Behind the GLOBAL CITIZEN Festival
India went crazy with the recent Global Citizen festival held in Mumbai. Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, International Celebrities Jay Z, Demi Lovato & ColdPlay made appearances and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi was live through Video Conference.
The glitz and glamour aside, the Global Citizen represents a social platform for the global generation to solve the world’s biggest challenges. Engaging the global community, it serves to push the world’s leaders to take initiatives. To put it in numbers, the collective actions have resulted in 130 commitments and policy announcements from leaders, including financial aid valued at over $25.6 billion that is set to affect the lives of 656 million people.
Amazing!! But how does it work?
The Global Citizen Festival is probably the most unique music festival ever. Attendees earn tickets rather than buying them,by taking actions to help solve the world’s biggest problems. In the three months leading up to the festival, Global Citizens made videos denouncing sexist laws, visited libraries to advocate for refugee education, called politicians to demand increased funding for polio, and so much more. Petitions were signed, tweets were sent, the Global Citizen community grew, and impact was measured.
The areas of impact are Health, Education, Finance & Innovation, Water & Sanitation, Girls & Women issues and many more. The Goals are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals announced by the United Nations to rid the world from poverty by 2030.
Notable impacts:
In 2015, The Netherlands committed to improve sanitation for 50 million people and to bring clean water to 30 million people.
At the 2014 festival, the World Bank committed $15 billion to improve global water and sanitation. More than 50,000 actions — emails and tweets — were taken by Global Citizens and the World Bank confirmed that $6 billion has been disbursed, reaching 100 million people.
Rihanna spurred France to get more involved in the fund and Queen Rania of Jordan announced that $42 million will be disbursed by the fund in 2017, affecting 1.5 million children over two years.
