this was fun
i now understand the people who wants a new season of akayona cuz why tf are the studios not milking this manga??
shoujosei renaissance this year š¤ hoping for a s2 announcement now that the manga is in its final arc š¤
Iāve always thought it but Gyokuyouās line, āIf I said I was jealous of Concubine Fuyou, would I be a terrible woman?ā seemed to point at two things, her jealousy of her being free to finally leave the inner palace, and secondly, the freedom to love and be loved in return.
I mean though she may be the Empress, and though she may be the most favored by the Emperor, Iām sure sheās clever and shrewd enough to think that she wouldnāt actually ever have his love. And that is what makes her so intriguing in that regardless of her own feelings, she can still be human and feel some sort of sadness about it, at the what-ifs.
Considering the latest chapters in the web novels, the parallels and contrasts between The Emperor (Yang) and Aduo, as well as Jinshi and Maomao being driven so hard just hurts so good.
That conversation between Jinshi and the Emperor revealing their chosen actions regarding their āone cherished flowerā. The Emperor choosing to bind her to him, and cherishing her and protecting her vs Jinshiās decision to let her go rather than trap her in the inner palace, such that it drives Aduo to tears because she sees in Jinshi and Maomao what could have been.
Itās so painful precisely because the Emperor and Aduo were where Jinshi and Maomao were ending up toward if not for the development they underwent. Contrast the Jinshi of earlier volumes who I think, in his desperation, would have chosen the same course of action the Emperor had in regard to Aduo and the Jinshi of now, who has matured.
But in the same vein that none of these characters are perfect, and are intriguing in their flaws, I think Aduo is the same as Maomao. Except that Maomao now finally was able to accept and let herself love, whereas Aduo used and still uses that āfamilialā tie and even Yue as the reason why she still chooses to stay with Yang.
This just may be my own interpretation, but I think Aduo truly loved (loves?) the Emperor in her own way, as more than a āsiblingā or a āfriendā and that she is an unreliable narrator in her own right, same as Maomao. But alas, I donāt think Aduo and the Emperor managed to communicate properly on this part of their relationship, unlike other aspects where they can be free with one another. And now itās too late, because the Emperor in his foolish youth made that irreversible choice and clipped Aduoās wings.
That four way conference was perfect in that it was basically both pairs seeing mirrors of them in each other, of the past and the future, of what was and what could have been. And though the Emperor made mistakes, I canāt find it in myself to judge him too harshly because, as one analysis puts in, he didnāt have the same freedoms Jinshi has now, nor did he have the same people around him who could have guided him on the right path. Suiren and Gaoshun who were there to see what happened with the Emperor and Aduo, are probably doing their best to nudge Jinshi and Mamao in the right direction such that they wouldnāt repeat past mistakes.
Itās that one post you know? The love was there, it was always there. But perhaps, even then, it wasnāt enough.

everytime ah-duo and emperor yang call jinshi as yue or zui i melt inside š„¹
itās interesting that some would want jinshi to be emperor and maomao to be empress when itās been hinted multiple times that he doesnāt want to be and itāll be the cause of his early demise. nothing wrong with wanting him as the emperor but i personally donāt see it as a good thing.
just a short rambling after reading the web novel and seeing the latest ln15 spoilers.
> jinshi, especially after that scene on ln5 shows immense character growth in the latter volumes. in the latest ln, heād rather let go of maomao than chain her to him when he (unwillingly) becomes emperor. previously, he proclaimed that he wanted her to be his wife and would get rid of any obstacles hence why he branded himself to the disappointment of the emperor and maomao. he was quite possessive and childish when he was young, far from the current jinshi now.
> same with maomao, she used to avoid trouble and involvement in the royal court but now sheās more outspoken about her thoughts and feelings. confident with her skills and quite assertive.
> there is this deep understanding between them and in the epilogue itās clear that they both didnāt want him on the throne. they used to be evasive with their feelings and now theyāre being straightforward with each other and thatās progress if you ask me. itās subtle but they show their care through physical touch and company (itās their love language!!)
> a lot of fans have noted that they parallel both of their parentsā failed relationships and i agree (donāt want to elaborate on this cuz itāll be long)
> ah duo and the emperor (also maomao) know that jinshi will be a wise and kind emperor but this will cause him to die early. now that heās doing the emperorās work while heās recovering, he was clearly overworked to the point where maomao has to take care of him. this is just a glimpse of what will happen to him once he ascends the throne and thatās not what ah duo wants for her only child, same with maomao. if he does become the next emperor, he needs maomao by his side to keep him in check and thatās another problem to face politically and emotionally. sheās willing to be by his side but at the expense of her freedom and jinshi doesnāt want to rob her of that.
tldr: jinshi becoming the emperor is not the happy ending weāre looking for. unless the author will give him a leeway like him becoming a regnant until his siblings are of age or if maomao is the only consort he will have. and thereās still a long way to go tho because he still doesnāt know his real parents and if iirc thereās this faction who wants him on the throne. more content to consume lol.
Isnt this also the reason why he worked in the inner palace to assure that the emperor will have an heir that isn't him. And why he pretends that the "emperor's younger brother" is sickly and weak so people will less likely to try to make him the emperor.
He doesnt want to be emperor, just let him live his life with maomao without the responsibility of a nation
exactly!! jinshi may be a capable emperor but it isnāt meant for him despite being the rightful heir. heās too human and kind to be the head of a country (not that these character traits are bad perse) everyone close to him knows that.
if we want a happy ending for them itāll be when the emperor gives him a new name thatās has nothing to do with the royal family. heāll be free to do whatever he wants and can be with maomao.

ALTA Live Action Season 1 Initial Thoughts (Spoilers)
I just finished the season, and holy shit!
Quick things that need to be addressed/debunked:
āSokka is no longer sexistā
I dont know what people were talking about when they talked about Sokkaās āsexismā being removed. Itās still there! But not in the overly exaggerated comical way it was in the original.
In fact, itās more in line with ancient practices of indigenous tribes where men are seen as protectors and providers while women are expected to nurture. Itās not the same āboys are better than girlsā narrative in the original.
Additionally, Suki still beats the fuck out of Sokka and humbled him really quick. Theyāre super cute by the way. And I love Sukiās āI like my men a little stupidā vibe. Sheās great.
āAang doesnāt run away like the original!ā
That is not true. He does run away, but not because heās trying to get away from the temple but instead to get some air because he feels overwhelmed. Heās more like taking a quick break and planning to come back. Itās not exactly the same, but almost. It also is done in a way where his guilt feels more justified.
āKatara doesnāt talk about her mom anymore like the originalā
This is true⦠BECAUSE THEY SHOW INSTEAD OF TELL. I was honestly not prepared to see the death Kya in such graphic detail and how Katara was in the room hiding when it happened. Itās honestly really sad and more heartbreaking.
Plot:
The timeline seems to be ambiguous compared to the original series where it was āend of current year.ā In fact, they repeat āthree yearsā a few times, which makes me think if the series get greenlit for more seasons, it would be over a three year period.
Jet is still villainized but given more nuance and not a simple "good v bad" way like the original.
Zukoās story about how he got his scar has additional lore that makes him come across as even more selfless and compassionate. The additional context of the platoon he advocated for in the war meeting, becoming his current crew, really added to the story.
Eradicated the nepotism baby plot point with Pakku only training Katara when he finds out he used to date her grandma. Instead, Katara proves herself and ends up teaching the other male fighters the techniques she learned from watching other benders use their elements and mimics them.
This season doesnāt have Aang learning any waterbending, but rather facing his trauma and the consequences of his actions. He get roasted by all his past lives. Which is an interesting choice, but I think it works well in how they executed it.
This season seems to actually be Katara focused and her journey of learning waterbending which I honestly loved because it really hits home the element of āwaterā being the story of an untrained waterbender learning her element. But, I do think Aang couldāve learned a little bending. It felt a little off.
Katara ends up advocating for all waterbending women and ends up leading an army of both men and women during the siege. Sheās really bad ass and is given the title of master without being formally trained by Pakku. She made herself a master.
I think the timeline is a little wonky because of how much they had to fit in with the limited episodes they had.
Kuruk is given respect! I loved that.
June actually seems into Iroh which I thought was a funny but cool way to flip the script from the original.
The relationship between Zuko and Iroh is really beautifully executed. I love the depth they added with flashback scenes and their bond prior to the Agni Kai. It also wasnāt as frustrating watching Iroh and Zukoās dynamic because Iroh communicated with Zuko in a way he could understand with straight answers rather than seeming to actively sabotage him with cryptic puns and shenanigans like the original.
They changed the love triangle with Yue Hahn and Sokka to be very healthy. They gave Yue autonomy and a choice in her relationship- which- again- is much more in line with indigenous cultures. Also, Hahn and Sokkaās relationship is really supportive and full of respect and no ill will.
They way they handled grief and the realities of war with the loss of life was very well done and really drove home the point that this is a war and these are child soldiers.
Thereās a lot more but these are my initial thoughts. Will probably post more later.
Shipping:
Kataang is all but removed. Literally DOA. There is no indication of a crust on either side. Itās painted like a sibling relationship, which is like the original, but this time everyone seems to be on the same page. But, I swear the writers had to have read ZK fics because damn.
They canonized a popular Zutara theory/hc about the cave of two lovers and how the crystals would light up once it went completely dark instead of a ākissā activating the crystal glow.
Speaking of the Cave of two lovers. They keep the Oma and Shu story with red and blue coloring. Making it come across more as foreshadowing than a direct link to the present tunnel story.
Sokka is put in Aangās place with Katara in the tunnels and turned it into a story about the love of family and sibling bonds. Aang wasnāt even present.
Zuko and Katara share a meaningful look when they first see each other and continue to have a Katara centric scene followed by a Zuko centric scene and vice versa.
The scarf scene. I will not be elaborating further. If you know, you know.
Zuko and Katara fight scene in the North is epic. He still taunts her with almost the exact same dialogue but itās so sassy- I love the banter.
Suki and Sokka were really cute and the actors had great chemistry. I think Yue and Sokka was really rushed and didnāt really feel anything about them, honestly. But I attribute that to lack of episodes to develop all that plot.
natla is not perfect, not the best if iām being honest. itās just okay (better than the movie) and this is me without my puritan glasses on. casts were good, i especially like how dallas nailed zukoās awkwardness lol, and i appreciate their dedication to do their own stunts. vfx and costumes were great. the writing tho⦠this is the reason why i stopped watching live actions in general. iām aware that adapting a book or a cartoon is hard and it doesnāt have to be 100% accurate but if youāre gonna add or remove stuff at least make it make sense and ties the whole story together.
the only reason i want a season 2 is because of my girl TOPH š¤
