the rain was drumming a steady, rhythmic beat against the panoramic glass windows of martinās high-rise apartment, completely blurring the glowing neon lights of the city below. inside, the world was small, quiet, and entirely insulated from the rest of the universe. the only illumination came from the warm, amber glow of the kitchen counter lights and the flickering television screen in the living room, which had been playing a movie neither of you were actually paying attention to.
you were completely buried under a heavy, oversized fleece blanket on the plush L-shaped sofa, your legs draped comfortably across martinās lap.
martin was sitting back against the cushions, his head tilted back against the fabric. the usual chaotic, hyperactive energy that he carried on stage, through the media, and around the rest of the cortis members was completely dialed down tonight. around you, he always softened into something incredibly warm, gentle, and entirely yours. his long, slender fingers were tracing lazy, mesmerizing circles over your ankle beneath the thick fabric of the blanket, his touch feather-light but deeply grounding.
every few seconds, his thumb would catch the edge of your sock, tugging at it absentmindedly before resuming the rhythmic, soothing strokes against your skin.
"you're staring," you murmured, shifting slightly and looking up from your phone screen. the glow of your device lit up your face, but your eyes immediately found his.
a slow, unfiltered grin spread across martin's faceāthe exact same grin that usually preceded some chaotic antic on a variety show, but tonight, it was entirely softened by pure affection. he didn't even try to deny it. instead, he leaned forward, sliding his hands completely under your knees to effortlessly pull you across the sofa until you were sitting right between his thighs, your back pressed firmly against his chest.
"i'm allowed to look at my girlfriend," he whispered right against your ear, his voice low, raspy, and vibrating with a soft chuckle.
he wrapped his long arms securely around your waist, pulling you flush against his chest. he buried his face directly into the crook of your neck, inhaling deeply. the clean, familiar scent of his expensive cologne mingled with the cozy scent of his apartment, and before you could even speak, he began leaving a slow trail of soft, lingering kisses right along your jawline.
you shifted, a quiet gasp escaping your lips as his lips brushed against a sensitive spot right under your ear. you tilted your head instinctively, giving him more access, your hands coming up to rest over his forearms. you could feel the hard muscle beneath his long-sleeved shirt, the steady, rhythmic thumping of his heart against your shoulder blades.
"martin, stop, it tickles," you laughed, though you didn't pull away. instead, you leaned back further into him, letting him completely anchor you to the couch.
"never," he mumbled against your skin, planting one last, loud, dramatic kiss right on your cheek before finally resting his chin on your shoulder. his hands slid down to interlock his fingers with yours, squeezing gently. his long fingers fit perfectly between your own. "i was just thinking about how crazy it is that you're actually sitting here. in my living room. wearing my clothes."
you glanced down at the oversized light-blue fabric swallowing your frame. it was a heavy, worn-out hoodie with slightly frayed cuffsāthe exact hoodie he had been wearing months ago. the one from the festival.
"are we getting nostalgic tonight, mr. leader?" you teased, twisting your wrist so you could stroke the back of his hand with your thumb.
martin caught your lips in a quick, sweet side-profile kiss, his mouth lingering for a second before he pulled back just enough to look at your profile. "always. james brought it up today at practice, you know. we were reviewing some old stage footage from that exact festival set, and he literally stopped the video, looked at me in front of the choreographers, and asked if i was going to randomly sprint out of the building to chase a delivery truck."
you let out a loud laugh, the image of james scolding martin vivid in your mind. "of course he did. james is never going to let you live that down, is he?"
"never," martin groaned, burying his face back into your shoulder with a dramatic sigh. "how are the rest of the boys? juhoon told james to leave me alone, but he was smirking the entire time over his water bottle, so heās not innocent. and keonho... god, keonho is an absolute menace, y/n. the second james mentioned the festival, keonho dropped to his knees on the practice room mirror floor and started reenacting the whole sidewalk scene."
you turned your head to look at him, your eyes sparkling. "no way. did he really?"
"yes!" martin animatedly exclaimed, his hyperactive side bubbling to the surface for a moment. he lifted his head, his hands gesturing wildly. "he clasped his hands together, looked up at the ceiling lights like he was praying, and yelled, 'oh, y/n, you are so beautiful, please give me your numbers before my manager kills me!' and then seonghyeon joined in, obviously. because seonghyeon can never pass up an opportunity to act dramatic. he played your part, acting all starstruck, gasping, and literally fainting backward into keonhoās arms. they are absolute idiots. i suffer every single day as their leader."
"hey, to be fair, seonghyeonās acting wasn't entirely wrong," you smiled, twisting around completely in his arms so you were now facing him, straddling his lap.
the blanket fell away slightly, leaving you exposed to the cool air of the room, but the heat radiating from martinās body was more than enough to keep you warm. you reached up, your fingers gently tangling into the messy, soft layers of his hair, pushing a few stray strands away from his forehead. "i was completely starstruck. my brain went entirely dark, martin. you came out of nowhere like a total hurricane. one second i'm checking my phone under a streetlamp, and the next second, the main vocalist of my favorite band is standing in my personal space looking like a fugitive."
martinās hands instantly settled on your hips, his grip firm, possessive, and warm, pulling you even closer until there was absolutely no space left between your bodies. his gaze dropped to your lips, his thumbs rubbing soothing circles through the fabric of your clothes.
"i was terrified," he admitted softly. the playful, unserious demeanor completely melted away for a fraction of a second, leaving behind the raw, genuine boy who had fallen in love at first sight under the glaring festival lights. "when i was on that stage, looking out at the barricade during our second song... the white noise in my head was so loud. there were thousands of people screaming, pyrotechnics going off, james yelling cues into my in-ear monitor because i missed a formation step. but then i saw you. you were just smiling, singing along to 'wassup', looking so effortlessly beautiful under the blue and pink lights. my chest literally ached, y/n. i spent the rest of the hour-long set just yearning for a girl whose name i didn't even know."
you felt a familiar, intense flutter in your stomach, the exact same sensation youād felt when his shadow had blocked out the light months ago. "and then you decided to risk your entire career and your manager's sanity by jumping out of a moving van."
"it was practically stationary!" martin defended himself, his eyes lighting up as his usual hyper energy bounced right back. he pouted, his lower lip sticking out slightly in that stubborn way you had come to adore. "the traffic gridlock outside the venue was horrendous. we hadn't moved in ten minutes. but seriously... when i looked out that tinted window and saw you standing under that specific streetlamp, looking at your phone... my brain just went 'now or never.' i knew if that van moved another ten feet, the crowd would swallow you up, and iād lose you forever. i didn't think about dispatch, i didn't think about rumors, i didn't think about the lecture. i just popped the door and ran."
"and you ran fast," you murmured, leaning in close, your breaths mingling in the quiet space between you. "you were breathing so hard. you looked like a panicked puppy trying to ask for directions."
"hey! thatās juhoonās line! don't quote him to me!" martin gasped, but the hyper protest was instantly cut short when you leaned down and pressed your lips firmly against his.
martin melted instantly. it was always like thisāthe second your lips touched his, all his loud, chaotic thoughts completely silenced. his hands slid up from your hips, trailing up your ribs before his long fingers gently cupped your face, cradling your jawline with an incredible amount of gentleness.
the kiss deepened naturally, turning slow, deep, and heavy with months of built-up affection. martinās lips moved against yours with a sweet, aching familiarity. he tasted like the quiet rainy evening, warm and comforting. he let out a soft, contented sigh into your mouth, his thumbs gently caressing your cheekbones as he tilted his head to take the kiss deeper, his tongue lightly brushing against yours in a way that made your fingers tighten in his hair.
you pulled him closer, your chest pressing against his, feeling the frantic, rapid thumping of his heart. even after months of dating, you still had this exact effect on him. he was the confident, energetic leader on stage, but in his living room, under your touch, he was entirely breathless.
when he finally pulled back, just a fraction of an inch, his eyes remained closed for a few seconds. his forehead rested against yours, his nose brushing yours as you both caught your breath in the quiet room.
"you still haven't apologized for the head kiss, by the way," you whispered, a teasing smile playing on your lips as your fingers smoothed down the back of his neck, playing with the soft hairs at his nape.
martin opened his eyes, his dark irises blown out and intense, before a dramatic, whiny pout instantly formed back on his face. "i told you! i panicked! the manager was slamming his hand on the horn, seonghyeon was screaming out the open window for me to get my ass back in the car before someone took a photo, and i just... i wanted to be smooth, y/n! i wanted to leave an impression! my body just reacted. i wanted to pull you close, and the top of your head was right there!"
"it wasn't very smooth, leader," you giggled, leaning forward to press a soft kiss onto his pouting lower lip, then another one on his cheek, and one more on the tip of his nose. "you kissed my hair and then sprinted away like you stole something."
"it worked though," he pointed out triumphantly, his hyperactive confidence bouncing right back into place. his hands slid down to your waist, lifting you slightly so he could shift your weight, wrapping his arms securely around your shoulders and tucking your head right under his chin, pulling you into the exact same physical position he had held you in on that chaotic night. "and now, i get to do it properly. without a manager honking at me, and without a countdown."
he leaned his head down, his lips pressing a soft, lingering, incredibly firm kiss right against the top of your head, exactly where he had months ago under the damp city air. but this time, he didn't let go. he kept his lips pressed there for a long, quiet moment, his hands smoothing down the back of your hoodie, holding you close against his heart.
"i'm not running back to any van tonight," martin murmured against your hair, his grip tightening protectively around you. "i'm staying right here. with you."
you smiled, wrapping your arms securely around his neck, burying your face into his neck as the rain continued to fall outside, completely safe in the quiet world you two had built out of a single moment of festival chaos.
as you rested against him, the comfortable silence was suddenly shattered by the sharp, successive buzzing of martin's phone on the coffee table. the screen lit up repeatedly, casting bright white flashes against the dark wood.
martin groaned loudly, the sound vibrating against your chest. "ignore it. if it's james telling me we have an early vocal lesson tomorrow, i'm legally changing my name and moving to a different country."
"it might be important," you chuckled, nudging him slightly.
with a dramatic sigh that involved him rolling his entire body back onto the cushions, martin reached out with one long arm, snagging the phone off the table without untangling himself from you. he held the screen above your faces so you could both see it.
it was the cortis group chat, and it was absolutely popping off.
james [08:32 PM]: has anyone checked on our leader? he left practice early because he said he had a 'very important cultural meeting.'
seonghyeon [08:33 PM]: by cultural meeting, he means he's currently being suffocated by y/n's love. i saw him buying those expensive strawberries on the way out.
keonho [08:33 PM]: [image attached]
keonho had sent a blurry, highly dramatic selfie of himself holding a stuffed bear, kissing its head with his eyes squeezed shut, mimicking martin's infamous festival exit.
keonho [08:34 PM]: āi gotta go, y/n! the van is calling me! my heart is yearning!ā lmao someone stop him.
juhoon [08:34 PM]: leave him alone, he's fragile when he's in love. he cried during a rom-com last week.
martinās jaw dropped, his thumbs instantly flying across the keyboard with hyperactive speed, his face turning a hilarious shade of pink.
martin [08:35 PM]: I DID NOT CRY JUHOON IT WAS AN EYE ALLERGY.
martin [08:35 PM]: and keonho i am selling cookie tonight while you sleep see if i dont.
you burst out laughing, pressing your forehead against his shoulder as your body shook with mirth. "an eye allergy, martin? really?"
"it was a very moving scene, y/n!" martin turned to you, his eyes wide and defensive, though the giant smile on his face gave him away completely. "the main characters got separated at an airport! do you know how triggering that is for someone who almost lost the love of his life in a festival traffic jam?!"
"you are so dramatic," you wheezed, reaching up to pinch his cheek.
martin dropped the phone back onto the couch, completely abandoning the chat to focus all his attention back on you. his expression shifted instantly from defensive leader to a boy completely captivated. he caught both of your hands in his, pinning them gently against his chest, his eyes dropping to your mouth again.
"i am dramatic," he agreed, his voice dropping an octave, losing its frantic edge. "but only about you. you have no idea what you did to me that night, y/n. when i got back into that van, the guys thought i had a panic attack because my heart was beating so fast. i was just looking at your number on my screen, praying i didn't typo a digit because i was shaking so much."
"i was shaking too," you admitted softly, your voice growing quiet as the nostalgia settled deep in the room. "i sat on my bed for two hours just staring at my phone. when your text finally came through, i think my heart stopped. i thought my friends were playing a prank on me."
martin leaned forward, his lips brushing against yours as he spoke. "never a prank. i was so loud about you to the managers that they had to give me a lecture about idol dating rules before i even sent the first text. i told them i didn't care. i told them i'd pay whatever fine they wanted, as long as i got to take you out for food."
"you really are unhinged," you whispered against his mouth.
"completely," martin murmured, and then he kissed you again.
this time, it wasn't just a sweet, nostalgic kiss. it was deep, possessive, and lingering, his hands sliding up to tangle into your hair, holding you perfectly still as he poured every ounce of his hyper, intense, all-consuming love into the movement of his lips against yours. the rain continued to pour outside, but inside, under the warmth of the blanket and the weight of his touch, you knew you were exactly where you were supposed to be.
