"    vegemite  with  chocolate  doesn't  sound  all  that  bad  now  that  you  mention  it  and  —    "  dryly  amused,  her  lips  curve  at  the  notion  of  dessert,  leaving  her  assailed  by  an  immaculate  yet  overwhelming  urge  to  eat.  the  rest  would  have  to  wait. be delegated.  "    i  think  i'm  just  hungry.  i  definitely  should've  eaten  something  before  coming.  "  it's  not  an  oversight  on  her  part ,  per  se.  she  had  breakfast. something sweet , too . but  it's  nearly  time  for  lunch now.  "  do  they  sell  here  anything  other  than  coffee?  "

despite having barely a moment to breathe, jules' smile hadn't faltered. hostess abilities well refined. beloved gala was a testament to months of work, and the reason all other events left competing to be her second favorite. following a warm albeit careful embrace, dress her prized jewel of the eve, she bid adieu to former companion and turned.  ❝ there you are. ❞   an extra wave of warmth washed over her expression.  ❝ i heard you made quite the impression on the red carpet. ❞

if  one  were  to  look  at  vita,  they'd  spot  in  her  arms  one  unicorn,  a  tad  too  colorful,  two  dragons,  and  one  bear  soon  to  be  dressed  in  chainmail  armor,  all  obtained  upon  impulse,  lacking  any  logical  reasoning.  admittedly  she  doesn't  need  another  one.  no,  pause,  of  course  she  does.  "  maybe,  but  i've  already  picked  at  least  four.  two  for  my  siblings,  one  for  my  cousin's  son,  and  one  for  my  ...  "  she  falls  silent then ,  realizing  what  she  was  about  to  say.  " so  it's  not  really  fair  that  i  take  it.  i  just  don't  know  how  this  whole  thing  works.  "

"  oh  my  god  ,  "  she  turns,  mouth  agape,  barely  acknowledging  the  notion  of  how  bad  it  may  look  to  laugh  so  freely, as if she's forgotten that they're not alone. "  i  don't  think  that  i  should  be  laughing.  it's  not  really  fair  to  that  poor  girl.  "  in  sharp  contract  to  her  own  amusement,  to combat the sudden pang of guilt , she  tosses  a  question  instead,  leaning  closer,  close  enough  to  almost  rest  her  weary  head  on  her  sister's  shoulder.  "  did  anyone  try  to  help  her  at  least?  " 

“   yeah   ,   baby   ?   ”   voice   floats   through   the   familiar   space   at   the   echo   of   his   name   ,   pulling   his   attention   like   a   call   of   a   siren   from   the   tedious   rhythm   of   folding   laundry   .   head   turns   toward   her   ,   bodying   following   suit   even   as   fingers   idly   play   with   the   soft   fabric   of   the   cotton   shirt   in   his   hand   .   all   before   setting   it   carefully   in   the   basket   .   “   hey   …   ”   single   word   dangles   in   the   fleeting   moment   of   silence   she   creates   ,   and   it's   enough   to   have   a   certain   unease   stirring   in   the   pit   of   max's   gut   .   nothing   is   given   away   save   for   the   pale   hint   in   her   complexion   ,   and   those   four   words   nobody   enjoys   hearing   .   we   need   to   talk   .   laundry   be   gone   ,   and   mind   a   flurry   of   unspoken   queries   .   worries   .   “   okay   .   uh   …   what   is   it   ?   ”

"  well...  "  she  doesn't  even  know  where  to  begin.  she  wants  to  tell  him  how  nothing  will  ever  be  the  same.  how  there's  a  now  and  an  after.  she  wants  him  to  know  that  he's  her  panacea  —  that  a  simple  kiss  is  a  remedy  for  all,  that  he's  her  daylight.  in  the  same  breath,  she'd  admit  that  she's  scared.  nauseous.  but  try  as  she  might,  the  silence  persists,  leading  her  instead  to  seek  comfort  and  relief  from  standing  for  too  long  by  taking  a  seat.  "  i  can't  believe  that  out  of  all  the  things  you  could  be  doing  now,  you're  folding  laundry. "  that  realization  alone  is  enough  to  make  vita  laugh,  breaking  the  tension  that's  inadvertently  been  building  up  in  the  sacred  space  between  them,  in  their  little  world  and  within  her.  she  didn't  imagine  it  like  this.  none  of  it.  yet  everything  about  this  moment  is so painfully them.  the  simplicity  of  it  all  glows  at  the  edges,  soothing  the  swelling  uneasiness  in  her  chest,  bringing  the  colour  back  to  her  face.  she  sighs  again,  having  no  time  to  rehearse  and  redress  her  words  —  to  give  them  the  beauty  they  deserve.  " i'm  sure  you're  aware  that  i  went  to  the  doctor's  this  morning  for  a  check  up.  i  thought  i  was  just  being  anxious  about  my  work  and  therefore  weary,  but  the  doctor  had  something  else  to  say. "  her  body  knew.  before  everyone  else.  even  when  she  had  refused  to  listen.  despite  the  dozens  of  roles  under  her  belt,  this  new  one,  greatly  coveted,  that  of  a  mother,  would  undoubtedly  be  her  favourite.  calmer  at  last,  resolute  too,  she  smiles  at  him once more,  contemplating,  trying  to  condense  everything,  from  start  to  finish,  and  her  happiness  too  into  two  words.  it's  easy. it's the easiest thing she's ever done.
