Every time I think about season 5 of The Boys, I get more pissed.
It is solidly rewatchable (if you headcanon that Soldier Boy used Stormfront as an excuse when he really gave Homelander the V1 because he loved him), but with even a few additions, it could have been solidly good.
Like all you needed to do was
Establish the Homelander and Soldier Boy relationship, generational trauma (maybe with some Ryan in there), and use that to explain why he gave the V1
That Vought is to blame for Homelander being so messed up
More Ryan with both Homelander and Butcher
Parallels between Homelander + Ryan and Butcher + Ryan
Homelander being made the villan completely and Vought being totally controlled by him makes sense, but there needed to be more exploration of Homelander's childhood, why he was so caught up being "God," why his trauma makes him pause at saying that he is peoples father.
Butcher was on a great trajectory, but the showrunners were scared to show not tell how he is still super anti-supe for most of the season. Killing Neuman was him going totally dark, him embracing Kessler was sick. Make his plan of using the virus on all supes more prominent, and his overall brutality more clear... Like Dean Winchester, my man kept getting his development undone and then rushed at the end. Building up those parallels between him and Hughie and Ryan and Homelander would be really interesting in my opinion.
And why why why make Stormfront so important? Soldier Boy is an interesting character, and I would love to see his dynamic with Homelander be explored more as a motivating factor.
Even the biggest issues outside of that (like Kimiko getting the radiation power) could be addressed by having proper setup or like hints elsewhere....
And it wouldn't be hard. Most of these tweaks are script wise, and would not raise production costs. I don't even think I needed Homelander to go on a rampage or anything, because its more tragic if he is just a broken person who never gets to really take revenge on the corporation that made him that way, and had no lasting impact on the world.
The show felt like it had nothing to criticize because it got too self aware on the evil of corporations. The bleak ending is written like a fairy tale ending.
