This is vent rather than ask because Maribug stans pissed me off than usual lately.
Maribug stans remind me alot of Stiles Teen Wolf stans. They're toxic bunch that like to victim blames other characters and also treat poc charas pretty nasty. The amount of bashing in Tumblr and fics is crazy. They also always made their fave darker bff as bad friend and aggressive despite they're not being this way in canon. Hell, there are more evidence of Marinette/Stiles being bad friend but their biased ass always bend over backwards to justified their fav behavior.
While Marinette herself is like more annoying version of Golden Girl from Super Wings. They're both have lots of power they abuse but it's okay because they have good intentions. Hell, they even get rewarded for it often.
Meanwhile Chloe and Golden Boy are also annoying troublemaker but they're more tolerable to me because they always punished at end episodes. And Golden Boy is charge for his little cousin/sister behavior which fair I guess but damn how the hell is gonna keep her from misbehaving when her power is more op than him. Tho, it's funny sometimes seeing him often (not always) acting more responsible when he's with her because while he likes chaos he likes it predictable and controlled by him instead uncontrollable chaos of his sister unstable power.
At least Golden Girl is implied to be younger than rest of the cast and a minor character. Meanwhile we can't even get an episode without her in Miraculous.
Yeah, like, a big chunk of Chloé’s likeability comes from the fact that, in the original seasons, she gets proportional, logical consequences for her actions. She cheats in a designing contest? She gets kicked out of said contest. She sabotages a cooking contest contestant? Said contestant, once Akumatized, tries to turn her into soup and she gets kicked off the jury. She and Sabrina ruin Juleka’s chance to be in the class photo? They get excluded from the actual photo. Short and sweet and logical.
But, like, the problem with Marinette is that she has, ever since the beginning, been accepting blame for things that aren’t her fault, while not getting as much as a slap on the wrist for things that ARE her fault. Like, her consequences for lying to the whole class repeatedly in ‘Heroes’ Day’? Praise. Her consequences for getting Fu found out by the villains? A promotion. Her consequences for losing all of the Miraculous to the villain because she put them up on cloud? The entirety of Paris cheering her name like she’d just defeated Hawk Moth.
I feel like a lot of fandoms have their own Marinette, a character whose pain is emphasized over everyone else, who gets forgiven by the fandom for increasingly awful things despite them never regretting their actions and everyone who opposes them is seen as the “real villain” of the show. Sometimes the show supports this kind of reading, most of the time it doesn’t. Like, I haven’t talked about this much, but the Vox standom for Hazbin Hotel is scarily similar to the Marinette standom, except the actual series doesn’t support the reading that Vox is a poor woobie being bullied by the mean and cruel Alastor. Vox is the one who started shit first. If he gets hit, that’s his fault.
I wish I could just enjoy Vox’s character but his apologists sound way too much like Marinette's for my comfort. They're literally inventing stuff so that they can claim anything negative about Vox applies more to another character, most often Alastor or Lucifer.
Vox literally has narcissism-based superpowers (the actual clinical narcissism as in his self-perception/power level is dependent on others' approval), but people claim Alastor is a pop psychology narcissist instead (he’s mean and self-centered). He spends season 2 committing various microaggressions and his songs have nods to historical white supremacists movements, but more people post their headcanons about how Lucifer's No Boys Allowed-esque sign telling Alastor to stay out of his room/personal space is actually Lucifer purposefully trying to remind Alastor of the way his community was ostracised from public spaces while he was alive. Vox's human name is Vincent Whittman, literally “White Man” but now we have a new wave of people so insistent that Lucifer is, in fact, the whitest of white men who ever existed, that they go onto posts headcanoning otherwise to say so.
