i won't deny that the giw and seven have a deep backstory and connection, maybe arguably more than thirteen and seven (i saw people talking about this on tiktok, HOWEVERR in my personal opinion i dont think this is entirely true.) it makes me wonder where thirteens path is gonna lead in season 6 since her arc finally took off, I wonder how they'll play out. I think what I like the most about them is that it isn't just seven fighting like it was previously, and instead they both take turns protecting each other. I only bring this up because I saw people upset at the fact giw may not come back and for whatever reason, they just dont like thirteen?? The entire point of seven telling people they're mad at the old him and the things he did is that SHE IS A COMPONENT OF HIS PAST, and I think thats a stupid argument because they weren't evaluating thirteens character at ALL, only her relationship with seven and thats just really dull. I LOVE the giw's character, but her coming back in their current timeline for Seven doesn't make sense to me. Giw is a symbol for helping Seven move on.
If anything, I think the fact theyre able to look out for EACHOTHER makes their story just as deep, even if they've only known eachother for a short time. Seven blindly trusts her instead. Do people forget thirteen is literally the first person to protect seven from other assassins?? After a lifetime over fighting for himself, you would think people would find this "deep". The argument also contradicts itself, because thirteen is her own character with her own story. We dont know anything about the giw aside from the fact she was used as a lure for seven, but gradually became her own character when she wanted him to lead a new life. You can't hate thirteen for her relationship with seven not being "as deep" as his previous one because that isn't all she is. The story with giw is very tragic, but that doesn't mean it's more important or deeper than what is going on with thirteen. It's okay to have preferences, but disliking 13 over it just unravels the entire point of the story and seven trying to move on.
it's kind of insane because to me at least, girl in white and seven do not have a deep backstory.
their backstory has a lot of implications - there's a lot of weight behind their actions. but inherently, it's not all that deep. it was summed up in one episode. it isn't that deep, because the girl in white isn't that deep. her relationship with seven cannot be deeper than thirteen's with seven, because she was nothing else but a ploy for seven. she was nobody, and the only thing she would ever do that would matter is the plan. which, mind you, the intent from the start was always to eliminate him - regardless of how she chose to execute that in the end.
thirteen's relationship with seven is not built off of that. it is built off the first action she takes in the pilot episode: saving him, inadvertently or not, from a robot trying to kill him. this instantly proves her capacity for empathy, her unwillingness to stand aside and let things run their course. it proves she is capable of saving someone, even if it's not a choice she'd make on purpose right now. and above that, 'saving' somebody for thirteen would always mean protecting them.
for the girl in white, it never was. she 'saved' seven by 'killing' him - the girl in white did not have the will, nor power, nor want to defy the odds. because she was nobody and nothing except for the plan. the girl in white takes the easy way out - the way that she 'saves' seven isn't entirely what he would've wanted - yes, the current seven thanks her for this opportunity, but the past seven would never have chosen this. he would have fought for her. because that's what mattered most to seven - past and present.
seven and thirteen are able to trust each other, fight for each other, often blindly choosing each other over unimaginable ramifications.
ultimately it doesn't matter which is deeper - i think the point kind of is girl in white is nothing aside from the plan up until she chooses to 'save' seven in this way, and thirteen is still her own present character. judging her solely off her relationship with seven is always gonna misrepresent her. and people won't ever understand her relationship with seven fully, because to understand their relationship, you have to understand thirteen.
thank you i actually swear people watch the show with their eyes glued shut. I think the biggest problem is people think tragic=deep and because of this mindset, they fail to understand sevens relationships with other characters. How can someone look at thirteen and her character growth through FIVE seasons and go "eh, giw is more important." I agree it's not a competition on who has a better connection with seven, moreover it's people comparing the two and misinterpreting them. Giw and thirteen aren't even made to be compared which is why I don't understand how people come to that conclusion, thirteen is a completely separate character both in writing and the show, and people creating useless comparisons leads them nowhere. Giw is important to sevens story, yes, but presently not anymore and the show has stated that multiple times ***GUYSS if seven can move on from the giw so can you!!!*** giw did everything because she was told to. All of thirteens actions are her own judgement.

this is taohua (桃花), my daughter.
some basic information about her is uhhh she’s 19 years old, her job is to be a bodyguard/poisontester, her preferred weapon is a bow and arrow with poisoned tips, and she is manjusaka’s biological sister
OK time for the real yapping
starting with manjusaka, im going to explain their relationship since it’s imo one of the more interesting parts of tao’s lore
the sect they were both born into (which i’ve been calling the red flower sect up to now but that might not be the final name) was a large but secretive group that remained close-knit by only allowing people to join by marrying one of the members or being born into it. this means that marriage was taught to the children of the sect as something very important, less because of love and more because of political power. by marrying someone strong, they bring more power into the sect and keep it from becoming weak with time. this view of romance that was imparted onto the children was something i thought of before i ever thought of tao, because i thought it would be a cool explanation for why manjusaka acts the way she does in regards to her constant flirting with the men around her, even id arguably no true romantic feelings were present
anyways, the sect was very powerful, and only the truly strong were allowed to learn the special techniques that were passed down through the generations and become fully fledged members. the sect also dealt in poisons a lot (? idk i haven’t fully fleshed out the red flower sect stuff), so many of the born members have a natural poison immunity.
tao was, for all intents and purposes, born a natural genius. from a young age, she showed talent in qi control, swordplay, and marksmanship that only grew as she got older. however, her true passion was poisons. she was always interested in it more than anything else, and was often found reading about them or trying to mix them herself. since she was so multitalented and even loved one of the central parts of the sect so much, tao was often favored by older members of the sect and praised. as her older sister, manjusaka often felt a bit jealous of the attention her sister received over her when she had to fight so hard to preform to high levels for only a fraction of the praise, but she didn’t usually let it affect how she treated her sister.
however, despite tao being ostensibly favored, manjusaka and tao were both mistreated by multiple of the elder members of the sect, who pressured them to preform and punished them harshly for any mistake. manjusaka often took on a lot of the suffering in tao’s place, as she felt duty-bound to do so as an older sister. her motives did not always stay fully pure though, as when she was stressed she would often lash out at her sister verbally and remind her of how much manjusaka does for her as a means of guilting her.
at some point, their sect started to have friction with the killer league, which started to intensify after tao and manju’s older cousin mahua “died” in a fight after taking the life of a shadow killer (however, mahua did not actually die and escaped from xuanwu, but nobody knew this at the time). the killer league leader (who i’m just gonna say is already the leader by this point) wanted to get rid of the troublesome sect entirely, but it would be difficult to get in close to such a self-protective sect, even if the entire killer league would be able to wipe the group out if mobilized. when manjusaka learned about the plans of the leader to destroy her sect, she decided to use this as an opportunity to escape on her own as she had no attachment to the “family” of her sect besides maybe her sister and mother (who had already died by this point rip)
a little aside for mahua. he is 3 years older than manjusaka and 7 years older than tao. he is/was a very strong fighter, and yet he remained kinder than just about everyone else in the sect. he often spent time with tao when she was young to read her stories and teach her about spirits and superstitions. it’s because of mahua that later tao will develop an attachment to superstitions and choose to believe in them. in short, the situation with his “death” is that 10 years ago (from the present) when he was 16, there was person he loved. this guy was called lao haoran, and he was killed by a shadow killer. as a result, mahua killed the one that killed his friend and became a wanted criminal afterwards, eventually escaping xuanwu after nearly being killed and assumed dead because of his injuries.
back to manju and tao, the sect tradition was to officialize members born into it when they reached “marriage age” which they considered to be 16 (I DO NOT AGREE WITH THIS, THESE WERE NOT GOOD PEOPLE). this meant getting access to the sect’s techniques which manjusaka wanted so she waited until she turned 16 and was officialized to start her plan to help the killer league leader destroy the sect.
on that day, everyone who was part of the sect was successfully killed because of manjusaka’s careful planning. however, tao was the youngest child in the entire sect at the time at only 12 years old and therefore not an official member, so it was not necessarily a requirement for her to die. however, the leader is not one to spare someone just because he doesn’t technically need to kill them (unless his dumbass doesn’t think to check if the burning rubble actually finished the job, L bozo). still, tao was spared that day for another reason
it was her talent that was noticed that day when she managed to barely fight off several grown men by herself, although she was left with severe injuries on her right eye and neck in doing so. when the killer league leader saw her pointing a knife at him that was clutched in her tiny hand, he saw something he could possibly put to use.
when manjusaka saw him standing in front of her sister, she felt once again the urge to protect her. however, how much could she do when she had already chosen the side that would murder their family, just for her own survival? “leave her. she doesn’t know the secrets, she’s not a real member of the sect” she said as she turned away like she didn’t care. she couldn’t care, since the choice on tao’s life did not belong to her
tao survives this ordeal, but she never forgets what happened that day. her feelings about her sister after this point are complicated. at the same time, tao hates her for betraying their family and tao, but understands that she was also just trying to survive and in the end she did still try to help tao in her own way. tao also didn’t love the other members of their sect very much and wasn’t very sad that they died, she just thinks it’s fundamentally wrong to become a traitor in the way that manjusaka did. in the end, tao cannot decide how to feel about her sister, but she does know that she doesn’t want to see her again since she doesn’t want to face these complex feelings.
after her sister turned away, the terrifying man asked tao a simple question: “do you want to live?” her hands were shaking slightly, but she answered “yes” defiantly anyways. that is how tao was recruited into the assassin training program.
while there, she continued to excel, though of course she never reached the heights of the fabled star of the program (seven). during this time, she met a boy her age while foraging for herbs that could be used to make poison. despite the fact that they weren’t really supposed to, the two slowly became closer little by little until they were friends as the only two people around as strong as each other among the other trainees. tao liked this boy, almost as much as a brother, though for his part the boy never even admitted that they were friends
up to a point, tao could handle the training because it was not much different than her experience while the red flower sect still existed. however, at some point the intensity became much more difficult and the punishments became stricter. quietly, the resentment that had settled in her heart towards xuanwu and the killers on the day when her sister committed her betrayal started to grow. her friend was the only one who noticed, though he said nothing.
after seven “died”, the leader started pressuring their instructor to come up with the less emotional replacement he wanted. of course, it would have to be tao and her friend, as they were still the only ones at their level among the trainees. however, they happened to overhear a very important conversation between the leader and their instructor: “which is superior?” “in a practical sense, the two are equals, sir” “there is no need for both. make them fight to the death, and whoever wins will be the one to graduate”.
tao’s stomach dropped. at the same time, her blood boiled. kill her friend? no way. what have they suffered all these years to become the best assassins possible for, if they were just going to be treated as disposable enough that one could be sacrificed just to make sure that one was premium grade enough? no, she cannot deal with it not anymore. she wants to live, but this is not the life she wanted. clearly, there is no place for them here. she tries to tell her friend as much, tries to convince him to run away together. xuanwu suffocates everyone, lets go somewhere far away from here
however, her friend did not seem to share her sentiments. he called her naive and foolish, and said that the two of them fighting was a possibility that was always on the table. leave xuanwu? there is nothing i want anywhere else.
unable to agree, the two argue. tao says that he is obsessed with being their dog, and that they will one day put him down like one. her friend says that she is cowardly for not being willing to face him, either scared to die by his sword or so arrogant and sure in her victory that she did not respect his skill. eventually, tao realizes she cannot convince him. “fine then. you want to be “nine” that badly, right? then you will be.”
this is the last time she speaks to him before leaving on her own. when she disappeared that night, she did not leave a single trace behind save for one thing. a small peachwood jian charm that she used to keep on her person at all times, which she marked with the blood from a self-inflicted cut on her hand before leaving. when he found this and nothing else of her in the morning, her friend took the hint and presented the artifact as evidence that he had already “killed” her, when he had in fact done no such thing. in this way, they have both helped each other. nine gains his title with no obstacle, and tao gains her freedom without the possibility of being pursued.
the leader is convinced by this scheme flawlessly, to the point that he relays the information to manjusaka that her sister unfortunately “could not make the cut”. once again, manjusaka pretends it is not a big deal to her. however, she does hate this nine person who took that title after “killing” her sister quite a lot, for various other reasons not related to taohua of course.
uhh something something she leaves xuanwu something something she meets her cousin again who is now running an apothecary and using the name gen instead of mahua. she dyes the white parts of her hair black. something something she becomes a bodyguard to spite xuanwu and everyone who tried to raise her to be a killer. also did i mention she’s a lesbian? she’s a lesbian

Like that's why it makes me SO fucking mad. I have been on tumblr since [redacted age cause that will get me banned but it was young], the concept of selfcest does not bother me in the goddamn slightest. 7x7 drives me insane because it's just violently misinterpreting not only like the entire point of the show, but also Seven himself, and it's not even the typical "oh hurr durr I think past Seven was a violent edgy guy" which is annoying but common, it's like going to the extra fucking mile to also weirdly bastardize current Seven as like a pathetic twink who cannot do anything ever. Which I guess stems from how often he's called weak really early on in the show but he's not actually all that weak! The point is always just that he cares about people more than he wants to MURDER THEM and that's why early Seven came off as so DRASTICALLY weak, even if he was weaker than his past self, he wasn't absolutely useless. And sometimes it bothers me too cause like, Seven was mostly a kid during that past time! A kid who really didn't have a choice about his situation! I try to be nice and agree to disagree with people but sometimes it's genuinely like you had to have watched this show blind, deaf, facing away from your screen, and also strung upside down from your ceiling to get to this conclusion.
It's just such an insane misinterpretation of the show itself that makes me feel Yucky. Like, I guess like what you like, no one is under a legal obligation to sit here combing the show top to bottom like I do, but I just don't get it. I think my breaking point was when that scene in season 5 happened where he hugged his past self happened and the 7x7 shippers started running insane with it. What a beautiful scene with such deep meanings just to instantly be bastardized. Make him fuck literally any other man, I do not care, just not himself.
