Evidence I have, besides his accent, that John Oliver really did come from Britain:
- He was in seven episodes across the first two seasons of Mock the Week. He said almost no words (at least, almost no words that got broadcast) throughout all those episodes, and a significant percentage of the words he did manage to say were complaining that it’s really fucking hard to say stuff on Mock the Week that makes the final edit.
I first saw this picture in David Mitchell’s autobiography. From left to right: John Oliver, Des O’Connor (honestly, that’s some guy whose name I only know because David Mitchell named him in the caption of this picture in his autobiography), Richard Ayoade, David Mitchell. This is a picture of some guys who were in the Cambridge Footlights program together as university students.
- In an early episode of the old radio show by Russell Howard and Jon Richardson, at some point they made some joke about texting something weird to a random person from their contact list. The random person Russell Howard got was John Oliver. They both laughed about how that was the person who came up when Russell picked a random contact. They described John Oliver as a friend of Russell who was “now in the States, working on The Daily Show.” Fucking adorable.
