Pantene is kind of on a roll with these ads and I for one, am definitely on board! Isn't it strange how men and women are programmed to react in such different ways and how deeply ingrained this programming is? I love that Pantene chose to shine a spot light on some of these differences.
Although Chargrilled T-shirts prides itself on funny, tongue in cheek, offensive t-shirts, I think this might have been taken a little too far. Particularly in todays culture of children growing up much faster than they should due to exposure to sex, drugs and violence through TV, video games and general free access to information. The magazine ad, was eventually pulled due to complaints
Interesting video that compiles ways in which advertising portrayed women in 2013

This pantene add is fantastic in how it challenges gender stereotypes in the work place

Fashion Disconnect?
These models were photoshopped to be the size of the figures in fashion sketches. Is this a sign of how disconnected the fashion industry is with the lay person?
Men in Skirts
I started looking into the idea of men wearing clothing is decidedly feminine, I thought it would be interesting to look into skirts. Since in recent years they have been included in menswear shows and street style has obviously embraced them. It is strange though because the idea of men wearing skirts has an historical context that a lot of people seem to not consider when making comments or passing judgement on those who do choose to wear skirts.

I found this article on the Victoria and Albert website which I found very interesting in regards to the re introduction of the skirt into menswear
What are steroids anyways?
"Anabolic steroids are prescription-only medicines that are sometimes taken illegally to increase muscle mass and athletic performance. If used in this way, they can cause serious side effects and addiction.Â
Anabolic steroids are manufactured drugs that mimic the effects of the male hormone testosterone. They have limited medical uses and are not to be confused withcorticosteroids, a different type of steroid drug commonly prescribed for a variety of conditions."

Bigger Faster Stronger
Is a documentary about 2 brothers, one who uses steroids and another who does not. It highlights their physical differences and what steroids do to the body as well as their appeal.
Body Dysmorphic Disorder
"Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), or body dysmorphia, is an anxiety disorder that causes sufferers to spend a lot of time worrying about their appearance and to have a distorted view of how they look.
For example, they may be convinced that a barely visible scar is a major flaw that everyone is staring at, or that their nose looks abnormal.Â
Having BDD does not mean the person is vain or self-obsessed.
When does low confidence turn into BDD?
Almost everyone feels unhappy about the way they look at some point in their life, but these thoughts usually come and go and can be forgotten.
However, for someone with BDD, the thought of a flaw is very distressing and does not go away.
The person believes they are ugly or defective and that others perceive them in this way, despite reassurances from others about their appearance.
BDD can lead to depression and even thoughts of suicide."

I started exploring the idea that perception and mental capacity have a lot more to do with identity and the way that a person looks or feels than we would realize. Because my article and magazine is male orientated, I thought it best to start exploring imagery such as those that I found below.

Dove Advertising Campaign
A different take to sizes, shapes and colors that we are used too.
All Walks
I think what I loved was how well received "Snapped" was at the National Portrait Gallery. I also loved how each of the portraits was paired with a woman in history who they thought mirrored the models personality

Positive Changes
On a more positive note, this Indian television advertisement for jewelry features a population that is often forgotten or shunned in Indian society; divorced women. It's actually quite cute.Â
Blurred Lined Feminist Parody
Although I agree with the reasoning behind making this parody, I don't think that these women should have made a video if they were so uncomfortable. It also doesn't quite make sense that their lyrics are all about equality and empowering and yet they are objectifying the men just as the women in the original video were objectified. It seems a little hypocritical to preach from the pulpit so to speak and then turn around and do the exact same thing. It also seems contradictory to put themselves in a situation they are so obviously uncomfortable in to prove a point although they do not do it very well since they have just reversed the roles. The message is slightly lost, I think.Â
Blurred Lines Parody
I'm not usually a fan of parodies but I think this one definitely hit the nail on the head in terms of the creepy undertones that the original song and video have.Â

Some of the many disturbing images that I have found of men with anorexia. These were in an article about the underrepresentation of men in studies and surveys in regards to eating disorders.
BBC Switch - Manorexia
http://www.bbc.co.uk/switch/videos/c9feca8.shtml
This is a little snippet about boys in the UK and what their perceptions of what they feel like they should look like. It gives a little insight into the mind of someone who has suffered from an eating disorder, particularly with anorexia.Â
