Did you know you can combine your Photovoltaic system with your Thermal solar system? This is especially important if you want to power your house and heat your pool but have limited roof space. Your Thermal solar system is layered underneath your PV system and uses the excess heat from the PV panels. Although photovoltaic cells suffer from a drop in efficiency with the rise in temperature, PVT systems are engineered to carry heat away from the PV cells thereby cooling the cells and improving efficiency for both systems. The recipients of the DOE’s investment include: Austin Energy, Carnegie Mellon University, Commonwealth Edison Company, Electrical Power Research Institute, Fraunhofer USA Center for Sustainable Energy Systems & Hawaiian Electric Company. These 6 projects will either be led by a utility company or include a utility company as a key partner.   With tesla's Powerwall and this investment from the DOE, it looks like we will see some exciting stuff happen with energy storage in the near future.

The Southern California town of Holtville, has made plans with the Australian tech company who created the world's first-ever floating solar plant, to bring their tech to the U.S. They plan to create a 1 megawatt floating plant to save precious farmland space. By doing so, the solar plant will produce up to 20% more power than a land-based system and also benefit the water supply. "Along with power production, the system will also reduce water evaporation and improve water quality by reducing the need for chemical treatment use – through simply shading the surface of the water."

Today we start our first installation using Quick Mount PV's rail-free mounting system on this house in Redondo Beach.
