do you have any interesting or fun sci-fi fantasy book recommendations? :0
yes actually!! i’m more into experimental sci fi, but i enjoyed three body problem by liu cixin (trans. ken liu) and the dispossessed by ursula k le guin (novel of all time actually). of course, my favorite work of science fiction is the cosmicomics by italo calvino (trans. william weaver) and i in fact recommend pretty much everything calvino ever wrote. invisible planets (the name of course inspired by calvino’s invisible cities) is a great anthology of contemporary chinese sci fi short stories (and a few pieces of critical writing) compiled and translated by ken liu. i also enjoyed exhalation by ted chiang, but i feel foolish even recommending it because i feel like everyone has read it in a post-arrival world lmao. as for lesser known works that i absolutely adored, the employees by olga ravn (trans. martin aitken) is incredible. i also love hackers by aase berg (trans. johannes göransson), dance dance revolution by cathy park hong, and astroecology by johannes heldén (trans. kirkwood adams, elizabeth clark wessel, and johannes heldén). aside from parable of the sower, which i read as a child and don’t remember very well, i’ve only read a couple short stories by octavia butler, but “speech sounds” and “bloodchild” are both very good. finally, while it’s not exactly a work of sci fi itself, the poetics of science fiction by peter stockwell is actually a really interesting book, and there’s a lot of great “classic” sci fi recs in there if you read it carefully.
