Ich hätte auch schreiben können ‚Feminismus und Schwachsinn‘, denn die Kritik, die im Namen der Wissenschaft am Feminismus verbrochen wird, hat oft mit Wissenschaft wenig zu tun. Jedoch meine angeborene Courtoisie gegenüber dem männlichen Geschlecht verbot mir, auf den Wegen des Herrn Möbius zu wandeln. Meiner Ansicht nach sind die Herren Gelehrten, insbesondre die Herren Naturwissenschaftler und die Herren Mediziner die ungeeignetsten Leute, sich kritisch mit dem Feminismus zu befassen. Sie stehen dem Weibe zu persönlich und zu materialistisch gegenüber und beurteilen es aus einer ganz schiefen und recht beschränkten Perspektive, jedenfalls von ganz unwissenschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten aus... Nein, Herr Möbius, das Weib ist nicht schwach, nicht inferior, nicht 'physiologisch schwachsinnig', aber das Weib ist krank – es leidet zu sehr unter der Herrschaft des männlichen Sexus.

just because I do fewer units than you does not necessarily mean I have more free time and energy and therefore should do more of the work

think about it this way: maybe I don’t have free time and energy which is WHY I only have two classes but I mean if you want to try and convert living with a chronic illness into contact hours then go ahead but I can tell you I’d pick the 6 hours of marketing and commerce any day

The problem I have is not with the duolingo itself, but rather the alarming number of people who believe that they can reach any kind of proficiency in their target language by only using duolingo. • It focuses on rote memorisation of vocabulary and simple sentence patterns. • It does not let the learner choose what topics and vocabulary they want to learn based on their interests or needs, rather making them shovel past useless lessons about animals and foods before finally teaching the word for “language”. • It relies almost entirely on translation, and does not allow the user to interact with the language naturally by using it for its original purpose - communication with others. …it is a great tool to help you learn the very basics, fill in little vocabulary holes, or revise what you’ve already learnt, however you simply can not expect it to make you “fluent” in a language, even in combination with other resources. The reality is: you can read all there is to know about riding a bike, but you will never be able to ride a bike if you don’t get on one at some point and start practising using the bike, even if you wobble or fall off; and you can read all there is to know about a language, but you will never be able to use it if you don’t begin using it at some point and start practising, even if you stutter or make “mistakes”. Successful language learners don’t just study the grammar of the language they’re learning (which they wouldn’t actually be able to do on duolingo anyway, as the extremely limited amount of grammar that is taught by the little green owl is often not clearly explained or reinforced); they get as much regular exposure to their target language as possible by watching videos, listening to music and the radio, reading books, newspapers and online articles, learning about things that interest them, and/or playing games, but most importantly interacting with other speakers as part of their normal life, even if they don’t live within close enough proximity to the country or area where the language is used. They don’t measure their progress or success on their daily duolingo XP, ability to complete a lesson without losing any hearts, or the electronically estimated “fluency” percentage, but on how their confidence grows as they use it more every day, the increasing amount of enjoyment they get out of being able to understand the language and express themselves better each time they get the opportunity to listen to a song or chat with a friend, and the feedback they get from other people who give constructive criticism, encouraging them to continue exploring the world through the language.

So tonight I joined my parents, and the neighbours, at the local pub quiz. We won, and won the bonus round, much to the annoyance of the other teams. Apparently my parents and their friends win every other week. Nerds. So to prank them the landlord had a special “Super Hard Pub Question” for us for double or nothing on our prize (vouchers for a gallon of beer) to let the rest of the pub feel better because we were “guaranteed to lose” since there was “no way we could know the answer.” I got picked to answer it because I’m the youngest and have less General Knowledge.

The question?

“What is the word for beer in Ancient Egyptian?”

Pub: *loud raucous laughter and cheering*

Landlord: *looks smug*

Me: Do you want that in English or in the original Hieroglyphs?

Landlord: The hieroglyphs of course!

Pub: *more laughter*

Me: *scribbles quickly in the 10 seconds I had to answer*

Landlord: Fuck. Me.

Pub: *utter silence broken only by someone at the back exclaiming WTF*

Landlord: How did you even know that?

Me: You picked the one person here who can read them?

Landlord: Oh shit it’s you isn’t it?

Dad yelling from the back: SURPRISEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

It’s safe to say we’re simultaneously fucking legends/not very popular at the local right now.

my fav linguistic trend is how younger ppl use “like” to signify paraphrasing and how older ppl dont get it. i’ll say something along the lines of “he was like, ‘fuck off!’” and any older person in the vicinity will be like “did he really say that??” no i was paraphrasing, hence the use of “like” instead of “said.” try to keep up, sandra
