Unlike a certain pair of dogs, Malak knows he’s a familiar. Does he know what that means?...debatable

But he does know protecting this long skinny doctor man’s mental and emotional well-being is his first priority

To that end, well...contrary to what Julian says, Malak actually does know how to talk

Most ravens do, after all - they’re very social and very smart, and Malak’s social-and-smart is magically-augmented

But when Julian first got him, he said something about how of course Malak can’t talk, only parrots can do that, and, well...Julian’s awfully jumpy with things he doesn’t understand

Malak has a vocabulary of around seventy words, but he’ll never use them around Julian, so as not to spook him

If Julian’s not around, though, he’s happy to show off, especially if it gets him a treat

Eggs are his favorite - Julian has a special blue egg cup just for him, and puts it out when they have breakfast together - but he also loves meat scraps, raisins, and crickets

(Believe it or not, he doesn’t have much of a taste for leeches)

And his favorite human food is anything he isn’t supposed to have. Portia can’t leave a pie or a casserole on a window to cool once Malak knows where she lives - she once saw him dive headfirst into a pan of kugel

He’s a hound for cashews, but they’re so fatty he can only have one or so at a time; Julian has to keep the jar locked in his clinic, or Malak will eat them ‘til he passes out

On top of that, he steals shiny things and keeps them in an old hat he’s turned into a nest in the eaves of Julian’s apartment

(His Corvid Bastard Level is magically-augmented, too; Julian calls him Malak Ilyich when he’s in trouble)

He likes helping around the clinic, too - he can’t come in with patients (for sanitary reasons), but he’ll sit in the front office and chirp little songs to people while they wait, or hop around to entertain them

When it comes to pets and scratches, it takes a bit for him to warm up to someone who isn’t Julian, but if Julian tells him they’re safe, he loves having the feathers on his neck scritched, and the base of his beak gently stroked

I’m here to bring you some facts about Julian’s real name. yup, we’re talking about Ilya

first of all, i heard a lot of people pronouncing his name with the accent on “I”, but it should be pronounced with the accent on “a” ya boi dats weird but that’s how it goes in slavic languages

and second, “Ilyushka” is more of a teasing than tender name, it’s like something your relatives or friends would call you if they’re trying to mock you but in a good friendly way (idk how to explain this) (pasha and mazelinka called him like that)

if you want a cute tender name you can go with “Ilyusha” or “Ilyushenka” (accent on “u”)
