yeah it gets a bit buried in other stuff when looking it up, but essentially in the 90s he funded three separate ME/CFS research centers as the director of the national institute of allergy and infectious diseases (NIAID). but by the early 2000s, he said ME/CFS ‘didnt fit’ NIAID (despite yknow. being an infectious disease) and shut all of them down. he also was surprised to get backlash from saying ME/CFS was psychological. it seems he’s backtracked a bit by now but the damage has unfortunately been done. he only retracted the psychological origin idea in 2021.
