Simon Pryce & Ana Marina, POTO Australian Tour 2008
Simon Pryce is a Phantom that had to grow on me. He understudied Anthony Warlow, who is one of the more volatile Phantoms and yet I think Pryce's Rik is at his core a gentle giant. He carries his big frame with the awareness that between his face and his towering size could easily frighten Christine away.
This week's stream is another all time fan favorite, featuring John Cudia wielding his Red Death cape like a wet towel in a locker room. Also a former Christine (on the same tour in fact), Kimilee Bryant, following the Christine to Carlotta pipeline with her appearance as Carlotta in this performance. And, of course, Jackhammer Meg!
Each week I try to post a bit about where each production we stream fits in time, in space (location) and in Phantom history. In the eight streams I have hosted so far, we have stuck firmly to the 2000's, and our locations have been London, Broadway, Copenhagen, France, China (current World Tour stops), various US city stops on past US tours, and actual Hell (Spiritual Twist). With the exception of Spiritual Twist (the only way in which that production is exceptional) all the versions we have watched since June 13, 2026 have been versions of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
London/West End: In ALW Phantom history, we are presently in the 40th anniversary year of this iteration of Phantom of the Opera, which had its first preview September 27, 1986 at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, England. The official opening night at Her Majesty's was October 8, 1986.
New York/Broadway: First preview on Broadway was on January 9, 1988, with an official premiere date of January 26, 1988.
With both the London and Broadway shows running, a series of tours was launched. This stream note discusses what are referred to as the US National Tours (although I am still not certain if there may have been a few Canadian stops here and there, still trying to find this out.)
First US National Tour: Christine Tour or Christine Company. Launched May 18, 1989. Final Performance January 3, 1999. Although billed as a national tour, it played in two cities only, Los Angeles and San Francisco. 3,092 performances. Replica of original staging.
Second National Tour: Raoul Tour or Raoul Company. Launched May 22, 1990. Final Performance November 15, 1998. Played major markets for a total of 3,364 performances. Replica of original staging.
Third National Tour: Music Box Tour or Music Box Company. Launched December 13, 1992. Final Performance October 31, 2010. Played major markets for a total of 7,284 performances. Replica of original staging.
This whole post started with attempting to answer the question of why the Third National Tour was called the Music Box Tour. In an article from the LA Times, July 22, 1994, "O.C. Theater: 'Phantom' Flexes Its Muscles" by Jan Herman, I find an answer:
You know the show that opens Sunday for a six-week stand at the Orange County Performing Arts Center as âThe Phantom of the Opera.â But the troupe for this national touring production thinks of itself as âThe Music Box Company.â
The name, chosen by producer Cameron Macintosh [sic], suggests a delicate object tinged with nostalgia and romance. It refers to one of the most evocative elements in Andrew Lloyd Webberâs pop opera: the Phantomâs papier-mache music box with its little monkey on top and âMasquerade,â its haunting little tune, inside.
The box becomes a poignant symbol of the disfigured Phantomâs obsessive love for the beautiful young opera singer Christine, who is torn between him and the handsome Viscount Raoul de Chagny. The reason for the company name, however, is more practical than poetic.
According to Bill Miller, a spokesman for the show, Macintosh [sic] wanted to distinguish this production from his two other road versions now playing in the United States. The âPhantomâ in San Francisco, which opened last Christmas after running for 4 1/2 years at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, is called âThe Christine Company.â The âPhantomâ in Boston, on a 19-city tour that began 4 1/2 years ago in Chicago, is âThe Raoul Company.â
(Still not sure why the first two tours were named Christine and Raoul though!)
Fourth National Tour: Commonly referred to as the Restaged Tour. Launched November 27, 2013. Final performance February 2, 2020. Played major markets, including at least one stop in Canada (Toronto). I was unable to locate the total performances number for this tour. It is called the Restaged because it is not an exact replica of the original London/Broadway staging. More forthcoming on this tour and staging.
Fifth National Tour: The Box Five Tour or Box Five Company. Launched November 7, 2025. Currently ongoing. Called on the official site a North American Tour, but has not as yet played any cities outside of the US. Celebrated 300 performances August 6, 2026. West End (London) Revival staging. More forthcoming on this tour and staging.
And there you have a brief history of US Tours of Phantom, in preparation for watching a performance this Saturday from the Third US Tour as performed by (say it with me) the Music Box Company!

When your antidepressants are working so you like actually have motivation to explore your other interests/hobbies again and not rely on your Phantom special interest for the addictive dopamine rush but then you also have fomo because you're not in the server or on tumblr as much and you feel bad because you're not contributing to the community and don't want to abandon people but then you're told that exactly how fandom works so it's like you love not being depressed but also the life balance of not being depressed feels like it kinda took something from you a wee bit.....
When we un-packed it, the Paris curator was embarrassed to discover lipstick marks on its cheek: someone in the Louvre had played at being Pygmalionâor Hadrianâand kissed it. And who could blame them?
Up on a pedestal, center stage, the effect of its beauty was jaw-dropping.
It felt fitting to post another Masquerade-inspired piece today (Masquerade art renaissance!!!), given that it's the show's one-year anniversary and Hugh will be leaving us again this Sunday (for now đ¤).
Seeing Georgia and Hugh together, surrounded by so many phandom friends, was such a surreal experience. I still remember all of us stumbling out of the show after that emotionally devastating Final Lairâ either crying or fanning ourselves with our programmes, trying to process what we'd just witnessed.
Georgiaâs Christine had a maturity and emotional depth that completely surprised me, and it created such a fascinating dynamic with Hughâs Phantom, who felt so deeply stunted by his childhood trauma. And that Final Lair... I honestly don't know if I have the words. Everything felt impossibly fast and impossibly slow at the same time: the way Georgia held onto Hugh as they rested their foreheads together, the way he grasped her hand so tightly in his before slowly pulling it away. I've rarely, if ever, cried at a show beforeâ but I did that day.
I genuinely can't believe it's already been a whole year since Masquerade NYC opened in New York. I still remember sitting in an office during my internship, dreaming about seeing the show someday. A year later, l've seen Masquerade three times, each with a different Phantom and Christine pairing, and every visit has given me something new to love.

Some of my favorite moments from yesterday's stream. Mostly involving TMG's hands, bc they're beautiful. TMG has the secret sauce that just makes me cry without being able to put my finger on why. Maybe because there's a softness/innocence to him; his Phantom never wanted to be as angry as he is.

Don't ask me why I'm thinking about this right now (nonreplica palate cleanser I guess), but I just realized that the way Gleason embraces Christine here is so important because this is the same boot where Erik constantly hugs himself as a self-soothing stim. And so of course he throws his arms around her like that. This is probably the first time someone else is holding him--the first time he goes to wrap his arms around himself and finds someone already there.

This week's stream is very special, featuring two productions with clips never before shown on Saturday Streams!
PARIS 2016
First up is something rare and unusual--clips from the sitzprobe for the never realized Paris production. The following summary of the history of the Paris production--as well as the clips themselves--are provided by @glassprism:
The Paris production was set to open in October 2016 at the Mogador Theatre and to play until sometime in 2017, coinciding with Phantom's 30th anniversary, Unfortunately a fire broke out about a week before the production was going to open and burned away the floor and some of the sets and equipment. Rebuilding everything would have pushed Phantom's opening into the next year, and as the theater already had a number of shows lined up already, it was decided to cancel Phantom rather than move all the other productions back.
Our Paris cast is GarĂ°ar ThĂłr Cortes as the Phantom, Sierra Boggess as Christine and Bastien Jacquemart as Raoul. The production libretto is in French--so a first chance to hear a stage Phantom sing and speak in his native language!
The sitzprobe footage we will see is predominantly composed of the cast standing in front of microphones and performing in street clothes (sadly no costumesâŚ)
The picture below is from Sierra Boggess' Instagram circa 2016, and shows a dress rehearsal of the Paris production, taken the day before the fire.
WORLD TOUR 2025/2026
The second act of the stream will be Hi-Def Harry Mills clips from the current World Tour. The clips are from three different shows, and feature three different Christines.
The first clip is MOTN from 2025, with Grace Roberts as Christine.
The second clip is Final Lair from 2025, with Caitlin Finnie as Christine and Rory McCollum as Raoul.
The third clip is Final Lair from 2025, with Grace Roberts as Christine and Rory McCollum as Raoul.
The fourth and final clip is a complete Act Two from 2026, with Kayleigh Marven as Christine and Rory McCollum as Raoul.
So a bountiful beneath a moonless sky amount of Final Lairs (again and then again...) featuring fan favorite Harry Mills as the Phantom and three lovely Christines!Â
The clips vary in quality; some close-ups get a bit blurry and some clips feature static or moving watermarks.
