Omegas tend to crave the scent and touch of alphas after traumatic experiences, or so Adam has read.
He knows plenty of omegas, though he’s never been asked to scent or touch them, and he’s never had them experience trauma.
That all changes when he meets Nigel.
Nigel is unlike any omega Adam has ever met, seen, or even read about. He’s very large, not at all welcoming, and he doesn’t show weakness. Adam likes Nigel, enjoys just spending time with him when they see each other in the laundry room of their shared apartment building, and as the weeks go by he begins to realize that his like of Nigel is more than just friendly.
He wants to make him happy.
Adam isn’t sure how to go about that, though he does get Nigel to smile sometimes, and his scent seems happy enough. Nigel doesn’t talk about things like emotions, and they’re not really all that close even after knowing each other for over a month.
He doesn’t expect to ever get the courage to try and get to know Nigel more, but just seeing him sometimes is enough.
Seven weeks into their thin friendship someone knocks on Adam’s door at two in the morning. He doesn’t like being woken up in the middle of the night, not even for an emergency, but something tells him to look in the peephole.
Nigel is on the other side of the door, his eyes red with what seems like tears, and when Adam opens up to see why he’s immediately got Nigel in his arms. He freezes, unsure what to do, but steps back inside before closing the door.
“’m sorry, darling,” Nigel mumbles, nuzzling Adam’s neck, “So sorry.”
Adam’s anxiety gets replaced by worry, and he gently pushes Nigel back to look at him. His shirt has got blood on it, but he doesn’t look hurt. “What’s happened?”
“Darko is dead,” Nigel says, his voice thick, “He’s dead. He’s….”
Adam doesn’t know who Darko is, but obviously Nigel was close to them, and he gently leads him toward the bathroom without a thought. His shower gets warm very fast, and he takes off Nigel’s clothes with care.
This isn’t about sex, it’s about comfort, and he takes off his own because he knows Nigel needs him right now. The water doesn’t help his worry, though it seems to ease Nigel’s pain while the blood goes down the drain, and when he nuzzles Nigel’s neck and scents him that helps too.
The word makes Adam warm all over. He’s never been called ‘Alpha’ by any omegas before, and the rightness of Nigel’s voice being the one that did makes him very happy.
The shower ends and they go to his bed still naked, not bothering to be otherwise. Nigel climbs on top of him when he lays down, his tears wetting Adam’s neck, and when Adam’s hand comes down his back he shudders in response.
“I’m sorry,” he says, “I don’t know what to do.”
“This is good,” Nigel whispers, his breath warm against Adam’s skin, “So good, Alpha.”
Adam’s body reacts to their closeness and skin touching but he doesn’t say a word. Neither does Nigel, who only tightens his hold.
“I’m sorry,” Adam says again, “I’m very sorry, Nigel.”
He doesn’t say anything about the blood, he doesn’t know Nigel well enough to do so, but he’s happy it’s not Nigel’s if anything else. Adam falls asleep with Nigel in his arms, and wakes up alone.
