coolness is in the eye of the beholder. it differs from school to school let alone city to city. i think the film makes a case perhaps unintentionally of what you pointed out which is that tess doesn’t actually have a lot of friends, she’s not integrated into camp life in the same way the other characters can hang with anybody, and she collects other women to stave abandonment without have to truly be vulnerable. there are some pitfalls and plot holes sure but overall i think tess is a great mean girl archetype because she is human. there was a good julie brown tweet a few years ago where she talks about how mean girls essentially can’t be devoid of context and i think that’s very true for tess. she is the only character in the entire film of hurt and mistakes who ever apologizes to anyone.
