Hii,, I'm curious what's your genuine thought on Constance? Personally she's one of my fav characters and I love her with Pendergast, (I'm 100% certain they did have sex in Angel of Vengeance). But I was quite surprised that many readers seem to hate her as the story progresses. Basically saying that she became too OP, too crazy, or she's hogging the story, etc. I mean do they really want a 100 year old something character not doing anything in the story? I like that she's different than the other female characters in Pendergast novel.
I also really love Constance but I also do see how some people may have been turned off by how her character has changed. Broadly, I think you can split Constance's characterization into two parts: pre-seduction by Diogenes and post-seduction (and I mean specifically that moment in Book of the Dead). Pre-seduction she seemed, to me anyway, more mentally on par with Corrie rather than someone like Pendergast. Incredibly intelligent and well-learned, yes, but also isolated, unsure of herself, and, frankly, probably just sad when it comes to the brass tacks. Post-seduction we see the change and I think that's because for the first time she has true agency. She couldn't help becoming an orphan, her siblings dying, and she didn't really have a choice to live with Leng or get the serum. But after what Diogenes did she made the conscious decision to not end her unnatural life and become an active agent in her own existence.
For my money, I think Crimson Shore Constance is the best Constance. She's still a little fish out of water-y (like when she flubs trying to get information from others) but still is determined enough to stay with Pendergast when the mystery gets going and when she tries to put a move on him at the end. You can see a bit of her becoming more confident, if not confrontational, but she's still first and foremost an observer who isn't about to jump into something (arguably) half-cocked.
I do understand people who think she may have become a bit too erratic and OP and I don't entirely disagree, especially since so much of this development happens off screen so we don't even get to see her actually get good. You can argue it's cheap for Pendergast to also be good at basically everything he does but at least he has the background of being former military and an FBI agent so him being good at guns, stealth, reconnaissance, etc. etc., makes more sense than Constance who just reads a lot but should not have any practical experience. I'm fine with Constance with her stiletto and trying to fight or be involved in action, but Constanbo always feels a little... unrealistic to me.
I also just don't think the time travel/alternative universe travel was a good direction to go. It had it's moments but if I could change one thing about the series, I would scrap those three books and not just because they got rid of my second husbando. I don't have an issue with Constance getting some main character attention, but I wish it was done differently and in a better setting.
So my TL;DR is that I love Constance, but I understand why some people have come to dislike her and even I don't necessarily love how she's been developed. I think there's a middle ground between her being demure and OP but recently we've veered too far to the OP end of the spectrum.
I actually have a bit more thoughts on the subject but this is long enough as is.
I spent the July 4th holiday down the shore seeing my grandparents. It was a really good time. I had plenty of good food and good drinks. I couldn't have but I kind of wish I could have spent an extra day or two there.
Finishing my doctoral degree did something to me. It's like at the end of Pendergast where Proctor tells Pendergast that he feels lost now that the Company was disbanded and how it all just ended.
I've been home for a bit now and I've been doing academic thingsβ’ but I don't have a proper position. So that's a hit to my ego. I have so many thoughts. I spent my entire adult life either wanting to get a PhD or being in the process of getting the PhD and now it's just over but I'm still here not having properly moved on.
But to vaguely connect this rambling to our boy, here is a cryptid-quality photo of your admin from my vacation. There's a historic hotel that has a lounge where I stopped for some drinks and it's in the same place that used to be the hotel's first legal cocktail lounge after Prohibition. It was definitely a place Pendergast would go for a drink after a day of beaching and beach-themed activities. I think he'd also appreciate the old touches of the areas Victorian history.

Pendergast at a cookout. He's got ribs on a paper plate, lemonade in a red Solo cup, and corn on the cob with those little corn-shaped holders. You know the ones.
We had food eater, but what about π± eater Pendergast? 1-10? π
11. No doubt, no notes. This man is willing, able, and happy to oblige.

While Corrie is away at boarding school she wants to go to a concert. Something like Metallica or Godsmack. But because Pendergast is worried about Diogenes, he insists that he goes with her to make sure she stays safe. Of course it is not his type of event but he bears it for her sake and although he doesn't enjoy the show, he does enjoy seeing Corrie happy. And possibly could be convinced to let her up on his shoulders to see better.
Imagine
As children, in a rare moment of calm, Pendergast and Diogenes sitting together watching the sunset.
On a scale of 1-10, how much of an eater is Pendergast?
Good question. Probably like a 3, but what throws off the scale is that he's really into good food. He isn't going to be snacking on goldfish crackers or bingeing a bag of chips, but will clean his plate and not turn food down when it's something to his caliber.
Pendergast and an equally as mysterious and quirky wife taking on crime π The ultimate power couple and Bureau nightmare.
You mean me? Yeah, hard agree.
Imagine: Pendergast calling your admin Dr. for the first time
I successfully defended my dissertation today. It's honestly so weird to be here after so many year trying to get into a program and then doing a program but I am done. I have other concerns now (re: finding a job) but for now I celebrate. I just want to say thank you to you folks. Even if you give/gave 0 fucks about my experience I appreciated being able to occasionally post about what i was doing and not feeling like it was just straight going into the proverbial bin. It's been a hell of a journey and this blog, and people, has been a help to get through it. Genuinely, thank you.
Pendergast would be proud. All the Penderpals would be proud. Corrie having Pendergast at her graduation is a major vibe. I have a lot of thoughts and emotions (ew.) jumbled right now but at the minimum- thank you.
I know I have some asks in the box. I'll get to them soon. Promise.

Do you think that Pendergast ever actually told Constance that Enoch Leng killed her sister? It's been a while since I read the books so I'm not 100% sure, but from what I remember from canon, I think Diogenes threw that fact at her at some point, and she reacted in a way that seemed to indicate that she had been in denial about it. Like she may have had her suspicions, but they were never confirmed before, and at least part of her was hoping Leng wasn't the reason for Mary's disappearance.
Yeah, it's been a while and I'm not 100% sure either but what you say sounds right. I think he tried to use that as evidence that Pendergast kept things from her and wasn't to be trusted. Assuming that's true (at least that Diogenes told her the truth) my personal thought would be that at some point Constance would ask Pendergast about it. Not necessarily because she didn't believe Diogenes (again, if this is all true, I remember when he was visiting her that he brought little mementos and would tell her stories that proved some of what he told her about their shared history and the family in general) but because she didn't want to be left in the dark. Like a child.
Imagine
Teenage Corrie using the classic collect call hack to get Pendergast to pick her up.
Pendergast picks up his phone.
Operator: You have a collect call from... It'sCorrieComeGetMeAtTheMall... Do you wish to accept the charges?
I think he'd be mildly amused at her use of the trick but also this man would have zero qualms about accepting a collect call so she could properly tell him to get her.
Imagine
Pendergast spending a long weekend at a remote French winery (with the Penderpal of your choice) enjoying the sun, tastings, and beautiful scenery.
Imagine
Pendergast is out, minding his own business, and someone asks him where he got his platinum card, referring to his hair, not believing he's naturally that blond.
Imagine
Taking a drive with Pendergast down a long, empty, country highway during heavy rain.

Imagine
Pendergast gets called out to a case out in the Pacific Northwest where the victims are believed to have had run ins with Bigfoot. After he's caught the real killer in the forest, he catches a glimpse of something off in the distance walking behind some trees...
Obligatory 'not dead' post. Being on the cusp on defending your dissertation is busy and stressful and not fun. I'm constantly oscillating between STRESS and being just kinda-ok?-not-really-just-accepting-it's-gonna-be-what-it-be.
I think even Pendergast, during his program, would sometimes just stare out the window, having taken his eyes off all his books and papers, and go 'fuck me'.
