I think the reaction to Naruto's behavior in the kage arc is interesting in the sense that it's naturally considered masochistic, often with the added explanation that it makes no sense for him to act that way over a guy who seemingly has only hurt him in recent memory, but the same words aren't really applied to his behavior in the Pain arc, where he repeatedly puts his life on the line to defend the village that historically has abused and neglected him for their approval. Something about the masculinity of heroism vs the emasculation of getting on your knees to beg for the life of the man you love, the honor of dying for the state vs the imprudent decision of dying for someone you care for. Kage arc naruto behaves against any sort of honorable code established thus far. He went against friends, colleagues, authorities, he turned the other cheek to someone from another village over a criminal. I really do think its like. The way he spits on the will of fire, the idea you should value the village's prosperity over anything, over a friend, over a brother.
