The "invention factory" he established in Menlo Park, New Jersey, in 1876 generated major innovations such as the phonograph, the X-ray machine, and the movie projector. But Edison's most important achievement was the first viable electric lightbulb, using a carbon filament, from which he moved rapidly into electric power generation; his first power station started up in Lower Manhattan in 1882.
