A sultry sort of smile settles on Ellieâs lips. Oh, thatâs much better. She wants to be smug â honestly, she deserves it, look what sheâs brought out in the other woman, itâs magnificent! â but the little touch, he words, the cadence in Evieâs voice it all work together to send her heart aflutter and suddenly sheâs much too distracted to be smug. (Donât worry, sheâll get back to it later.)Â
âThatâs better,â she hums, sitting a bit taller now as she takes a sip of her coffee â her mouth isnât dry, but she appreciates the dramatic effect. âAtta girl!â she nudges Evieâs hand with her own. âSaid you werenât hopeless, didnât I?â
The second Ellie speaks, whatever kind of trance Evie was in stopped. Suddenly she realized just how forward that sounded, a blush working its way up her neck. âI mean, I guess so? Iâm not quite sure if that helped with the whole having to do that to another person in reality one day but uh.. Thank you. I think.â She rubs the back of her neck awkwardly, not wanting to meet Ellieâs gaze.Â
siofraranfordâ:
âI thought the same thing,â Siofra said with a shrug. Then again when she had first moved to LA she hadnât been looking for anything but to disappear. âLife can surprise you though.â
âI can only hope that youâre right about that. I would kill for a surprise right about now.â She looked up at the ceiling for a moment, as if trying to taunt the universe into submitting to the idea.Â

âDonât even worry about it,â CJ soothes, taking a sip of her own tequila. âAlready forgotten. One time I called a girl Jamie in bed, and it turned out her name was Amy.â
Serving up the drink, CJ makes sure itâs got an extra punch of alcohol. âPeople donât ask for cranberry vodkas unless somethingâs really bugging them. Whatâs up? Youâve got full bartender confidentiality right now.âÂ
Taking a sip of her own, she remarks, âLifeâs funny, Eves. Never a dull moment in Los Angeles.â
âI have an Aunt named Jamie. Sheâs a rather small woman. Not even.. Uh... Americans have--Hold on.â Evie did the maths quickly in her head before answering. â5 feet tall, yes. Sorry.â Evie quickly takes the drink and takes a big swig, eyes nearly bulging at the alcohol content. âOh thatâs--thatâs quite good. Very... Strong.â Clearing her throat, she puts the glass down onto a napkin and sighs.Â
âNothing too much is going on, if Iâm being honest. Iâm just worried about schooling and whether or not Iâll be able to find a job here in California. I donât know what Iâll do if I canât.â She didnât want to admit that last part out loud but... Bartender confidentiality.

I would like to thank my huge bottle of wine for keeping me sane. And maybe my dogsâŚ

Siofraâs eyes dipped to the table when the young woman spoke about her parents like that. She knew how hard it could be and gave a small nod. âI know I canât presume to know every part of the situation, but one day youâll make your own family. Whether thatâs friends or a partner, and it eases the hurt a little.â
Evie swallowed thickly, not really good with being vulnerable around people sheâd only just met. Or anyone, really. Maybe that was part of her rigid âdonât cry unless youâre dyingâ upbringing. âSomething tells me my likelihood of finding a partner is slim to none. I frankly can barely talk to a woman without stammering or going red in the face. Itâs a nightmare.â
alfalfachangâ:
If everyone reacted that way to her remembering their name, maybe Alfie would actually make a point to try more. âIâll be honest, usually Iâm awful with names but apparently the secret is to make a connection to something nerdy,â she beamed, glad she hadnât accidentally offended the Brit in some way.Â
Most of Alfieâs family tended to make fun of what they called her âwhite knight complexâ. Whether it was free repairs for her friends or going out of her way to help a stranger in need, Alfie could sometimes be overly helpful. They claimed it would one day bankrupt them, but they were forgetting that the OG white knight was their dad. Heâd raised her that way and she wasnât about to change anytime soon.
She honestly wasnât expecting anything in return, so the offer of dinner caught Alfie off guard. âI uhhhâŚyou really donât have to. I mean I wasnât about to let a pretty lady get stuck on the side of the road.â Yes sheâd called Evie pretty, but Evie had called her cute first. âBut out of curiosity, how often do cute girls fix your loose connections?â
She waited patiently for the girl to respond, watching her with slight anticipation. Maybe the girl was contemplating on how to let her down easy. Evie started to steel herself for the rejection when Alfie spoke, raising an eyebrow at her. Wait, was that her saying no or was that her saying yes? Double wait, had she just been called pretty? Evieâs smile was soft as she looked down for a moment before shaking her head. âNo, I really do.â
Tucking a stray hair behind her own ear, Evie took another small step forward so the distance wasnât too far apart but enough to maintain a healthy boundary. âLet me take you to dinner. Iâll feel awful if I donât. And something tells me youâd rather not have me feeling awful.â

GOD. this âŚwas the definition of a depressing song. how self induced this feeling was suddenly becoming. lifting the pen from the notebook, her other hand busied with her phone. sheâd quickly need to change the song. turn the tables to something a little more⌠uplifting. as rory opted for tame impala, a voice sounded near. direct. the familiarity clicked as her eyes met with the friendly face in front of her. the table becoming a party of two.Â
a compliment. it warmed her just about as much as her latte had. â thanks. â it was a short, but spoken sweetly. rory wasnât often a girl with many spoken words. most of them floated about inside of her head instead. it seemed appropriate to pause her song. â rory. â should she ask the other to sit ? it would only be polite, right ?  â y-yeah.. thought iâd save you from a dull lecture. â philosophy. mr. haynes managed to strip everything to a dull state. maybe it was the monotone voice⌠how could someone just be so⌠BLANK ? â its a painful two hours. â a grin managed to crack.  â would you like to sit ? âÂ
âLovely to meet you, Rory.â She nodded shyly, moving to sit down on the other side of the other girl. âThank you.â Taking a sip of her coffee, she looked around the area before her gaze pulled back to Rory. âI mean it couldnât have been too bad. Philosophy was a fun class for me to take ages ago when I had generals. What are you studying at UCLA?â
siofraranfordâ:
âOh god no, I go back now and then to see my girlfriendâs family but nothing long term.â Even going to see them was enough to make Siofra panicked and she spent a lot of time paranoid about who was around them.
âI definitely do not plan on going back if I can help it. My parents would have an absolute fit if they found out their one and only daughter wasnât... Straight.â She bit her lip, clutching the coffee cup a little bit too tightly.
alfalfachangâ:
The last person Alfie had been expecting was the cute english girl sheâd run into a couple of days ago. Suddenly she found herself wishing sheâd attempted to clean up a little more before coming out to greet her. âYup thatâs me. And youâre..EvaâŚEvie! I remember cause I was dumb and said it was like the PokemonâŚand I shouldnât have reminded you of thatâŚâ Alfie rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly and finally looked at the chequebook in Evieâs hand.
âLike I told you the other day, you really donât have to pay me back. You were having car trouble and I helped you out. Anyone would have done the same. Besides itâs not like I did much. You just had a loose connection between your battery terminals.â As Alfie rambled, her eyes caught the grease on Evieâs elbow and pants and she winced. Grease stains in clothes were not fun.Â
Cheeks immediately flushed, right eyebrow arching in surprise at the fact that Alfie remembered her name. âThank you for remembering my name! And thatâs completely fine. I wish I knew the Pokemon creatures better. Iâm being taught, donât worry.â Evie looked down at her boots for shaking her head. âNo no.. I canât just take the help for free. Iâd feel awful about that.â
Suddenly she was remembering Ellieâs lessons from a couple nights prior. Was this a perfect situation to use those âskillsâ she totally hadnât mastered? Probably not. But Alfie was cute and its not like she was going to force her to take her money. But maybe something else could be payment enough. A soft smile crossed over her face, Evie taking a step forward. âHow about I take you to dinner then? Itâs the least thing I can do to repay cute girls who fixed my, uh... Loose connections?â Dammit. So close.

Siofra laughed at that point, her parents had practically controlled every aspect of her life for quite some time. âQuite a while now actually, at least a decade.â
âA decade? Thatâs quite a bit of time to spend in the States. Do you ever think youâll want to go back home?â She knew her answer. And the answer was a resounding ânoâ.
alfalfachangâ:
There was always supposed to be two of them working at the auto shop, but somewhere between them opening the garage up and her replacing the wheels on the Cadillac that had been parked outside the shop since first thing that morning, her older brother Alvin had disappeared. Alfie knew this because sheâd attempted to do a repair on a â08 Civic but had had to be the one to answer the phone every time it had run because there was no sign of her brother anywhere.
Sliding back under the Civic, Alfie made it maybe 10 minutes before she heard the sound of footsteps in the shop. Sighing, she dropped her arms to her sides and placed her impact wrench back on the ground . âIâll be over in a second!â she called out, bracing her arms on the undercarriage of the car and swiftly pushed herself and the creeper out from under the car.
Grabbing a towel from the cart next to her, Alfie quickly wiped down her hands in an effort to at least look halfway presentable, even though there was definitely at least a little grease on her face, and rushed to the entrance of the shop.Â
âHey, sorry about the wait. What can I do for ya today?âÂ
Evie waited for the other girl to arrive, nose scrunching up adorably as she accidentally got her elbow in some grease that resided on the counter-top. Immediately moving off of it, she wiped it on her pants. Which was stupid because now there was grease on her pants. âChrist on a cracker.â She muttered under her breath just in time for the girl to walk up, to which she promptly pulled out a checkbook.Â
âHello! Yes, youâre Alfie right? I remember you said you worked here and I needed to repay you for the services you did on Coop so I thought I might as well just pop on by. Not that I didnât have other things to do. I do. I just also... Had to do... This.â Yup. She should stop talking. Immediately.

Ellie does her best to hold back a snort, and honestly? She thinks she deserves a humanitarian award for her effort, but that would be an issue for another time. If she wants to be the Mother Teresa of hopeless saphic ladies, sheâd had too prove sheâs had successes.Â
âStop,â she says sternly, moving a hand to catch Evieâs forehead before it collides with the table, only slightly regretting her decision when her knuckles crunch against the wood under itâs weight. âYouâre there, just try again.â A beat, âwith less words.â
The catching of her head brought back soft flashes of the night sheâd spent with Ellie. Soft skin, bare skin. Shaking her head she pulled away from the touch and sat upright, sparing a glance at her. Bollocks. Okay, she could do this. Less words... Less words? Brown eyes focused on the other womanâs gaze now, shoulders relaxing slightly as she took a deep breath to steel her nerves.Â
âEver since you sat down I havenât been able to catch my breath.â Her body moved as if on auto pilot, eyes drawing down to lips as she reached forward and softly let fingers trace across the other womanâs jaw. âI think itâs only fair we even the playing field.â This time her gaze flicked up to lock with Ellieâs, her gaze smoldering oddly enough.
siofraranfordâ:
âAh now the parents shadow I can understand,â Siofra had her own ideas for moving from the UK but her parents certainly had their hand in it. Even without her past having both her parents as doctors had been enough pressure. âThat would be lovely,â
âParents always seem to be far too... Preoccupied with your life when you donât want them to be.â Evie sighed before calling on a waitress, asking for a croissant and letting her know that sheâd be paying for the woman across from her. âSo, how long have you been in LA?â
lauralawordâ:
Lana considers the offer, while simultaneously enjoying the sound of Evieâs voice (Lana has a known weakness for European women, after all). Â
âYou could teach me something about forensic science.â The professor replies, genuinely interested in whatever Evie is about to tell her. To Lana, learning something new is the best kind of distraction. Especially a distraction from disappointment.
âSomething interesting... Hmmm...â Evie taps her chin with her fingers, thankfully reaching for the glass of wine that was brought to her. Taking a small sip, she perks up, clearly having thought of something. âDid you know that the first criminal fingerprint identification was made in 1892?â She took another sip, not quite sure if this was interesting enough. âHis name was Juan Vucetich. He was an Argentinian anthropologist. The forensic science behind it helped them to discover that a mother had killed her sons. Insane right?â

BREWPHORIA had been a common place for rory to spend her time at. living with an older sibling wasnât always the greatest. especially when the young student had been trying to focus⌠and her sister had several ⌠LOUD friends over⌠or worse⌠a BOY. it was entirely uncomfortable. ⌠making the blond want to retract into a shell, much like a hermit. however busy the cafe had grown, rory never minded - the atmosphere was filled with a lot of people such as her. all finding comfort in this space.
thirty minutes into her time at the cafe, and rory had wiped the froth from her messed latte art off of her upper lip, and had already ignored an essay she was supposed to be writing, because she was too busy doodling peonies. with one ear bud hanging down to her lap, the other was in her ear playing the WALLOWS. â uncomfortable. â repeat. it often helped her focus. ⌠but she wasnât doing much of that, considering not a single word of her essay had been written.Â
Grabbing what was her third cup of coffee that day, Evie turned around and scanned her favorite coffee shop. Her eyes land on a blonde in the corner, eyes narrowing and then widening in recognition. Sheâd accidentally gone to a class that sheâd been in. It wasnât until about halfway through that sheâd gotten up the confidence to ask someone what the class actually was.Â
Walking over, Evie gave a small wave, noticing the other girl was doodling something on a piece of paper. âYou draw lovely.â She started, wishing she wasnât so god awful awkward. âIâm Evie, by the way. Youâre the nice girl in the lecture hall that had to tell me I was definitely in the wrong class. I never got to say thank you! So, uhm, thank you!â
siofraranfordâ:
Siofra smiled at Evieâs reaction to where she was from. It was nice to meet people from the UK especially when she felt far away from home. âWell you seem to come across as quite sweet if you were looking for feedback,â Siofra said with a nod to the waitress sheâd seen Evie talking to. âOh Iâm here for my lunch thatâs all.â
âSweet and utterly hopeless. But its alright, Iâm not exactly in the States to meet the gal of my dreams. Iâm here for work and to make a name for myself far away from my father.â Evie blanched, immediately wanting to dig a hole. âThat was... Entirely too much to tell a person I just met.â Clearing her throat, she tried again. âI could go for a croissant. How about I buy? Itâs the least I can do for talking your ear off.â
