on one hand I get "playing to your outs", but on the other hand if your "out" is gonna involve an extra 5+ minutes of sitting there for it to obviously not work in the end anyway, you could just know, skip that?

i just sat there in a singles match with my mega meganium vs a bellibolt which switched in on a solar beam that did ~49% and it was slower than me. i hit it again with solar beam and got it down to ~4% and proceeded to use slack off. for eight turns in a row. every single PP. yes they had leftovers so they were technically gaining ground by doing that but solar beam has more PP than slack off, they had no move that could KO me, were never gonna successfully get multiple off, like this was all pretty clear if you can do basic arithmetic, and yet. we sat there for 8 whole slack offs.

made it into Master Ball 3 last night with my hoenn only team (higher than I ever got last season) but quickly dropped back out again… still this is a surprising vote of confidence in that team

#the sneasler thing in hindsight i can understand as niche tech #but this person who set up trick room next to their raichu Y i think was just very confused #like not only is that just crippling their mega for no reason #I HAVE A MEGA CAMERUPT ON MY TEAM #they handed me an advantage for zero reason #idk why i'm seeing this A TON in the ultra ball trenches the past couple days #sometimes it's a hard TR team and i just let them set it for me which at least makes sense #but i'm also seeing cases of other ppl setting TR when it benefits me more than them #or also other ppl setting tailwind when they don't need it AT ALL to outspeed my team #speed control is important but some ppl just be clicking it without thinking about what's on the field/in the back #pokemon sp #pokemon champions diaries

me watching all the kerfuffle over the brand new sun + rain team that dominated that big VGC tournament this weekend with everyone gushing about how scary and innovative it is when i was playing that sun + rain shit last season on ladder

smh these "tournament winners" aren't even smart enough to include the obvious star of the dual weather team, CASTFORM

it's so sad when you make a really cool play that would be an epic swag way to win a battle but tragically it is not enough to win you the battle because you made some mistakes earlier lol

#i had a moment where some braincells really connected #i have destiny bond on my gardevoir currently #i used it on a turn thinking opponent's mega t-tar (slower than gard) would kill it but it didnt target that slot that turn #and destiny bond stays active UNTIL you use another move #so. the next turn. i clicked TRICK ROOM #(negative priority)#to make sure the slower ttar would hit gard and trigger destiny bond before gard moved #alas i had made some bad choices on targeting earlier in the battle and was just barely too far behind for that swing to save me #but it felt good #pokemon champions diaries #pokemon sp

ok i'm starting to have fun with my weird suboptimal hoenn team, even if it's only against people who are decidedly Bad players in low ranks

very funny situation that just happened:

i open with gardevoir and sableye, opponent sends out farigiraf and raichu. seeing this (plus the rest of their team being hard trick room) i guess that perhaps it's a support raichu to enable the TR to go up. which i'm ok with, cuz i have camerupt in the back. but I decide to double the farig just to get some damage on it this turn

BY THE WAY, Gardevoir traced Lightning rod. this was announced. both of us could see it.

well not looking at the screen is a helluva drug because the raichu mega evolved and used Zap Cannon, which gave gardevoir a sp. atk boost, and meant that I killed the farig before it could move.

but why stop there. why stop there?!?! i had encore on sableye.

i wish i could tell you the other player was smart enough to switch out after being encored and getting my gardevoir to +2, but they DID NOT.

didn't expect to sweep with my focus sash trick room setting gardevoir but here we are

suddenly got an urge to make a full hoenn team for doubles ladder this season in champions. And. I might follow thru on it. But even my castform professor ass is honestly grimacing looking at the options which are all BELOVED MONS TO ME but … not all the best options for a competent vgc team together. Like. Many of them CAN be good but the fact that most of the hoenn mons included in the current batch are the mega capable ones means it’s a little hard to make a balanced team of 6 when they can’t all be mega. But. I might try it!

threw together a really poorly thought out version of a hoenn-only team from mons i had available

proceeded to get from pokeball tier to great ball tier in doubles ladder without winning even one game against a real human (apparently with the "performance bonus" from being master ball last season, alternating WLWL against the bots is enough to promote you)

then proceeded to get from great ball to ultra ball without LOSING a single game to a human.

i have no idea what's going on

#i did encounter some bullshit in the pokeball tier fights #a couple people cooking crazy things like that trick room sneasler #also one fight i would've won if not for rather poor luck (not to be that guy)#lost a speed tie TWICE to get rock slide flinched on my sweeper TWICE (double flinch on the first turn too)#but yknow those happen #and then these great ball battles were some wierd stuff with ppl not playing that well #my team is NOT good i cannot stress that enough #i have fuckin gardevoir as a trick room setter #chimecho and camerupt as megas #and a special speed boost blaziken in the back in case i dont wanna TR #(special blaziken has no logic behind it other than 'teehee that's not the usual set!')#(and very vaguely to make me less vulnerable to intim)#(but I know it's less power overall)#(we might change it later)#pokemon sp #pokemon champions diaries

The summer between the end of high school and the start of college, I wrote a ridiculous play about pirates and put on a staged reading with some friends at an amphitheatre at a local park before a small audience of friends and family. It was never published or staged again. But I just got a message from an old high school friend I haven’t seen in years. He accidentally quoted the play in a conversation with friends, was asked what he was quoting, he couldn’t remember either, and wracked his brain until he finally remembered it was that silly play reading that we did one day in the park over 10 years ago. It made me happy. (The line was, “Huzzah for mercantilism!” by the way.)

A very tiny percentage of creators go on to be famous, but that doesn’t mean that people don’t remember little things you did for years and years. Who came up with most of the world’s most famous jump rope rhymes? Who coined some of the famous idioms we use in daily speech? Who made up ‘Jingle Bells, Batman Smells?” Somehow, all of these things stuck and spread around.

When I was a small child, I saw a high school put on a production of the musical HONK. In one song, the mother duck describes various dangers that her baby should avoid in the water, including fishing line, which could strangle him. A member of the ensemble played the role of fishing line, doing a maniacal laugh and over-the-top strangling motions, and I found it hilarious– and to this day, that’s an example I often think of when talking about how ensemble members can still stand out in theatre. The guy who played the role might not even remember that he did that, but I do.

I took Suzuki violin lessons as a kid. The teacher made up lyrics to some of the songs, and she let her students make some up, too. Now whenever I hear the instrumental of one of those pieces, I always remember these ridiculous lyrics about a skunk that we sang in violin class. I don’t even know which student invented them!

In middle school, I found a video about atoms parodying Bill Nye made by some kids for a school product. It probably had less than 1,000 views, but I think of quotes from that video all the time. They had a parody of “We Will Rock You” with the chorus, “Protons, neutrons, electrons” that I think about a lot.

I just love that this is part of human life. Our memories don’t just pick up quotes from great art, literature, and music, but little things, too.
