many have second thoughts about moving this piece first. (Inf. Ne.) 

Third Pawn to the Right (INTP): this is one of the pawns you are advised not to move first since it could lead the opponent to taking you down in two moves. With dominant Ti, this pawn is often rational enough to heed this warning and stay put, likely to become another tertiary Si obstacle for the opponent. 

Second Pawn to the Right (ENTP): This one is a No-go. Do not move this piece first or you’re dead. But like most high Ne users, ENTP does not listen and moves, foolishly, too soon. It’s low sensing functions does not make it the most valuable player, often leading it to get in the way of your other pieces.
