against my better judgment I'm becoming entranced by video essays that claim to be talking about really pervasive pressing issues that are everywhere ๐ฑ that turn out to be about some shit you've never heard of in your life if you're not on tiktok or insta
and it's like. it's not that I don't think it's worthwhile to critically examine niche subcommunity issues. the analysis can be incredibly thought and insightful! but I do also feel that lending too much credence to things that bother you in internet bubbles can turn you into, like, the person On Here who sincerely told me that I was being naive for believing that tiktok romances aren't causing complete downfall of the entire publishing industry
"everyone is reading the same books and wearing the same clothes and buying whatever the algorithm tells them to buy, personal taste is dead!" I think maybe you need to like. talk to some people on the bus.

What is your age modulo your birth month?

11
For anyone who doesn't know, this means the remainder when you divide your age by your birth month. For example, I'm 28 and was born in December, and 12 goes into 28 twice with remainder 4, so my answer is 4!
If you're wondering what I'm hoping to find out... I don't know! I just want to make people do maths unnecessarily.
assuming birth months are distributed equally over the 12 months (they're not) and that birth year modulo month forms a uniform distribution (it doesn't), then the probability of answer N should be the sum of 1/(12i) for i from N+1 to 12 (letting i be a potential birth month, if i<=N then option N cannot be picked, otherwise it will be picked with chance 1/i. the chance i itself is the correct month is 1/12)
thus the probabilities should be
answer 0 = 25.86%
answer 1 = 17.526%
answer 2 = 13.36%
answer 3 = 10.58%
answer 4 = 8.50%
answer 6 = 5.44%
answer 7 = 4.25%
answer 8 = 3.21%
answer 8 = 3.21%
answer 9 = 1.2.28%
answer 10 = 1.45%
answer 11 = 0.69%
also, if we want an approximate shape of the distribution ( @identifying-poll-distributions ), we have that
P[N] = sum_(i=N+1)^(12) 1/(12i) = 1/12 (sum_(i=0)^(12) 1/i - sum_(i=0)^(N) 1/i) = 1/12 (H_12 - H_N) โ 1/12 (ln(12) - ln(N))
(H_i being the i'th harmonic number)
the approximation doesn't hold very well for small numbers like these (like, answer 5 is predicted to be 7.28% which is almost a whole % off)
no idea if this distribution has any name. probably something stupid like 12-complementary inverse negalogarithmic distribution
we still have a rather small sample size, so I wouldn't be quite so certain about the accuracy being awful, but I'm excited to see how this one ends!
where does your romantic/sexual preference in people lean?

were you here when polls were new and only a few people had them but you could share the power with others
no bc I have never heard of that?? I guess it makes sense to do a slow rollout but that's strange, I had assumed they were always an integral part of the website

Shape: Bimodal, Roughly Symmetrical
Center: Likely at "At"
Also, quick biology note: this is what disruptive selection looks like! obviously, the graph itself can be rearranged and the shape would not be consistent, but it IS interesting that we have modes on the two extremes, which is what happens in disruptive selection.
When I was taking bio, we thought about height as more of a bell curve shape, being polygenic as it is, so this is pretty interesting โ I assume it's because, rather than numerically, we're being asked to describe height relativistically, which would be more likely to lead to a shape like this; additionally, the sample population is also probably biased lol
Still, if anyone has any thoughts on this, please let me know! I'm curious as to why its shaped like this, instead of having a peak at "At"
this is definitely a normal curve! just a misleading depiction!
according to a brief google search, the standard deviation of the heights of americans is 3 inches (some listed it as 2.5 inches for women). if we round to the nearest inch, we find the following results:
for men or* for women, assuming standard deviation=3", P(<ฮผ-.5)โ43%, P(ฮผยฑ.5)โ13%, P(>ฮผ+.5)โ43%
for women, assuming standard deviation=2.5", P(<ฮผ-.5)โ42%, P(ฮผยฑ.5)โ16%, P(>ฮผ+.5)โ42%
I don't feel like doing an actual statistical test/hypothesis to see if our results are reasonable, but I figure that the deviation from the ideal results, if not attributable to chance, could be due to the wording of the question (i.e. it does not account for transgender or intersex people) or due to lifestyle factors more common among tumblr users.
(another google search suggested that gay people (most of tumblr's userbase) may be shorter than heterosexuals, but I didn't investigate the veracity of those papers so this may be a non-issue.)
*if the standard deviation is unchanged, the probability of a value relative to the mean will also be unchanged. you're just sliding the normal curve around, not stretching it. of course, the probability of an absolute value will change.
