For rebuttal, the shippers and especially the fanfiction authors give zero hecks about what's going on between any character's legs in your comic.
The EGS fandom consensus is that they're a tumbleweed. A big ol' fuck pile, if you will.
I agree that El Goonish Shive fans are, in my experience, much better than most about treating non-m/m ships seriously, and shipping wars in general are pretty much absent. The "everyone is just in one giant polycule, and I happen to be focusing on a few specific characters at a time" attitude is something a lot of other fandoms could stand to pick up.
But all I meant by the last tag was just that it's a deliberate part of the joke that Tedd forgets she's currently presenting feminine and casually says she's in a same-sex friendship with Elliot while he's currently presenting masculine.
