i still think about the girl who drew a smiley face on my shoulder in my first year of college, the man in the grocery store who said i had sad eyes, the woman in church who told me i had beautiful eyes, the group members who showed us their pet birds while we were supposed to be editing each other’s stories over a video call, the way a classmate’s voice went all soft and shy when i told him i liked the painting in the back of his bedroom, the boy who smiled and wished me luck when he saw me waiting outside the office of the job we were both interviewing for, the waitress who gave me a stuffed toy as a thanks for being a nice customer, the boy in the library i made amused eye contact with when the security guard berated him for bringing food inside, the store owner near my house who always called me “my dear” and remembered that i always bought the cappuccino flavoured ice cream. even if you are a passerby in somebody’s life, you will be remembered one way or another.

some of you need to make your bed and have a shower with a soap that smells nice, and then sit in a chair near the window and have tea with milk and read a hardcover book and see how your creative block is after that tbh.

i’m not saying creative block isn’t a real or difficult phenomenon. i’m saying creatives have a tendency to neglect themselves physically and emotionally in favor of manic bursts of productivity. a little softness and clean sheets and a bagel will go a long way. make a playlist and light the fancy candle you’ve been saving for a special occasion. life is a special occasion.
