Video Experiment - 5/8/19 11:49am
Project 2 Final Iteration - 5/7/19Ā 9:14pm
After the prototype section, I decided to change various parts of my project before testing it out. I changed the pictures of one of my flyers, the saving trees flyer, and used an image that I thought was more impactful.Ā
For my digital aid, I received feedback that it might take too long to type in the type of trash the user is throwing out, so I changed it so that the site had pictures of different types of waste, and the user would only have to identify which waste they have with a picture and press one key to learn where to throw it in. This way it would be quicker and more efficient.Ā
I then tested out these variables from 5/3 - 5/5 for about 3 days to see which combination of variables produced better results. On one floor, I distributed the negative reinforcing posters all over the floor and used basic paper signs on top of the recycling, compost, and trash bins. On the second floor, I distributed the positive reinforcing posters all over the floors and continued to use the recycling, composting, and trash bin paper signs. On the third and final floor, along with theĀ recycling, composting, and trash bin paper signs, I also left my laptop next to the pins with my site to add a digital aid for residents to use.Ā Ā
After the three days passed, I went to the bins, recorded how much each bin was approximately filled, and went to each dorm from all 3 floors to ask survey questions of how the different variables affected the way they distributed trash.Ā Ā
After taking in my data, I found out that a combination of negative reinforcement and digital aid created the best outcome in how people distribute their waste. I combined my digital aid with my negative reinforcing posters by keeping my digital aid website and creating a screensaver of all my negative reinforcing flyers so that they would be shown when the digital aid was not being used.Ā
Here is a play through of the final product.Ā
There are still things that can definitely be improved on this product, like converting this onto a touch screen device, and I hope to continue improving on this project. Ā Ā

Week 13 Constant Output/Input Choreo - 5/1/19 3:52pm
Continuing on with my staged piece, I cleaned it and made several changes until bringing it to our dance competition. This was our tech run before our final run. I will be posting the final run through once the official video is out, marking the end of my first choreographed set.Ā
Week 12 Constant Output/Input Choreo - 4/24/19 12:26pm
We took our choreo and staged the entire piece, planning the formations, made varieties within our choreo, and changed parts to fit the dance overall.

Project 2 Prototype -Ā 4/24/19 12:14pm
After hearing the feedback from my presentation, I decided to change the direction of my project. Instead of focusing on inattentional blindness, I decided to focus on the way information about composting, recycling, and composting is presented. Iām going to test whether positive facts or guilt-tripping facts about waste distribution affect how people distribute their waste by using the flyers I made above.Ā
On one floor of my dorm, Iāll only have the flyers with positive messages, and on another floor, Iāll only have the flyers with guilt-tripping messages.Ā
Iām also creating this program that informs users if their waste is supposed to be recycled, composted, or landfilled. Iām going to run this program on a laptop next the bins on a new floor to see if helps people who donāt know how to separate their wastes and to see if itās useful. In this test, Iām testing whether digital interaction increases the behavior of separating waste more than static information from signs and flyers.
The program still needs some fine-tuning, so Iāll be working on it so that it works on laptops and phones.Ā
Lecture/Talk Response: Storytelling withĀ Umakanth Thumrugoti - 4/17/19 5:00pm
I attended a talk about the different tools of storytelling by Umakanth Thumrugoti, a storyboard artist from Disney. He talked about how people go about creating a Disney animated filmās story, starting from ideas to storyboard prototypes and constant revision before itās approved and the animating team starts to animate it. One of the most important things he mentioned that stuck with me is the use of characters. A good story needs good developed characters that people can relate or empathize with. Although this topic may seem unrelated to my project, I decided to take this knowledge from this talk to make sure I created a story within each of my flyers whether it was negatively reinforcing or positively reinforcing with the images I chose. I tried to make sure there was a character (human or other live being) aspect that people could relate and empathize with to create an impactful message for onlookers so that these flyers would stand out more from other dull instructional flyers that are often found on dorm floors. In the future if I want to go further in developing these negatively reinforcing or positively reinforcing messages, I could create a short video with a story to influence others to distribute waste properly. In this process, I would take Thumrugotiās process of creating a storyboard and developing a character within the film to make sure the point of how distribution of waste is important gets delivered correctly to the audience.

Reading Response: Speculative Everything, Chapters 1 and 2 - 4/17/19 12:31pm
This reading discusses how overtime in history, weāve begun to use design to fulfill our hopes instead of our dreams or creativity, and I completely agree with this point. Upon realizing that weāre running out of resources on Earth, realizing that weāre overpopulating in some areas, realizing the effects of global warming, and etc, weāve begun to shift our focus to help fix these problems and to āhopeā to mitigate these issues. Is this a bad thing? No, definitely not; in fact, I think itās necessary and just as important as designing for our dreams, because if we donāt find ways to preserve our environment and our overall lifestyle, we wonāt have the resources in the future to even fuel our dreams and imagination. As someone who also prefers to design off of my imagination instead of hopes, I do recognize that itās these designs for āhopeā that helped me be able to become the designer I am today. After reading these chapters, I believe that āhopeā and ādreamsā work off each other, one canāt exist without the others, and that innovative designers are needed for both of these fields in order for humanityās life to continue, evolve, and stay interesting.

Reading Response: Why customers donāt read signs - 4/2/19 9:36pm
In this article, Toister describes why people in a situation wouldnāt recycle even though there were two different bins for trash and recycling and a sign that indicated the recycling bin. He describes āinattentional blindnessā in which normally obvious things disappear from our attention and sight. I thought it was interesting that the placement of these bins really affected the way we perceived them because if I imagine myself in the situation he describes where the two bins were identical and the recycling bin was closer, I would also automatically just throw away all my trash in there without even glancing at the sign. I agree with him that in this setup, the sign would be pretty much useless. There needs to be a much clearer and bigger indication that the two bins hold different usages to outsiders. After reading this article, Iāve decided to focus on 3 factors for my project: the look of the bins, the different placement of the bins, and how the signs are portrayed, to see how they affect whether or not someone recycles, composts, and separates their trash. I felt that these are the big three factors that determine how we react to the trash system, and I can experiment with these to see what combinations work the best.
