with characters like tsurumi that are demonstrated to be capable of such unreal levels of violence and evil with no remorse whatsoever, sometimes giving them a tragic backstory can weaken the blow that the character had before by overriding feelings of fear and indignation with some level of sympathy or understanding. however, in something that i haven't seen executed in any media as well as it is done in golden kamuy, once you learn about tsurumi's backstory he goes from menacing to genuinely fucking terrifying.
i think it might be the leads we were given on tsurumi beforehand - textual comparisons to the devil and a god of death, an underlying feeling that everything he does must have some cunning edge to it. he feels unreal; an enigmatic force with witty characterization and just enough smarts to keep the protagonists on their toes rather than a character of his own. it's as the story progresses and we flit between points in his life that we pick up the scraps of personhood and history that he left behind, that we come to the slow realization that tsurumi isn't a flat caricature of a villain. he isn't comically evil with no true motive outside of that. he isn't even the devil.
he's a man. he's a man with remarkable power that has devoted his life to imperialism and specifically tearing apart an entire ethnic group due to his own personal injury. his grief is what makes him terrifying. it is so very real but it is so MONSTROUS, it's a grief that we as the readers can understand but NEVER sympathize with due to the bodies it left in its wake. after pages upon pages of playing along with and finding amusement in tsurumi's cartoonish antics, the most horrifying reveal is that he is nothing more than a gaping wound.

Olruggio: I specialize in fire magic due to its practical applications as a light source, a heat source, and a way to fend off predators. My signature spells are all about making people feel safe or comfortable, which I suppose could be read as symbolic of my larger character motivations.
Qifrey: I specialize in water magic because I fucking hate it.
Spoilers for later chapters of Witch Hat Atelier incoming
I just realized that Olly has no memory of why Qifrey swapped their tassles so for him its just a cute symbol of their friendship? That he kept for all of their life from that point onward even though he has no context or additional information?
He was just like "Why did you switch- ah you know what? Nevermind. I love you too. Let's wear it like this from now onwards as a symbol of our commitment to each other I guess."
Meanwhile Qifrey:
"I MUST NEVER FORGET"

Usami is so unsettling and straight up bonkers he almost comes full circle and ends up being likeable again
(I wouldn't want to meet him in real life tho he can stay completely fictional thank you very much)

Thinking about Ogata really messes me up.
He literally works on two completely contrary believes that make up his character.
On the one hand he's always trying to prove to himself and other people that bloodlines do NOT matter and that him being born to a Geisha out of a loveless relationship doesn't have anything to do with him being messed up.
On the other hand he is trying to cling to the fact that his bloodline IS in fact the thing that made him so messed up. He wants to believe that he cannot help it, he never had a chance to be happy and he's not responsible for how his life turned out to be.
The more messed up he becomes the more he has to cling to him just "lacking something" because otherwise it would mean that he COULD have been happy and it's just because of the decisions he chose to make over and over again that his life turned out this way
But also he NEEDS to prove that it's not his bloodline or the way he was born, everyone has the capability for becoming so messed up because otherwise his existence would immediately be worth less (in his messed up mind) and his father (and everyone else who prefers Yuusaku) would be proven right.
And it gets even more complicated because he isn't even all that messed up. At least not in a way that was unavoidable.
At first he was just a neglected child who wanted his mother to pay attention to him and he DOES feel guilt over her death and he DID hold affection for her as he does for Yuusaku who he calls out to in his nightmares and sees in Asripa who is the first person since his half-brother to treat him with kindness. The connection drives him nuts because it confronts him with the knowledge that Yuusaku's death haunts him which forces him to think about wether he really is as messed up and irredeemable as he likes to think and I'm convinced Asripa's death would have haunted him too in some way.
He had so many chances and yet always chose the worst possible option since he HAS to believe that there was never a way for him to be happy since otherwise all his misery would've been self-inflicted and his own responsibility.
You can literally see him breaking apart at the seams the more the story progresses because his conflicting beliefs about himself clash more and more. I think it's so hard to grasp his motives because Ogata just keeps on lying to himself. He would make the most amazing unreliable narrator because he's so convincing with it too!
Half the time WE as the audience also believe that he is messep up beyond saving, that he doesn't feel guilt over anything or anyone and then
(Light spoiler)
Incidentally, I think that Usami is probably a fairly normal seeming guy when he’s not around his inner circle. Polite and respectful even. It’s what the few interactions we have of him with others seem to suggest at least. And Tsurumi picked him to go undercover in Abashiri prison. Not Tsukishima, who was undercover in Vladivostok with him. And while we know that Inudou was particularly violent and cruel, Usami is… well Usami.
Lol for real
When he talked to the "prostitute" (Kadokura) in front of the beer factory he was hella polite. He was like "Are you okay? Be careful not to trip it's really dangerous!" and even lit up a match for the supposed prostitute.
(Of course he went totally of the rails as soon as he realized it was Kadokura but it was nice while it lasted)
If you didn't know about Usami you'd be like "Oh my, what a polite gentleman!" meanwhile that gentleman is one of the most unhinged people out of a broad cast of already very VERY unhinged characters
it's fucking hilarious especially if you consider that he had the most normal and loving childhood you could possibly have so he just IS like that and it keeps sending me
Big fan of how Kirawus just decided to tag along.
He was like "Hey I'm kinda vibing with this guy who peeks at assholes! I'm gonna hang around I guess."
How can anyone hate Junji Ito
I love when you recognize junji ito’s style and you read on not knowing if it’s going to be horrific or just cute cat stuff

Golden Kamuy characters are all so fucking unique and memorable.
It's been a long time since a piece of media has made me care for such a large cast of characters. I normally struggle with the story as soon as too many people get introduced since I tend to just get pissed because the main characters don't get as much screentime any more and they're the people I care about most.
But with Golden Kamuy I'll have no trouble watching a whole episode that doesn't feature the protagonists even for a second. Not because I don't like them but because I genuinly want to know why this newly introduced person is a fucking weirdo so I can fall in love with them.
There's not a single character I don't enjoy and I genuinely think Lt. Tsurumi is one of the greatest villains ever written he is a fucking monster but he's so unhinged and weirdly charming it's almost like his manipulation breaks the fourth wall and sucks you in as well.
Don't even get me started on the main characters I adore Sugimoto and Asripa so so much! And Shiraishi is a goof but he genuinely warms my heart with how much he came to care about them.
I just really really love this show and I implore you all to give it a chance it's such a gold mine!
