Here's some fun pride fact about your favorite gamebug, Spannella! She's meant to be intersex-coded. In the lore of Gone Indie, Addisons are born genderless at birth but despite this, Spannella was born female. She also breaks what's considered a "standard" for Darkners, having a bit of determination and not having been made with Lightner's interference. It's also part of her neurodivergent-coding but hey, that's the fun part about writting!
Trying to find takes that portray both characters in a positive light is a rare sight because Toby Fox can call them intentionally similar characters who mutually enhance each other and yet most takes I see will have at least one character be painted in such a negative light. And look, we all have our own opinions and interpretations (as long as they don't come off as hateful towards certain minorities). Ones we can discuss in a civil manner but I refuse to have my own opinion and interpretation be seen as lesser just because I don't agree with the notion that Tenna is the worse of the two.
Are my opinions and interpretations perfect? No, of course not. I'm not Toby Fox. I can admit though when I was wrong in my assumptions. I may not be as skilled in my critical skills or as motivated as everyone else but I am extremely hyperfixated about these characters and care about them deeply! I do not view them as saints, I accept their flaws but I will protest when I don't agree with certain takes on Tenna. I am passionate about this character. And if you don't want me to do that? Just tell me not to. I am terrible at social skills and I would appreciate people just telling me outright they don't want to hear my opinions, instead of getting into a situation I feel like could've been easily avoided if someone just told me I wasn't invited into this discussion.
How was Tenna able to convince the entire fanbase that one of his most harmful coping mechanism is just a silly quirk? He has mastered the skill of masking, I need to learn his crafts.
It's so weird seeing neurotypical Tenna. Like I forget so many people don't see him as neurodivergent and they don't have to but whenever I see Tenna's portrayals without his neurodivergent traits, I'm just like..

Okay okay, I have to talk about this because I just realised how much religious subtext is packed with these characters and I couldn't resist at least bringing this up. But what is the Book of Job? For those who don't know, the Book of Job is one of the Books of the Old Testament and was basically an explanation as to why suffering exists if God is an omnipresent being. It was also a lesson as to how trusting in God despite the horrible situation you are in will grant you a happy ending. Though Spamton's situation proves the exact opposite of this message, that suffering at the hands of an omnipresent being and still trying to get in their good graces doesn't get you a happy ending. And with that out of the way, let's get to the meat and bones of this analysis? Discussion? An unprofessional yap session? Whatever it is, let's get on with it.
To summarise the Book of Job, we gave our main character: Job. He is a wealthy individual with ten children. He was a devoted follower of God but The Adversary challenges his faith to God, claiming he only is so devoted because he has it good. So God takes away his possessions, his children and his health. Despite this cruelty, Job stays faithful and so he's rewarded with twice as much of everything he lost. That's the basic explanation of it, there's definitely more to it but that's all we need for this discussion.
So let's start with the obvious one, just like Job Spamton loses everything to a powerful being who he was devoted to. We don't know exactly why Spamton got punished so severely after signing Tenna's deal but seeing as he got pale only AFTER the phone said something to him, we can conclude that Spamton didn't break any sort of contract or agreement he had with the Benefactor. Or maybe Spamton wasn't afraid of being cut off by the Benefactor? Whatever was the case, the Benefactor saw Spamton signing the deal as going against them and so Spamton lost everything. But I want to look closely at what Job lost specifically: his wealth, his children and his health.
Wealth is an obvious one, Spamton lost all he had. He lost his sales, his possessions and all his money. His Health is also a fairly easy conclusion to come to, Spamton was turned into a puppet and had his speech degraded. But children? Where did we hear that one before...
(Images not working for now. I don't know what's wrong but when it's fix then I post one here)
This is a point I don't hear people talk about: what children? We only have one “character” who fits that description but our lovely duo mentions more than one child so what is that about? Well, since it is weird how we don't see them, I don't think they're talking about physical children but more so metaphorical children. Something they made together. And there is evidence to point at Spamton being involved in the production of TV Time.
(Another image not working :( )
But I feel like the most important thing in this comparison is how both Spamton and Job both stay faithful to their religion. Spamton, despite being screwed over by this powerful being never blames them and still believes in the whole Heaven stuff. He still has faith, he still has belief. But unlike Job, he doesn't get rewarded. The “Heaven” never answers his call. Believing doesn't get him anywhere, it's putting trust in others that does change his fate. It's trying to do better despite the horrible circumstances. He doesn't get rewarded for blind faith in forces that never cared for him, he gets rewarded from ordinary people that do care for him.
Being forced to sit in the religion classes finally paid off, now I can analyse the yaoi by their religious trauma and how it affects them. Watch me compare the Book of Job with Spamton's story.
Since I am feeling a bit better I should probably emphasise that nothing bad actually happened. I wasn't called by any names and nobody did anything bad against me. I was simply (and still am) overloaded by an unpredictable situation and felt guilt over it because I honestly shouldn't be upset about a situation that was literally nothing. I honestly feel embarrassed how I handled it, I'm usually more mature about it.
But because my mind can't just shut up for once, I've gotta ask: should I actually stop with serious discussions (like analysis on characters and personal opinions on subjects)?
I sometimes need to remember to shut up. I yap too much, I should yap less. Especially if I have no substance to my yaps. I'm sorry if I did anything to make anyone upset with my yaps. I'm terrible with words. I try to make more silly yaoi instead, no more serious discussions. I'm just not qualified for them.
Speaking of which, do you think Spamton and Tenna be the type of partners who make their sandwiches with a little face on them for one another?
Warning: the following AU contains topics in which characters who are alluded to or coded as trans, achillean, neurodivergent and disabled go through process meant to suppress traits in relation to said identities or/and make them feel horrible for having them. Please proceed with caution.
I'm still trying to flesh out this AU but the basis of it is that instead of punishing Spamton for the deal, the Benefactor uses this opportunity to further their control and to knock the duo down a peg. Just like promised, Tenna gets ahold of the Big Shot secret and Spamton becomes TV Times newest co-host! They were even given a ring to seal the deal!
Soon enough, the Benefactor started to make calls to Tenna, via his head, to instruct him on how to get the attention from one of his Lightner: Toriel. He's told to make a new identity for himself, one that will appeal to her and so Mrs Cathy was born! The host of the Infomercials for struggling mothers.
Mrs. Cathy was a success and yet Tenna didn't feel.. comfortable with this new identity. It just didn't feel right but Toriel and everyone else seemed to like it so maybe he could get used to it. The Benefactor would give them some more instruction, like setting up an email adress so Toriel could have a way to buy their products! They weren't sure how that worked exactly but they learn not to question the person on the other side of the phone. Besides things were looking up for them! They were Big after all!
So Tenna ignored how awful this identity made him feel, how it felt so different from the one he made for himself. How the ring would shock him everytime he did something he shouldn't have. How he was losing so much of himself and Spamton, he felt so restricted. They weren't the one calling the shots! They weren't free! The phone told him it was all his fault. That Spamton wanted this and should be proud for all they've done for him. If there was someone to blame for his and Tenna's misery, it was Spamton. It was him, him, him, him, him.
(Feel free to ask me more about this AU or clarify something down bellow)

What if I made a really dark Spamtenna AU that was inspired by heteronormativity present in Spamtenna artwork, demonization of Spamton's character and Tenna's internalized bigotry as well as objectification?
When you see an amazing take on Spamton but then halfway through they take away Spamton's agency in the deal and make Tenna out to be a bad boyfriend.
The reasons as to why I dislike the "Tenna forced Spamton to sign the contract" is that it kinda takes away the nuance these two have. They're both flawed men but they loved each other deeply to the point that they were angry at each other for not being there. I heavily dislike reducing a complex situation into a "it was everyone's fault but this one character".
Hey so, can we talk about how two members of Spamton's family are doomed to death? Tenna with the prophecy orchestrating his death and the post on Noelle's blog about discarding eggs from "Incompatible pets"? Meanwhile Spamton is forced to suffer all alone with said knowledge. I guess Spamton is just Gaster's favorite character with how he's willing to put Tenna and the baby in the Fridge /j
Absolutely... A big part of Tenna’s character is being repressed in many aspects, including his sexual identity (not just being queer but seemingly having desire at all when he’s in the house of a puritan woman & under parental controls/censorship). It’s a really smart way to write the embodiment of an old TV from an era where the rules of what could be shown on television were much stricter due to the impact of the Hays Code, and these sorts of things could mostly only be subtly implied (that, or queer characters had to unambiguously be villains or get tragic endings — which is also sort of what the prophecy seemingly intended… hmm).
There’s several posts that are relevant to this subject if anyone’s interested! This post by dellerose goes into Tenna having — at least subtextual — internalized homophobia in relation to the Hays Code more in depth; I go into the ways Tenna’s coded as a closeted gay man in my reblog of this post; and this post by @moskvishacreates with contributions from @maybe-a-gatto-or-a-catto talks about how queerphobia is very relevant to the Weird Route & spamtenna, as well as how queer love seems to represent true freedom in Deltarune.
I also think it actually is sort of implied that Christianity may exist in the game as an alternative to the Delta Rune religion, and there are implications that homophobia & transphobia do exist (to a lesser extent) even in Hometown, as well as certain gender roles, sexism, and fantastical racism for sure. Deltarune is certainly not a world without any bigotry or bias. I’ll go into the reasons I believe this under the cut…
There are no sins in the Delta Rune religion, yet Toriel is clearly sexually puritanical, making the whole family go to church every day for a week after Asriel has his first kiss, keeping all students at a distance from each other even at the school dance, and seemingly not allowing her family to watch even mildly suggestive music videos; Asriel is influenced by these views as well — he literally used to go to confession with Alvin to tell him his “sins,” despite confession also not existing in this religion. Noelle at one point says “cheezus,” and Susie specifically (no other characters say this) uses the term “jeez” fairly often, which only exists because it’s a diminutive of Jesus; she’s also seemingly one of the only characters in the game to have grown up outside of Hometown, likely around other religions. The church in Hometown even looks like it’s modeled after a catholic church. This all indicates to me that it’s quite possible Christianity exists in this universe, and is just not the religion most monsters subscribe to — but that doesn’t mean those views don’t influence them at all, especially when they consume human media.
There's also the fact that, at least in Hometown, most of the older generations seem to be, or were, in straight-passing — and same-species — relationships (Toriel/Asgore, the Holidays, Catti's parents, Gerson/Ms. Boom, & Snowdrake's parents); it's mostly the younger generations that are depicted as queer and/or more open to inter-species relationships (Kris, Noelle, Susie, Berdly, the royal guards, Alphys, Undyne, Monster Kid [who is nonbinary], nice cream guy/Blue Ears, and quite possibly Catti & Pizzapants; basically just the majority of the younger characters lmao), sort of similar to how in our world, younger generations are generally more open-minded due to evolving social norms and less people having strict religious views. (It does seem like it may be a bit more common for the “older” characters to be queer and/or trans/gender-nonconforming in the Dark World — Spamton, Tenna, Rouxls, the Weather Duo, Seam, possibly the Mikes & Jevil, even Starwalker, and there's lots of other Darkners who use they/them or it/its — but, just like with monsters & humans, I wouldn’t necessarily say this means none of them are influenced at all by certain Lightner biases, especially Tenna, who, as I said, is influenced a lot by Toriel and his own censors & parental controls.)
There's other things that certainly imply gender roles, sexism, cissexism and heteronormativity exist in some capacity, such as (although this one isn’t specifically from Deltarune, I think it may still have implications for their world) the trans lioness that Mettaton gives his dress to being apprehensive to even attempt to wear one at first before being given the courage to try, and Spamton at least being implied to be resistant to wearing a dress, although in his case, it’s because he’s transmasculine; this means that there are definitely norms around which genders wear certain types of clothes. Spamton & King also use seemingly derogatory misogynistic terms (“hochi mama” and “wench”), and Berdly definitely holds some (mostly unintentional) misogynistic views. There's even Burgerpants/Pizzapants seeming to be insecure in his sexuality, constantly bringing up his attraction specifically to women (in a bit of a misogynistic way) despite the fact he seems a bit obsessed with Asriel and is now catching feelings for a guy over text.
So I certainly think it’s very plausible that queerphobia is still an actual thing in Deltarune’s world, and that this may be influenced by other religions like Christianity.
I mean, I don't think Spamton calling Noelle “Hochi Mama” is really that great of an evidence for Spamton having misogynistic views as every example of it is done in text brackets and he doesn't seem to have much control over them, at least to some extent. In fact, they seem to read much more like tics and tics can cause people to say words they don't actually mean.
But I do also want to bring out a “fun fact” I found out during some research. There was one point in history where ECT (Shock Therapy) was used in an attempt to “cure” homosexuality and electric shocks are common practice used in conversion therapy.

Soft Spamton warms my heart. Imagine him shoving the photos of his family in everyone's faces Post-Reunion. He'd probably try to sell them for an impossible price because they are priceless to him.
Hear me out, intersex Pipis Daughter? Born a female despite the Addisons being assigned with no gender. All the Pipis seemingly just clones of Spamton and yet this one has her own identity? Being born differently from any other Darkner, Lightners not having a hand in her creation, and treated differently because of it?
