Hogwarts House Study Moods
The Gryffindor: group quizzes and jeopardy and flashcards, interacts with material whenever possible so they make models for chem and draw out maps for history and act out Shakespeare, studies in some friend's room a bit too loud to actually be focusing, highlights bc it's the quickest, pomodoros involve longer time divisions, always in OH listening to others' questions, forgets to eat and then they all order pizza followed by a Taco Bell run in the wee hours of the morn when they're hungry again
The Hufflepuff: learns by teaching others, has to study in advance bc they know others are going to ask for help during exam weeks, secretly procrastinates by planning for everything in their bujos, washi tape tabs, fruity non-caf teas and herbal teas to relax or sleep or to settle nerves, has gel pens in every possible color, draws the neatest diagrams, can't prioritize so studies everything, uses that essential oil trick to remember things better by smell association, focuses best with dubstep
The Ravenclaw: notes, notes, and notes, mind maps to connect ideas no matter how unrelated they seem, solo studying in their rooms, green tea, classical music in the background, gets led off track focusing on details that have never been mentioned in class, will die for graph paper, accidentally pulls all-nighters bc they're so obsessed with understanding every single thing inside and out, color codes with basic colors nothing fancy, eats a bunch of toast and cereal bc they don't want to waste time
The Slytherin: practices old tests and gets extra material from others who have taken the class, motivated by watching others study so they're always at the library during finals or at dark and quiet cafes, the night owl-iest of the bunch, iced cold brews no matter the weather, makes comprehensive study guides that cover all testable points, does nothing all term but kicks into high gear a week and a half before any exam, owns a billion black pens and has an opinion about each of them, listens to indie alt

17/12/16 7:08 PM // brainstorming title ideas, thought Iād share it with you guys š
french vocab from the first half of my year abroad
Iām home for Christmas now, which means Iām back on Scottish soil with decent internet. Itās giving me a chance to reflect on my French and how much it has improved just in three months of living in France. So I thought Iād share some of the things that I learned from living in the Charente-Maritime:Ā
ah, bah, oui (expression) this seems to be the equivalent ofĀ āyeah but noā when people have a false-start on a sentence. usually, i heard this in disagreements in my classroom when students were wanting to correct another student but couldnāt get the words out fast enough. i think itās a hilarious thing to say and iāve been trying to incorporate it into my way of speaking.Ā
en fait (expression) this literally means āin factā orĀ āactuallyā, which i think can come off a little rude in english but is actually a common expression in french. french people i have encountered useĀ āen faitā to start sentences, to provide more information, to correct, basically just all the time!Ā
franchement (adverb) in english, iām a big fan of usingĀ ātbhā orĀ āto be honestā, and this is the best french equivalent to that. it sounds so very french when itās said and can meanĀ āfranklyā,Ā āhonestlyā,Ā āindisputablyā orĀ āwithout hesitationā, depending on the context.Ā
rater (verb) i picked up this new verb when i was telling a class about how i failed my driving test. i knew thatĀ āraterā can meanĀ āto missā, as inĀ āi missed the trainā, but one student turned to another and said thatĀ āelle a ratĆ©ā and it was explained to me thatĀ āraterā can also meanĀ āto failā, or in my caseĀ āto mess upā something.Ā
se tromper (verb) this verb meansĀ āto be mistakenā, and i definitely found myself sayingĀ āje me suis trompĆ©eā a lot while I was just new to the country!Ā
une chocolatine (noun) I was living on the south-west coast of France in the Charente-Maritime region which means that I picked up some new and different ways of saying things. I was quickly informed by my students in the most sincere and serious way possible that the famousĀ āpain au chocolatā pastry does not exist in the Charente-Maritime and I was to ask forĀ āune chocolatineā at the local boulangerie instead. I now use both nouns interchangeably!Ā

Parks and Rec Study Moods
The Leslie: highlighting, binders full of color coded tabs, ends all-nighters by going out for waffles, Hamilton playing in the background, makes Quizlets and the Google Doc study guide for a class and sends them out to everyone... 2 weeks early, always studying in advance
The Ann: studying with classmates at starbs, starts a group chat so everyone can help each other, talks friends who are freaking out to calm down, somewhat color coded review sheets, washi decorating everything, uses all the study research-based tips like writing in blue pen to remember things
The Ron: doesn't study bc it goes against the system and screw the system, (when he does it's outside amongst nature, alone, leaves his phone at home, only uses a stack of paper and a black pen, textbook, bonus if there's breakfast food as a snack)
The Tom: lives by Treat Yo Self⢠down to M&M's for every paragraph read, pop music blaring over headphones, sits in the library and is always part of "that loud table", works best in groups bc always gets distracted by social media when alone
The Donna: takes breaks between problems to do her nails one nail at a time, has a ton of colorful gel pens, has fancy headers on all her notes, always puts her v alive social life on hold during exams, sometimes studies in her car (a.k.a. her fav space), listens to classical/opera
The April: studying at work, has a tab open for whatever she's being paid for but the rest is all school stuff, takes notes on post its and adds it all on her textbook, listens to dark wave, usually works alone at the library or dark hipster cafe, always with coffee as black as her soul
The Andy: energy drinks, tries to get organized the night before the test but fails miserably and ends up just reviewing what he has, that works fine for him, studies right until the test is on his desk, listens to alt rock, sugary snacks and junk food all day, naps a ton
The Mark: turns on Do Not Disturb so people won't bother him, sighs constantly, makes mind maps, uses the Pomodoro method but checks for break time /far/ too often, given up on his GPA but still tries on the dl, eats chips, goes MIA right after a test to avoid talking to others about it
The Chris: records lectures and listens to them while doing cardio, makes fruit-based study snacks like acaĆ bowls and smoothies, teaches himself by tutoring others, lives in athleisure, makes lists for everything, uses flashcards to test himself and others
The Ben: makes up little stories to remember details, uses mnemonics too, always in the library, bothers all the TAs by arguing over lost points, sometimes loses track of time while watching gamers on Twitch, seems organized but check his planner bc it is A Messā¢
The Garry/Jerry/Larry/Terry: makes silly mistakes, goes to all available review sessions and extra office hours, puts in a lot of effort in everything, makes very visual notes, does what is necessary and then takes time off to recharge, often forgetful, works best surrounded by positivity
gel or ballpoint? lined/grid/blank? bujo/planner or digital calendar? get up early or stay up late to work on something?
