Yesterday, I finished watching all of Steven Universe, Steven Universe: The Movie, and Steven Universe Future for the first time because I never got the chance when I was a kid.
And..?? I’ve realized that there were a LOT of misconceptions about this show that I had before having watched it. These preconceived notions came from what I saw/heard from the fandom, which is very telling.
*MAJORRR SPOILERS FOR SU*
For one, I somehow managed to fully convince myself that Pearl was a main antagonist. Like, she was the big bad of the show. I don’t know how we got there, but we did and when I was watching the show I was SWEATING and so sad because I was starting to really like Pearl so having her switch to the bad side was gonna destroy me…and then it never happened and I’m SOO happy it didn’t!! I was also under the assumption that Spinel was her henchman or something, and after I watched the original show and didn’t see her show up, I genuinely thought she was a figment of my imagination…until I watched the movie (I cried so hard she’s so tragiccc)
Another one was that Rose is a terrible person.
Like..she isn’t? The only reason why Steven is angry at her is because he saw her story in reverse. He knew Rose Quartz: Leader of the Rebellion and Role Model as his mom first, which then turned to Rose Quartz: Leader of the Rebellion, Not that Great? which turned to Rose Quartz: Me?, Rose Quartz: Not Me, Rose Quartz: Not Rose Quartz?!? And then Pink/Rose Quartz.
He kept uncovering parts of her from [most recent] to [the very beginning]. Rose did terrible things before, of course. But I also immediately acknowledged that she isn’t the scum of the earth.
OH, and neither is Greg! I went into the first episode expecting an absolute deadbeat who didn’t care about his son and what I got was…admittedly, something kind of like that minus the “doesn’t love his son” part.
Both Steven’s parents are not as bad as I thought they would be (though they are still reallyyy rough).
I also thought that Steven would get to meet Pink Diamond at some point…yeahh I don’t know why I thought this or where I got it from (maybe those really well made fan edits and episodes) but that was just never gonna happen lol
I have a lot more but these were the “bigger” ones

Wait guys.. I haven’t watch the new adult gaang movie only leaks I wasn’t been able to avoid but
The scene where the gaang is in the spirit world and they’re all different ages? And while Zuko and Katara are their old people TLOK designs, AANG AND SOKKA ARE THEIR ATLA DESIGNS
Stop I’m gonna be sick
The concept of Zuko and Katara having elderly versions of themselves to turn into while Sokka and Aang don’t because they both die before ever being able to enter that era of their lives

As someone who really liked Jason in his debut book, The Lost Hero, I can not in good faith pretend that he is a well-written character:
For a main character who was raised by wolves (basically a feral child), abandoned by his family under dire circumstances, lived as a soldier in Camp Jupiter and suffers from amnesia, his characterization is mind-blowingly disenchanting. Just think: struggling to communicate with his new found friends, trying to keep up with the new socialization needs, attempting to figure out his interests, values and beliefs. There was a plethora of avenues for exploration
His scope for fatal flaws. Sure, he does have some flaws, but it could've been executed so much better. In the Mark of Athena, the conflict regarding Nico's fate could've established his fatal flaw as excessive/blind caution, or occasional harsh insensitivity. Because, let's be brutally honest here: Nico was doing his job as an ambassador by keeping secrets (the gods themselves kept the two camps apart). His suspicion of Nico was not really valid, and could've been utilised effectively (this isn't the only time Riordan drops the ball on Jason's potential fatal flaw, by the way).
In House of Hades, his writing left a lot to be desired. The quest for self-identity being tied off to a choice between the two camps had potential, but it also encroached the other ways said quest could've been written. Aslo, Riordan's execution certainly missed the mark.
In Blood of Olympus, his writing starts on a promising note, with poignant (albeit very late) insight into his abandonment issues. Said issues, however seem relevant only for the first few pages; by the end of the book they're already forgotten. Unfortunately, the remainder of his PoV chapters in this book are more akin to page-filler than actual substance.
Do we think that Jason’s fatal flaw in canon is dumb or unreasonable given what we see in canon? Or do we think it’s fine?
It’s essentially the inability to make your own decisions/indecisiveness, right (Temptation to Deliberate)? So in what ways does he convey this in the books (if at all) and should it be changed to something more like the potential flaws OP suggested?
I thought about this a while ago, and have considered that if I were to ever be given the chance to rewrite Jason’s character, I would personally make his fatal flaw Compliance (idk if anyone has suggested this already but f it we ball).
I think making his flaw Compliance would add an interesting layer to his character if he constantly felt obligated to go with whatever someone “above” him said, especially if his abandonment issues are whispering in his ear, telling him,
“Complying is how you get them to stay. You want them to stay, don’t you? You were probably a bad son who didn’t do what he was told and that’s why you’re with Lupa. Mom thought you needed to be taught obedience. So be good, and you won’t be thrown out”
Though..I wonder what implications that fatal flaw would bring for the infamous scene with Zeus where Jason calls him “unwise” 🤔
