“  i’m  starting  to  think  you  only  keep  me  around  for  food  errands  .  ”  accusation  lacks  any  real  bite  when  paired  with  the  amused  exhale  that  follows  .  at  the  mention  of  strawberry  cheesecake  ,  however , blue  eyes  finally  meet  brown  .  contemplation  settles  across  elder  features  ,  and  he  gives  in  only  a  couple  seconds  later  .  “  alright  ,  that  does  sound  quite  nice  ...  but  is  it  really  worth  fighting  off  a  crowd  for  ?  ”

"I'm not expecting anyone if you would like to join me."

sleep  had  abandoned  him  somewhere  around  four  in  the  morning  .  after  an  hour  of  staring  at  the  ceiling  and  another  letting  thoughts  race  around  his  head  ,  max  had  ended  up  here  purely  to  exist  somewhere  that  wasn’t  home  .  baseball  cap  sits  low  over  tired  hues  as  gaze  drifts  around  the  crowded  cafe  before  her  voice  cuts  through  .  “  you  sure  ?  ”  without  waiting  too  long  for  the  offer  to  be  reconsidered  ,  maddox  slides  into  the  empty  chair  opposite  .  “  thank  you  .  everybody  seemed  to  have  the  same  idea  as  us  .  ”

“  careful,  i  might  come  more  often  than  you'd  like.  ”  mila  admitted  as  she  turned  to  look  at  max.  a  soft  laugh  escapes  her  lips  as  she  turns  to  glance  at  the  puppy  for  just  a  split  second.  “  i  couldn't  tell  he's  chaotic.  ”  she  teases  lightly.  “  but  in  all  seriousness  –  have  you  thought  of  getting  him  a  trainer  ?  ”  she  questions.  she  knew  nothing  about  training  a  dog,  but  she  had  assumed  he  had  someone  helping  him.  “  i  know.  but  i'm  not  burnt  out.  that's  why  i  do  pilates.  ”  she  smiled,  but  the  more  she  said  it,  the  less  believable  it  sounded.  mila  was  burnt  out,  but  she  would  never  admit  it.  simply  because  she  didn't  know  anything  other  than  ballet.  “  well,  we  have  the  classical  –  swan  lake.  which  i'd  be  surprised  if  you  didn't  know.  ”  mila  said  as  she  looked  at  the  other,  in  a  rather  intimidating  way.  “  we  also  have  onegin,  don  quixote  and  sylvia.  let  me  know  which  one  you  want  to  see  and  i'll  take  care  of  it.  ” 

brunette's  attention  drifts  back  to  mila  just  in  time  to  catch  the  shift  .  it’s  subtle  ,  yet  noticable  to  the  maddox  .  brow  lifts  ,  slow  .  not  calling  it  out  but  just  letting  it  sit  .  “  mhm  .  pilates  fixes  everything  ?  ”  a  jab  more  than  anything  .  light  enough  to  pass  as  teasing  .  then  she  mentions  the  shows  .  hand  comes  to  his  chest  like  she’s  genuinely  offended  him  ,  like  she’s  struck  a  personal  blow  to  his  entire  sense  of  identity  .  “  wow  .  i  am  cultured  ,  y'know  .  ”  a  scoff  ,  and  a  smirk  curls  dangerously  at  the  corner  of  his  lips  .  “  admittedly  …  the  others  ,  i  have  no  clue  .  but  pick  the  one  you’re  most  excited  about  .  that’s  the  one  i’ll  come  see  .  ”

" the  next  appointment  will  be  in  two  weeks.  that's  when  we'll  get  the  first  proper  scan  . "

when  max  pulls  back  ,  rough  hands  cradle  her  face  with  such  care  that  condricts  the  tremor  and  eyes  bore  into  her's  with  a  new  found  resolve  .  “  ohhh  ,  you  will  rest  .  ”  quiet  chuckle  slips  through  ,  head  nodding  as  if  to  force  her  to  do  the  same  .  “  try  me  .  everything  ,  anything  you  need  ...  i'll  handle  it  .  ”  thumb  brushes  slow  over  the  side  of  her  face  ,  already  thinking  of  ways  he'll  make  it  happen  .  “  every  scan  —  every  fortnight  ,  every  week  ,  i  don't  fucking  care  .  i'm  there  .  ”

laurie looks up at the footsteps beside their table, flipping its notebook closed and pulling it out of the way to make space for their guest. the other goes to speak, and laurie holds up a hand. “ give me a sec, ” they say, downing the last of their coffee before setting the cup down. “ okay, i'm all ears. what's got you looking like someone hid vegemite in your chocolate ? ”

“  is  that  your  way  of  saying  i've  got  a  scowl  on  my  face  ?  ”  there's  faint  accusation  in  the  question  ,  though  singular  brow  arches  as  if  to  insinuate  underlying  humour  .  hand  curls  around  the  back  of  the  chair  before  he  finally  drops  into  it  ,  posture  a  tad  heavier  than  usual  .  like  sitting  down  alone  has  shaved  a  fraction  of  whatever  weight's  been  riding  his  shoulders  .  “  as  long  as  i  don't  look  like  my  father  ,  we're  good  .  ”  dig  at  his  patriarch  comes  easily  ,  possibly  too  easy  to  pass  as  a  joke  yet  retiree  doesn't  let  it  linger  .  instead  ,  attention  drifts  briefly  toward  the  abandoned  notebook  then  settling  back  to  the  other  once  more  .  “  whatcha  working  on  ?  ”

 ❝   it's  fine.  business  comes  first  and  all  that.   ❞   lexie  excuses  without  thought,  pulling  her  knees  up  to  her  chest  as  she  draws  plush pink blanket  tighter  around  her.  business  has  always  come  first  —  except,  it  never  has  with  them.  he's  always  been  good  at  that.  being  around  max  is  like  being  a  little  girl  again.  or,  rather,  it's  one  of  the  only  times  she's  ever  been  allowed  to  be  just  a  girl.  she's  always  thought  herself  lucky  to  have  him  -  the  olsen  twins  had  their  dad,  and  she  has  him.  ❝   we  were  picking  a  movie.  your  choice,  seeing  as  you  brought  the  snacks.  but  only  if  you  brought  me  my  favourite.   ❞

a  noise  of  pure  disapproval  escapes  ,  nose  scrunching  alongside  the  furrow  of  his  brow  .  business  comes  first  ,  my  ass  .  he’s  seen  what  that  thinking  turns  into  .  watched  it  pick  away  pieces  of  his  life  …  almost  losing  his  marriage  …  never  again  .  “  hey  …  c’mon  .  ”  tone  softens  instinctively  ,  like  he’s  smoothing  it  over  without  letting  it  become  a  thing  .  “  as  if  i  wouldn’t  bring  your  favourite  .  one  grey  hair  extraction  and  suddenly  i’m  slipping  ?  rude  .  ”  corners  of  his  lips  tug  upward  despite  himself  ,  fondess  settling into fine lines  .  like  no  matter  how  old  she  gets  ,  part  of  him  still  sees  the  little  girl  who  used  to  trail  after  him  .  brunette  drops  beside  her  with  a  grunt  ,  snack  bag  landing  in  her  lap  atop  pink  blanket  .  “  so  ,  shitty  horror  movie  …  or  mrs  doubtfire  ?  ”

being  from  a  family  of  rather  busy  people,  mila  tried  to  make  as  much  time  as  she  could  to  hang  out  with  any  of  her  family  members.  yet,  it  seems  like  as  of  late,  that  wasn't  really  the  case.  so  when  she  found  time  to  see  max,  she  was  rather  thrilled.  “  i  wish  i  had  the  time  to  get  one,  honestly.  ”  the  younger  maddox  admitted  as  she  looked  at  marlo.  “  i  am  getting  ready  to  perform  this  summer.  we  have  so  many  upcoming  shows,  and  i'm  obviously  not  dancing  in  all  of  them,  although  i  wish  i  did.  ”  a  soft  chuckle  escapes  her  lips.  it  might  sound  like  a  joke  to  most,  but  in  reality,  mila  did  wish  she  could  do  more  than  two  shows  a  season.

“  you’re  more  than  welcome  to  puppysit  at  any  time  .  ”  a  faintly  mischievous  glance  lands  on  mila  .  “  though  i  should  warn  you  …  he  has  a  talent  for  chaos  .  ”  an  understatement  .  he’s  lost  count  how  many  times  the  little  rascal  has  bolted  after  the  cat  around  their  place  or  sent  something  of  vita’s  swaying  off  a  surface  in  a  burst  of  excitement  .  expression  softens  as  max  takes  in  her  update  ,  pride  and  admiration  shining  in  blue  hues  .  “  you  do  realise  there’s  this  thing  called  burnout  ,  right  ?  they  probably  don’t  want  that  happening  to  you  .  ”  it  isn't  scolding  .  more  like  familiarity  slipping  through  his  tone  from  knowing  what  its  like  to  love  something  enough  to  forget  your  own  limits  .  “  what’re  the  shows  ?  i'd  be  happy  to  be  the  very  supportive  audience  member  …  even  if  i  may  not  fully  get  it  .  ”
