A Wagtail Feathursday

This week we present two wagtails: the Grey Wagtail (Motacilla cinerea) and the Pied or White Wagtail (Motacilla alba). Both are closely associated with water as depicted in these images: a color lithograph by the noted British naturalist artist and illustrator Charles Tunnicliffe (1901-1979) from his book Bird Portraiture (“How To Do It” Series No. 35), published in London and New York by The Studio in 1945; a wood engraving by British author and wood engraver Eric Fitch Daglish (1892-1966) from his book Birds of the British Isles, published in London by J. M. Dent & Sons in 1948 in a limited edition of 1500 copies, with 23 black and white and 25 hand-colored wood engravings by Daglish. Both are donations to UWM Special Collections from our friend Tony Drehfal.

And, why are they called wagtails? Because that's what they famously do.
