I think it’s valid to criticize academia as a hierarchical institution with a near monopoly on specialized knowledge. It’s not valid to say reading books or using polysyllabic words is bad.

There is a problem among academics in which those who are not particularly capable with the written word seem to think that they can compensate for this fact by writing long overcomplicated sentences instead of a number of short clear sentences. These certain people seem to conflate overwrought linguistic structure with the expression of complex ideas in their attempt to make their language and its content seem impressive. They also tend to use less common words where more common words will do just as well if not better. The point of academic writing is to clearly express the ideas you’re trying to convey. You’re not writing a Thomas Pynchon novel. We shouldn’t have to spend time discerning your meaning. Just directly transfer the content from the page through my eyes into my brain. You should use whatever jargon is particular to your field, but very rarely should the uninitiated be unable to learn from context what the jargon means. If you’re not capable of conveying complex ideas in clear simple sentences and making your point clear to people who have not studied your particular niche, you maybe should do something different because you’re not a very good academic. If we didn’t have so many academics writing so poorly we wouldn’t have so many people criticizing our word choice because they wouldn’t notice our word choice because they would be learning new words instead. Maybe they’d be more inclined to read our books if there weren’t so many of us creating an artificial barrier to entry in order to inflate the import of our content or our language.

one of my favorite tumblr specific idiosynacricies is when someone asks your opinion on a certain piece of media/celebrity and you go “i’m not really interested and i don’t know much about them” then you get an ask that says “well they’re deeply problematic and evil so don’t get into it” and you go oh ok and then someone ELSE goes “that anon was lying they’re a progressive perfect person” and you go oh… ok and they bicker back and forth with you being entirely uninterested until you start getting anons from a new genre going “wait what did x do?” and you suddenly become the PR person for a show or actor you didn’t even know existed in the first place

What we seem to be learning today is that we don’t need to publish everything any random person might have to say to us.

Wavelength is a physical property, but color is a psychophysical property. Any color you see, including magenta, is as real as any other color because if nobody is perceiving the light it doesn’t have any color even though it still has a wavelength. All colors only exist in the mind of the person perceiving them.

Meth is sometimes, though rarely, prescribed for ADHD. Adderall and meth do similar things to similar systems in the brain. The fact that they’re one atom different, in this particular case, means that they have very similar effects and side effects. This doesn’t mean that either meth or adderall are bad for people who need to take them as prescribed by a competent psychiatrist. But there is a big problem with people who do not need to be taking adderall taking it recreationally, which is not a good thing because it is in fact very similar to taking meth recreationally. Which I think is the point of the image.

No author is entitled to comments, to interaction, to reblogs or likes or reviews or anything, but in a community where you’re essentially a bunch of indie writers, that’s the lifeblood that keeps people *posting*. Writing doesn’t necessarily stop, but when someone feels like no one gives a shit whether you’re sharing or not, you quit sharing.

People support content they care about. There’s not a problem of people not supporting content. If people don’t support your content it means that they don’t care deeply enough about your content to support it. That’s how it works. If you don’t feel supported you have a few options, make people care more about your content, don’t post it, or stop caring about being supported and post it anyway. Whatever you choose it doesn’t matter. It’s not at all important to be supported by a community of people on the internet who consume your content.
