I have never heard of somebody with less taste. Richard Strauss was a master of composition and Cui was too insecure to see that.

Cèsar Cui was one of the most outspoken critics Rachmaninoff’s first symphony. He literally bullied the man until he was depressed. And I don’t care if he wasn’t the only one, he was a major part of the problem.
